29:39: Torpedo belts *can* prevent flash fires. When you get hit by a torpedo, it calculates an effective penetration value proportional to the damage the torpedo dealt after torpedo damage reduction. If that penetration is greater than your effective turret armor thickness, then the game rolls for a flash fire. On the other hand, if the penetration is less than the effective armor thickness, there is *zero* chance of flash fire. So the combination of torpedo damage reduction + turret armor will make you immune to flash fires from torpedoes below a certain threshold of damage. Turret armor > penetration also works against flash fires from shell hits. This is why I always put at least 30" turret armor on late-game BBs.

@evil4zerggin9723 жыл бұрын
@@derrickubay-ubay9503 What can I say, turret armor is overpowered. If you have enough turret armor, you can run around with no barbette, no citadel, Super Heavy shells with extra ammo, electric traverse, Lyddite explosives, etc. and still have zero chance of getting flash fired because the turret armor blocks the flash fire roll from happening in the first place. Meanwhile you can do everything else to reduce flash fire chance, but if you don't have enough turret armor you can still get that unlucky flash fire roll.
@evil4zerggin9723 жыл бұрын
The devs dropped new news today about the next patch, including: "Torpedo Protection now contributes slightly to the Hull Resistance, making it useful not only against torpedoes." If the other stats stay the same, this will make torpedo belts yet more attractive. It's also likely the campaign will make keeping costs under control more of a factor than it is now, which could also help torpedo belts: they may be heavy, but they're relatively cheap.

Late but here's my definition: Any battleship larger than 80,000 tons displacement capable of surface combat, and shore bombardment with speeds in excess of 30 knots. Typically requires the ship to have proven in simulation to sink any one of 5 classes of battleship based on size relative to actual historical battleships, such as the South Dakota's, Iowa's, Yamato's, Bismarck's, King George V's. Some examples of super-battleships are the Montana's, and various H-type battleships.

That 1st match when you realized about Lyddie was just pure comedy gold lmao XD. And as for my ideal super battleship, then it should be hurling 18inch rounds (or go bigger, 'cause bigger is better) towards its opponents. Secondary wise I would had go for much more uniform setup if I were you, just to increase the amount of shells that can decimate light vessels at the same time. Main belt must be 16inch at minimum in order to bounce things, and speed is not really important. Anyway thanks for the great vid Stealth!

The Tillman battleship designs were monstrously large. Tillman Version IV-2 was presented with 15 18" guns in 5 triple turrets, 16 inch armor belt, 1000' long, 110' beam, a propulsion plant to drive it at 25+ knots and would have weighed in at 80,000 tons. These were designs demanded by Senator Tillman in WWI, where he wanted the Navy to request to build the "ultimate battleship" rather than the incremental modifications that went into the "standard" US battleship program.

If you want the "real" no-compromises US Super Battleship look at BB65-8 (BB65 scheme 8). 12 16-inch guns, with a 15.75" armour belt and the same 33-knot speed as the Iowa class. To achieve this the design had to be 320 metres long with 320,000 shp steam engines (more power than a modern nuclear-powered supercarrier). That's where the problem emerges; the cost not only of such massive ships but also the infrastructure needed to build and operate them.

if i were to design a US super battleship close to reality here are the changes i would have done to your ship 1: 18 inch guns 3x3 or 4x3 2: 34kts 3: 22" main belt, reduced belt extended by half (it uses all or nothing armor scheme on the modern ships so extended does not do much for the overall protection of the ship), main deck 10", conning tower 12", 20" main turret. 6" secondary 4: Super heavy shells. The US almost exlusivly used super heavy shells as they where superior for plunging fire to penetrate deck armor, but for the brawling purpous of your vessel, light shells would probably have been better, with flatter trajectory and better close in penetration 5: 5" secondaries galore, US loved their 5" multi purpos guns
@ulrichkalber90393 жыл бұрын
a super-something always is something that is better in most respects than any something that has come before. best example would be the dreadnought, in her time it was better than any battleship before her, making her a super-battleship of her time. the yamato was larger and better armed than any ship before her, in the game you can build 125k+ ton craft, if those are adequately armored and armed that would make them SBs of their time. if the game would be defining the bodys and guns for an ongoing battleship arms race we might have larger ships in later times, with larger guns and better aiming range etc. every generation would redefine what a SB would look like. in the old times the size of a first rate has slowly increased, always redefining what a first rate would be. any cathegory of ship would tend to grow over time. had the armsrace gone on we might have 40" guns on 1000 meter long ships, controlled by computers, firing intelligent(excalibur-) rounds that are rocket assisted to reach 150 Km of range, hitting a target in sub meter accuracy, possibly carrying 100 Megaton warheads. also such vessels might be nuclear driven to reach like 50 knots of speed. at least that would be the possibilities of technology. the limit is not technology, it is affordability.

In my point of view of how the USA doctrine was coming out of the WW2 is a supreme balance of all 3, minus speed when it had to apply, a modest secondary armament, strong main guns to punish those who thought that it was weak but not, and speed to control the fight as it pleased to keep the firepower going. I dont know how many will agree with this but looking from the North Carolina, South Dakota, Iowa, and Montana class BB they all are just about the same in firepower from main guns to secondary firepower and speed was increased quite a bit as well, so that is my thoughts on this matter.

I think you've nailed the American super battleship. American battleships should be able to be jacks of all trades by masters of none because they need to be equally able to handle fighting the doctrine of any and every other Navy, I don't need to be the best at it but if not true shear force of numbers it needs to be able to deal with it

"just a lot of guns" *laughs in tillman 4* (or whichever one it was that had sextuple turrets) also, to me a super battleship is just a battleship scaled up enough to the point there is no having to sacrifice one thing for another (speed for armor etc) a floating fortress with enough of everything to take on the world and win (this is, of course, completely impractical so I'll accept your interpretation as a comparatively sensible one)

A super BB? Well, let's see. A super BB seems to be meant to be able to (with screening) defeat all capital ships with armor defeating rounds at range. So 18 inch minimum. It should have very good accuracy, and a lot of big, devastating rounds, including the ammunition to back it up. Its armor needs to be able to defeat everything except super BB rounds at a specified range window (either long range, or short-mid range), keeping in mind that it may be possible to balance a build to some degree. It also needs to have a solid heavy cruiser strapped to each side of the ship, in terms of secondaries. It does not need to have sonar 3, unless its turning rate is so bad that it demands it, and a general rule of thumb is DDs and CLs shouldn't be let inside 12 km. Inside that range, angle away (but not so much the front guns can't fire at something) and retreat until it's well and truly dead. It also doesn't need to be particularly fast. 28 knots is fine. Engines should trend towards reliability, and the builder should try to minimize weight as much as is reasonable. Cost cannot be a concern. Give it the best of everything (within weight limits), and play it at the ranges which best use your chosen armor schema, until guns that can pen you are all silenced. In a lot of ways, the right way to play it seems similar to how the Yamato class was intended. Though at least 12 guns, increased ammunition, tube powder, and superheavy shells are all probably implied. But in a lot of ways, the right way to play a super BB is probably the most boring way to play one.

Think you don't quite understand the turning circle. As I see it, it's the turning circle a ship has while at full speed and full rudder - if you change course normally, it doesn't use full rudder.

@masonborden55942 жыл бұрын
Thing about the death of the battleship, is that it fit this odd time where dive bombers were all the rage. Now with smart bombs and deep pen bombs, a battleship with a heavy armored deck and less belt armor would be the best move. Missiles are mid grade at best for damaging battleships, especially with a low superstructure build. A lot of our modern systems have basically made the return of the battleship not only viable but smart. The department of the navy has been working through designs and parameters for a modern battleship, with focus on air targets and being able to take deck hits from ordnance. We may not see it in our lifetimes, but as warfare evolves we return to the battleship. Its almost funny, the idea of the battleship crops up over and again in history. Someone makes a brawler ship with a lot of offense ability and incredible defense, a new technology makes it virtually obsolete, that tech evolves and a new battleship crops up that relies on countering that tech. From catapults vs lowships, to cannons vs galleons, to artillery cannons vs ironclads, to planes vs battleships. I eagerly await the next iteration. Looking at history, the battleship cannot be killed. It only evolves to the next era. Like crabs. Evolution hit peak optimization, now it just needs to modernize some and its once again ready to go another 100 years of dominance
@TylerS13272 жыл бұрын
@@masonborden5594 you’ll never see the return of the battleship and tbh you are meg to see the death of carriers soon with hypersonic weapons there’s a reason most navies have only destroyers and frigates because they are harder to target, slow moving large ships are a thing of the past

There they delt with the other major world carrier fleet beyond allies. What country other than the US and Britain need to deal with such, or the US early experience with suicide tactics?

By the end of WW2 everbody was covering their ships with whatever AA guns would fit. Just look at all the 127 mm and 25 mm guns on Yamato by the time she was sunk. The trend didn't survive after the war because surface-to-air missiles replaced them.
