Question: If you were offered a free benchtop power supply and there were two supplies, both new of the same rating, make and quality (you don't know the prices); one was a linear supply and the other a switching supply, which one would you take?
@WattHour Жыл бұрын
Of course switching power supply without any hesitation.

@@WattHour Even if they both just had a 4 digit readout, CC and CV, with no other functions or readouts? Wouldn't the linear supply have less noise on the output?

@@WattHour If i understand it right, the linear supply will have a transformer and the output of the secondary and the supply will be isolated from ground, but is the output of the switching supply isolated? I guess they both could have a transformer and isolation. Are some switching supplies isolated and some not? (I'm in the US with 120V power one side neutral grounded)

There are isolated converter (switching) you can buy. if energy is does not matter, then use linear. Linear is wasting sometimes like more than 50% .

@@WattHour I have been buying some new power supplies and picked up a breakout board for a computer ATX supply. Those are switched and clean enough for computers so no problem. A linear supply will have to burn off a lot of power and most all of the supplies are switching now. I'm still trying to figure out how to test the limits on a supply and it's tough without an electronic load. I have this massive spreadsheet of light bulbs, rheostats and Christmas tree lights I have and I'm about to give up trying to get it to come out right. My first supply is 120VDC and I don't have anything adjustable to feed that into, but I think for the 30V supply I can just feed it into a buck converter then burn it off into a load and adjust it until I hit the limits. maybe.

Why did you put heat shrink on the ends of your leads? it looks like you soldered a smaller wire to the end of a larger wire. Was that to get it under the screw terminals? Maybe you wrapped some of the strands around the end of the insulation and then soldered them? hmmm.......
@WattHour Жыл бұрын
yes. there were lot of threads of wires and I cut half of them and then soldered them to keep them together and fit securely under the screw.
