E1M8 comparison is not relevant. E1M1-E1M7 time is improved by 6 seconds.
E1M8 is not counted towards the episode record, so record time is 4:51, even though the full episode is 6:12. The reason M8 is not included is because dos version does not display the time for the final map. Even though that is no longer relevant as sourceports can determine the time, the convention is still kept.
Description:
Real shame about E1M5, when I saw that 1:07 I was thinking I'd end demo right there. However I had a really good start, and then I followed it up with a pretty ok E1M6 before getting an amazing E1M7. E1M7 uv-speed record is 1:15, of course I have the advantage of having weapons, but a 1:12 in an actual episode run is crazy.
As always I don't do the route for E1M8 because all competition has been for the ExM1-ExM7 times, I think you should always get either 25 or 26 seconds on E1M8 if you have 10 rockets. It takes 7 or 8 seconds to get those together with the soulsphere on E1M6. Of course going for the void glide is an option.
E1M1: I will never bother with 11 seconds here, and always reset on 13 seconds.
E1M2: Good time, I sometimes take 26 seconds even and try to get a good E1M3 time.
E1M3: IL record is 40, so a 41 is really good. Think I got kind of lucky with the early shotgun blast to the demon so I only had to shoot it once to kill it on the way back.
E1M4: I pretty much always get 16 seconds here, lucky to not get blocked by that imp by yellow key door though.
E1M5: Great run so far, getting blocked at the start by the shotgunner and the demon is easily avoidable, but I messed up so I was off to a bad start. At least I didn't get too badly blocked going for the linedef to activate the bridge. Yellow key door was a disaster, hardest part of the run anyways, getting up that elevator quickly. Then of course there was the blue key part... I didn't
even know you could avoid waking up the spectre there, so I had to kill him because I messed up. The exit door was a mistake too, I didn't block the spectre behind me properly.
E1M6: Surprised I got 1:00 here honestly, thought it would be a lot worse. Thankfully the shotgunner that blocks the wall didn't shoot or something. I forgot what a good time would be, I think a lot went ok here, but not exactly perfect.
E1M7: Wow! IL record is 1:15, 3 rockets + chaingun obviously helps a lot, but a 1:12 in an episode attempt is crazy. As perfect as it's going to get really.
E1M8: A little bit disappointed I failed that jump at the end, but I already lose 50 seconds or so here to the lack of rockets.
I would have liked to have gotten a good E1M5 and E1M6, unfortunately it means I would have to get 4:50 or lower now, which might be a bit too much for my patience these days. Hopefully someone else will improve it, but it's been 3 years since 4m57s already :)
This was somewhat low effort for me, first actual speedrun demo in 8 months. I should be doing a nightmare all secrets run of doom 2 soon I think, which will include 100% on map 15.

It's too much to say "lore-wise", but since I played this first episode when I was 6, I never understood... Why do you get "consumed by demons" at the end - hurting you to 10% and then the episode ends. Why does that happen?

First episode plays on the Mars Moon "Phobos". At the end you enter the teleportation device to the Mars Moon "Deimos", which, according to the manual, has been teleported to the edge of hell. My guess is that this is what that teleportation to the edge of hell looks and feels like (getting eaten by demons). I don't know if it's just a vision or actually occurring. I mean, Doomguy is alive in episode 2, so... The second episode then takes place on Deimos and in the third you enter hell itself. However, I think one should not read too much into it. They probably just needed a cliffhanger ending for the shareware version.

@@smackedinthejaw Both Zero Master and I have done Hexen, I've spoken with him about it a couple years ago. At that time he didn't have interest, and since then MANY glitches have come out to take the full game under sub 9-10. My best was 21:24, Zero Master did 26? without as many glitches and with a harder one in the last hub map, so I do not doubt he could take it on if he wanted to.

AI movement is very predictable and everything is always in the same place here. Deathmatch you never know where someone will be and their moves are hard to guess. Not saying i would have any chance against the doomgod but i imagine someone who had played deathmatch more than campaign/story/episodes (im not even sure what to call it) would

I thought the same thing! But if I understand the description correctly, he was going for a record E1M1-E1M7 time, so maximized the run for that, which involves not getting many rockets. If he was going for a E1M1-E1M8 run he would have taken a 8 second detour in the prior map to find some.

Without even going to 2.55 to check i can tell you he leads a shotgunner to the doorway so that when the door closes it 'bumps' on the shotgunners head and opens back up. Same mechanincs as when you are stood in a doorway it comes so far down bumps your own head and goes up again

thanks, I had made some changes to the route with how I intended to use the rockets and I've always considered episode 1 to be one of the main categories in doom speedrunning. So I wanted to show of what I think improves the route and make it more difficult for anyone to beat the record, which I'm sure will happen some day.

Although I do understand at the time why the M8 time isn't included, this could cause problems in certain circumstances. For instance if you were to do a UV Pacifist episode of The Shores of Hell, a situation could arise where on one demo the Cyberdemon dies faster but isn't considered the record because the M1-M7 time is slower than another person whose M8 time is longer

It's because if you play The Ultimate Doom or The Classic Episode on the original executable (as opposed to a source port), there is no time given for M8 in any of the four episodes. It just goes to a text screen so Compet-N submissions had to exclude it

No because Compet-N was designed to use the original executable file and nothing else. Although source ports do now give the M8 time the convention from earlier is still kept, but I do know that some demos played through a source port stop before the time is given on the intermission screen
