Chelsea & Tony Northrup review the Sony a6700, a 26 megapixel APS-C mirrorless camera with 15 frames per second and 4k video at up to 120 frames per second. They compare it to its predecessor, the Sony a6600, and Canon's closest competitor, the Canon R7.
Together they test the three best mirrorless APS-C cameras for sensor stabilization, portrait photography, wildlife photography, sports photography, low-light video image quality (how much noise is there at high ISO?) to find the best camera for you.

Tony mentions that the a6600 does not have a flip screen and he could not see himself when doing a selfie. That A6600 actually does have a screen that can be flipped to face forward. Just grab the screen from the bottom, pull it toward you and then swivel it up. It is now positioned (mostly) above the camera and facing forward.

Yes, but what if you use a top-mounted microphone (like most) or any other accessory ? That's why Tony's point is relevant : not a tilting (and unobstructed) screen.

Why would someone choose the APS-C over the FF. The answer is simple because I just made that choice. I'm travelling Asia and the weight of the camera system is a big deal. I'm on the A6400 + Sony 11mm F1.8 + Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 + Sony 85mm F1.8 = 1.25kG total. It's not the weight of the body thats the issue, its the weight of those FF lenses. I sold my FF A7RIII and FF lenses in order to 'downgrade' to the lighter system. The lighter weight is just so much nicer to travel with.

Important to remember that that choosing full frame over APS-C also means lenses are much larger, heavier and more expensive. For those who want to travel light, think less about the bodies and more about the glass.

@@truthseeker6804 Yes, but I'd happily take an f-stop of low DOF away for the portability and cost reduction of lenses for travel. Not so much for portraiture, but most travel/street/journalism photography is fine with a bit more in focus. I think there's a place for APS-C and it's not a valid argument to suggest that when prices of APS-C and full frame bodies are similar that full frame is a logical "winner".
@truthseeker6804
@truthseeker6804 10 ай бұрын
@@InstructorWest when the prices are similar, the apsc has to have many specs advantages that would overcome the full frame, then i would say the apsc is worth it for specific usecase. but if the specs difference isnt much, then the full frame is the clear winner. this a6700 is a good camera, my issue with this camera, its slightly overpriced. it shouldve been at $1100 and sony should release a better apsc camera to compete with the canon r7, a camera that can be used professionally, dual SD, more megapixel, faster fps. but this a6700 is good for video, but overheats fast tho. its got too many downsides. if you rarely do 4k120p the canon r7 and r8 are much better cameras for similar price.

Thanks for the review Tony, I think you have missed a few things, I have a A6600 and it's and all round camera for me, landscape, astro and wildlife, occasional portraits and ocourse video. It would have been good if you added in that this camera is an all-rounder and included sensor performance for low light in stills, also improvements and performance in low light, and stabilisation for video with a long lens. I have invested in Sony and third party lenses so it's an easy choice for me, I'll upgrade to the A6700 when I get a good deal.

I mean, the Fuji XH2s, XH2, and XT5 are arguably all better APS-C cameras than any of these, but are a little more expensive. I’d think the X-S20 would make sense for sure. This channel has a pretty well-documented anti-Fuji bias. A lot of what is reported about GFX is just inaccurate and Tony seems to be hyper-critical of Fuji’s X autofocus, which I think is only somewhat fair right now. Fuji autofocus has improved a lot…

I have the full frame Sony A7R IV and I'm seriously considering buying g the A6700 as a second body. Reasons: 1- I can use my existing quality full frame glass, unlike Nikon or Canon. 2- The smaller body is ideal for Street Photography and Travel. I do a lot of event photography, so having these two cameras with me and the A6700 sporting a 16-35mm lens (full frame equivalent of 24-50mm) will be an ideal set up.

I'm getting an a6700 for my f2.8 Tamron zooms. Nikon's Expeed7/8 will narrow the gap. HUGE shout out to Sony for how much better the color looks compared to the others in this video!

The A6600 has more Custom Button options, they have removed the switch button from the 6700's back that I specifically use, and overall I had the impression of intentionally downplaying the a6600 just to promote the newer version. I have NEVER experienced ANY autofocus issues with the A6600 and have no intention of upgrading for what I can tell from the review. Yes, I'd love to have the better LCD and the USB-C and the memory slot inside vs under, but I would miss my Custom Button settings I already have on the A6600. The A6700 is a great camera obviously, but for me, it's not worth the upgrade.

On runners coming towards the camera, bright sunlight, 1/2500 s and faster, about 3% are fully sharp, most are sharp up to 100%. I would count only 3% sharp, to be compared to your 83%.

For me the large array of small lenses available for Sony E mount is a clear win. I actually own both a Canon EOS R5 and Sony A1 and for the Canon R5 I don’t have a single RF L lens that is nice and small for light travel. I would like to see some running/sports focusing test inside where the lights are dim. Testing in older gymnasiums, basketball courts and hockey rinks. Focusing speed outside was always pretty fast at least for me. How close are you shooting for the eye, headshots? A crop sensor doesn't change anything on full frame glass not even depth of field. A F2.8 400mm will have the same depth of field and characteristics except it is cropped. APS-C 20 megapixel has about the same pixel density as a full frame 45 megapixel. This was not the case with the older 20 megapixel full frame.

@@Berry_N I was early adopter of Canon R7. Here is list of the things I didn't like about R7. - shutter shock -AF hunting even with RF 100-400, sometimes you had to peek AF in EVF, cause I got AF confirmation it is locked on subject, but I had to pump that AF-ON button to see it is focused (this was biggest drawback of this camera), this problem is not that big of a deal if subject if filling the frame or contrast is good -32mpix sensor is just too much for normal user, details got crushed in shadows which was critical for my work (I shoot in woods) so sometimes I feel FF would be better solution but FF is not ideal for wildlife on budget and reach Still think ergonomics of R7 are great, battery life is great too. Dual card slots, button customizations, EVF, screen great. It was tough decision to part with it but I just might buy A6700, still have A6100 which has great sensor much better for shadow recovery than R7 and more details in general since 24mpix doesn't resolve lens flaws.

Thinking seriously about picking up the a6700 as a second camera since I'm already invested in the Sony ecosystem. But, will never ever use it as my primary go to camera having had multiple card failures in the past, the first of which wiped out a super important shoot prior going to the A7R3.

Great review! I personally dont understand this canon poor lens selection topic. Why you dont count EF selection, what is huge and they adapt almost perfect. For birding, I dont care some tammy 150-500, while with little extra i can buy EF 300mm f2,8 is1 used... For me this big plus for canon, sony shooters only has 200-600 and next step is already new big white lenses with big prices, 2000$- 10000$ range is empty.

I really like Chelsea's points. She almost always takes a very practical view that the average hobbyist or enthusiast can appreciate. She also weighs budget more than Tony even if she's used to an R5, A1, or Nikon Z9. Tony's taste and preference almost always leans to the more expensive options. Understandable since he can afford any camera and nearly any lens or camera body he chooses.

My a6700 should arrive Aug 15. Can't wait. It is mostly for the ai auto focus that I wanted to upgrade. That should cut out missed focus most of the time. Second for me is better low light performance due to the BSI. I will appreciate the new adjustment wheel in front of the shutter button. For me the "fully articulating" LCD screen is a downgrade. I only ever use the tilt feature and that has been impacted by the new design. I can understand vloggers who want to see the screen facing forward. I just don't do that. Fortunately this is overall a low use feature for me. I'll live with it. I have a Panasonic bridge FZ1000 with the fully articulating screen so I'm not new to the game. I sold my 6400. The 6600 now becomes the back-up camera.

I've used both Sony and Canon mirrorless cameras for years and had great results with both but I've never had more than a couple of lenses for either at any one time. I'm not a pro but have sold many a picture for enough money to buy my next camera and lens and, again, have done so with either platform. I'm not sure even many pros realize how good even an average camera today really is. We've been so spoiled for choice that it's come down to a game of pretentious nitpicking. For me the ability to use third party lenses is important and if I've ever had a real issue with any camera it's been with low light so those are pros for the Sony for me. Dual card slots have never mattered to me and frame rates are close enough to not matter as well. Colors have always seemed more natural to me on Sony cameras as well so for me if I were paying I'd buy the Sony. But if someone were to give me the R7 I'd be perfectly happy. The real kicker though is that a couple of times a year The A7III is going on sale for around $1500 and, of course, as you mentioned, Canon has the R8 for virtually the same price as the R7. Soooo, for me I'd wait for the sale on the Sony or buy the R8 and just go full frame and be done with it. Actually, that's what I did.

For the best quality images, I shoot full frame. But, when I want a smaller lighter system and don't need the highest resolution, I use my a6600. I thought about buying the a6700, but I really don't need the improved video capability. So, I bought a second a6600 for about half the price of the a6700. On my next travel vacation, I'll take the two a6600 cameras and a couple lenses.

The only reason I carry a Sony cropped sensor camera is for travel and portability. I prefer the Full Frame factor for serious photography and actual gigs. Travel and second body uses is where the far more compact rangefinder style Sony blows Canon away. No mention here of how the Sony fits in pockets and waist packs.

You said that for low light the 6700 is better. Most wildlife photography is shot in low light (think golden hour or forests/jungle). More pixels on the same size sensor equals more noise. I have an A7IV and am thinking about the 6700 for a second camera to limit changing the lens.

Love you guys so much. The reviews are always excellent, both thorough and enjoyable. But I can’t believe you didn’t mention the Fuji options in this battle. The XS-20 might not quite land in the same performance bracket for autofocus, but for everything else it wipes the floor with those two, doesn’t it? Maybe that’s a bit too dramatic, but still… would be good to hear your take on Fuji when it comes to APSC battles. Thanks again for all the quality videos.

My only argument/debate with the R8 versus the A6700, is that sure you can get shallower depth of field with the full frame sensor and glasses are mostly made for full frames especially exotic ones, are that third party companies have really upped their games when it comes to cropped sensor mirrorless. Sigma are popular with their primes specifically made for crop, Tamron are popular with their 2.8 zooms for crop. Viltrox are now competing with their 1.2 primes. This is really important because the lenses built for the fullframe are either super expensive compared to the low end model, and the low end models(Sony e 50 1.8) are not superior to the crop versions from Sigma( 30 1.4). These third party lenses enable to give you that shallow depth of field you are looking for in the full frame, and I will also claim that because crop sensor bodies have denser pixels per inch, lense made specifically for crop sensor high density sensors would have to be super sharp to resolve the megapixels, and sensor technologies have come so far the noise levels especially at lower ISOs are basically negligible. Because of these I've resolve myself to the a6xxx ecosystem.
