I don't think I'd refer to the monitor's turret as "state of the art" anymore. I use to believe the union navy developed the first turrets ever used too but I hadn't really investigated what was going on with some of the European navies at that time. Union monitor design was "unique" to be sure but using the term "state of the art," implies very good or best contemporaneous design. The monitor's turret was suspended on one central shaft that raised the entire turret when revolving it and then needed to lower the entire turret when firing the cannon. There was minimal support under the turret walls so a direct hit on the turret ring could dent the wall bad enough to impede any movement. England and France had developed turrets that rested on top of ball bearings and used internal gearing to power turret revolution. During the civil war, the north might have developed the largest "brown water" navy on earth temporarily, but most broke down or became obsolete a few years after the war. The union only had around fifty ships capable of extended sea crossings. Although US naval action in Europe was unrealistic, the extent of port fortifications and coastal gun boat in both north and south made the eastern seaboard impervious to a European naval attack for the first time in history. The English became somewhat concerned when they realized their navy could no longer dictate English trade conditions with the US.

Well, the Monitor was only built because it was what they could build in the time they had. Monitor was basically an after-thought as something that would be completed much faster than the USS New Ironsides, which was a much better ship; but, cost 3x as much and wouldn’t be finished until several months after the battle of Hampton Roads.

Try building your Virginia with 6" armor on the belt and casemate. Or better yet 8" armor on a shorter casemate. Armed with either 7" tripple banded Brooke rifes, 11" double banded Brooke rifles or, better yet 11" Krupp double banded breech loaders; a pair fore and aft and 4 per broadside. And replace that underpowered "Merrimac" engine with a 4000 ihp double expansion Kirk company engine

I think one thing this game should capitalize on is how sometimes through history battles between warships would take hours, I like how they show it takes a while to kill a huge ship but the time limit seems a bit short, well done though

The most tragic and thankfully avoided part of using these new ships was that the war never saw them growing better and more dangerous or we could have seen small scale versions of Jutland 50 years before that one.

In the real battle, the engineer who designed the Monitor’s twin guns said to use a certain powder charge for battle; however, in the actual battle with the Virginia the crews only used 1/4 the manufacturer’s stated powder load because the captain thought only half the load alone would make the guns explode, which led to the stalemate of the cannon balls bouncing off the angled deck of the Virginia. We now know if the crew had used the correct powder load (as the manufacturer demonstrated after the battle) the cannon balls would’ve punched through the armor rather than deflect, and the manufacturer showed with a demonstration that the guns could hold together even with twice their designed powder load in the gun. Fear and ignoring the manufacturer led to a stalemate that should have been a swift victory.
@astrotrek3534 Жыл бұрын
Dahlgren guns had an unfortunate and incredibly publicized accident in the 1840s, which killed multiple government officials and almost a president. Made people distrust the guns, even though every gun was proofed (fired with 3 times the powder load) before seeing service.
@panzerabwerkanone Жыл бұрын
@@astrotrek3534 Wrong, the gun that exploded on the USS Princton was NOT a Dahlgren gun. The gun was in fact a gun designed by Captain Stockton to copy the John Ericcson's hoop band breech construction. It was the gun that failed and somehow Ericsson got some of the blame even though it wasn't the gun he had built. The Dahlgren guns at the battle of Hampton Rhoades were using the standard load used throughout the Navy AT THAT TIME. The myth that the guns were only half loads comes from testing done later in the war when engineers realized just how strong the Dahlgren guns were. By the end of the war the charges that were permitted were double what was standard at the time of the first ironclad battle. Also, an incident happened aboard the Monitor were one of the guns ran into the back of the turret. This was from hasty and improper training of the gun crew were the friction recoil system that Ericsson designed was loosened instead of tightened. The result were dents in the inside of the turret that lead historians to speculate that the captain had ordered the charges to be reduced.
@astrotrek3534 Жыл бұрын
@@panzerabwerkanone Oh, I don't know how I got that confused. Maybe because Ericsson was involved in both the failed gun and the design of Monitor. Still though, fears of exploding guns kept powder charges low throughout the war, like you mentioned the guns were capable of much stronger powder loads then were permitted.

You tube was kind enough to toss this in my lap randomly probably because I watch Wolfpack's other videos and may have commented once or twice on them. I have had this on the game wish listed for awhile, but the negative comments keep me from taking the plunge on it. While interesting on the surface, there is a lot wrong with the depiction of the casemate iron clad. My friends and I played a lot of Ironclads and the expansion back in the day (board game) and it was probably the best game that depicted that era of naval warfare. The detail was amazing and the rules pretty much covered everything relatively realistically including stuff like ramming and also fires. I am also somewhat of a history nut and especially naval history. One of the biggest things right off the bat is the depiction of the fore and aft cannon. Yes, there are 3 cannon ports there, but it is one cannon that uses all three. There simply isn't room inside for 3 cannons and the barrels look more like later guns both in appearance and length. When a cannon was run out on the Virginia, there was some barrel out there, but not like what is depicted. The Virginia actually had part of a barrel of one cannon shot away in its battle with the Monitor. There are other issues I could write about as well. All good stuff I suppose, but you would hope it would be a bit more true to realism than it is. Enjoy your work Wolfpack. Thanks.

I know do a 3 point turn that might cut the turn radius down to more manageable size LOL. That twin turret one sort of reminded me of the ill fated USS Keokuk that was shelled so badly out side of Charleston that it limped out and later sunk when the Union tried to force their way in and take the city by a naval assault on April 7th 1863.

Nice game-but I'd prefer that you put this Ironclad one on the back burner for now (excuse the pun!) And do Age of Sail first. Purely because Age of Sail is far closer to full completion with Campaign available, and Dreadnought isn't. (P.S. I'll be getting the Dreadnaught game, provided it's possible to set up completely historical ships for both the player and the opposing AI. I have little interest in what if designs. (Disappointed by 12" gun USS Monitor's quick victory over the CSS Virginia...)
