That’s interesting for Dp battles. What would be more worth your while, choosing the final transformation or choosing their base forms. Both options have their pros and cons I guess

Base forms, 100%. Using Goku(super) and Vegeta(super) as examples, even if you are forced to fuse to keep one of the two from being K.O.'d, you're getting a character worth 7 or 8 dp, in exchange for a character worth 5 dp, and 3+blue bars. This is almost a worst case scenario once you get used to the team, and it's still benefitting you more to do this than to just pick a 5-cost and Vegito or Gogeta. This way, you can fit a couple of the lower cost units that are really good, like Master Roshi, Videl, Burter, etc.(check tier lists, there's a few good ones already) onto the team. A lot of the 2-3 cost units are very good for buying time because of their kits, and the fact that lower cost units can be switched out more often than high-cost units. Characters are also healed while on the bench, so the ideal way to play a team like this is to start with one of the characters capable of fusion, build up some blue bar, and swap them out for a low cost unit. Then, use the low cost units to whittle your opponents down, swap to the other fusion capable character, and use them as you'd like. When needed, swap to the other low cost character, stall for a short time, then swap back to the first character. Now you have the freedom to fuse immediately, or build a bit more blue bar with your starter if needed, allowing you to fuse into SSJ, or SSB forms right away.

3:05 frieza should be able to transform backwards though, considering that his ‘transformations’ are actually him powering down… ‘Final Form frieza’ is how Frieza’s natural state actually appears, everything else is just him artificially capping off his power

Lower cost characters can switch out more often, I believe powering down is better to stall with some characters, and prep to fuse. You can only fuse if both characters are at the same level of transformation, iirc, so powering down the character you intend to use as the trigger for Fusion before swapping them to the bench might be ideal.
