Dewy pines (Drosophyllum lusitanicum) are beautiful, Mediterranean carnivorous plants that have a reputation for being difficult to grow. They are short lived perennials that take some nuance when watering but are so rewarding to grow! Damon will share all his best tips and tricks with you on how to grow these plants in this video.
If you’d like to skip ahead to any specific section of care, here are the time stamps:

"That's why it's good to have a bunch of them, always have too many plants!" Great advice! XD Thanks for another detailed video, I love all the information! I've been wanting to get one since reading they're from the Mediterranean and I'm in California but was discouraged when someone called them an annual, glad to hear that's not the case. I will definitely be eyeing one of these for my next acquisition!

Im in coastal Lithuania, with -4°F winters, serious flooding every spring and fall, and unbelievably humid summers, this place is a Dewey pine's worst nightmare LOL Nice video though, they're beautiful plants but I don't think I can provide em with the care they need so, ill just admire them from photos and such online 😅

I tend to cut back on water once the plant reaches 3-4" tall (the same time I plant them in the large clay pot.) No risk of the plant rotting if you do it that early.

@@California_Carnivores Yeah I know I'd like to, but it's been extremely difficult for me to keep them alive through winter. It's just too wet and cold, and even when protecting them from the elements the constant high humidity almost always results in the plant rotting.

Could the leaf change also be like byblis where they're using it to photosynthesize so they have everything on the bottom?

It may be a dual purpose; both photosynthesis and keeping the bugs from getting washed off

I just got one. Very nervous to transplant it. But, I can't find info if the soil must be dry or wet in the pot before to put the plant, or, if I have to water it after potting it.
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores Жыл бұрын
Use moistened soil before transplant and try not to disturb or touch the roots, they have a long tap root that hates being disturbed so moving a big ball of soil around the root is preferable to bare rooting it. And then water it in after you pot it up too!

After ordering a plant from you guys how long do I have to wait to repot I'm looking to buy some sundews and nepenthes
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 2 жыл бұрын
You should be able to wait a few years! Some Nepenthes grow super fast so if the pitchers are toppling the pot over, you’ll need to repot a little sooner

My grandson 5 years old really wanted a plant that we got from Home Depot. I thought it would die. But it’s been close to a year now. I have long grass like stem growing. They’re really long so I cut them shorter. Do I need to get rid of them?

Atter sowing, is it necessary to cover the pot with a translucent dome to provide high humidity? i did that last time but all dewy pine seeds are killed by fungus. Can i just let the pot in open air and even get some sunlinght?
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores Жыл бұрын
We do it both ways with success. So, if you want them to germinate quickly, you’ll want to cover them but check them every day. It’s a delicate balance of keeping the dome on juts long enough… You can also sow seeds and just be patient. They can take up to a year to germinate but will and do
