Misting the small pitchers with distilled water helps create pitcher growth and humidity ? Or does misting around them and on the plant help increase humidity and pitcher growth ? Can Misting the glass near the plant also increases humidity?
@California_CarnivoresКүн бұрын
You’ll want to have an enclosed space that you mist into if possible. Misting onto the pitchers is nice for them but won’t increase ambient humidity unless it’s happening a lot or it’s in an enclosed environment where the water content can be kept in

Can heliamphora (sun pitchers) and Australian pitcher plants (cephaltous) grow in the terrarium?
@California_Carnivores3 күн бұрын
No, it would be very hard to do and not good for the plants due to their very different growing conditions
@rageoftheredphoenix3 күн бұрын
@@California_Carnivoresok. Thanks for answering. Then cephaltous can grow better with Nepenthes Alata in a small teranium that I have? Then what other plants can grow well with the sun pitcher (heliamphora)? My sun pitcher is in a larger terrarium alone with led lights and a fan I sometimes use on it.
@California_Carnivores3 күн бұрын
@ they’re sooo different than all other plants; they want cool temps, high humidity and lots of light and that’s not what many of the other plants like. You can grow Sundews with them potentially and bromeliads (there are a few carnivorous ones) and Utricularia

When you buy a small size sarracenia on the website, how long does it take to grow full size traps from there? Also, would I be able to plant purp purp next to my pond? They grow wild in my state and the pond has an inlet and an outlet which should filter out nutrients. However, since the ground around it is wet, it freezes solid when it gets cold. On a side note, I sprinkled some rotundifolia around the pond and inlet, so I'll see if those pop up soon.
@California_Carnivores5 күн бұрын
It’s a little hard to say because the small sized plants grow fully working, mature pitchers almost immediately but they do get bigger and bigger every year but their ultimate size depends a lot on the cross. So small plants will have small, fully functional pitchers and take a few years to get to full size but it’s variable. To plant anything in ground is hard because these plants require specific soil with no nutrients. They naturally grow in sphagnum moss and peat bogs!
@CelulonTomato5 күн бұрын
@@California_Carnivores From the picture, the smalls look about half the width of someone's finger. Can it even catch a housefly? It seems it gets too narrow before it reaches the water. Is there any sar species in particular that has the shortest dormancy? And which one grows the fastest? Can they survive and divide indefinitely? (Google isn't much help)
@California_Carnivores4 күн бұрын
@@CelulonTomato Sarracenia can survive and keep dividing forever with proper care! There aren’t any that have a shorter dormancy really, some hybrids may have less hard of a dormancy overall but it’s not substantially different compared to the majority. But Sarracenia purpurea keep their leaves the best throughout dormancy if it’s not too cold. Smaller plants catch smaller prey and the digestive fluids can come up quite high in the pitchers.

@California_Carnivores5 күн бұрын

@bonitabromeliads5 күн бұрын
"we don't count that as carnivorous" Why not? Bacteria in the cups breaks down insects and the plant uses that NPK. Many animals rely on bacteria for their digestion and we consider those carnivorous. Why do we not consider plants carnivorous that digest in the same way? There's a whole lot of grey area in this definition. Also keep in mind that Catopsis digestive enzymes were not discovered until the 1980's and Byblis filifolia which was Initially thought to depend solely on symbiotic organisms for digestion was discovered to be carnivorous in 2005. That's a very obviously carnivorous looking plants. There are not a whole lot of deep dive studies into various bromeliads to look for new enzymes, but it's possible that many, if not most tank bromeliads have at least some form of undiscovered attraction pheromone or digestive enzyme that could classify them as carnivorous.
@California_Carnivores5 күн бұрын
The designation of carnivorous or not carnivorous isn’t really up to us, it’s part of the larger botanical community of Botanists and other scientists. There definitely is a lot of grey area than the definition of these kinds of things!
