A lot of these feet have been around forever. I have a vintage ruffler foot, a gathering foot, a bias binder, a hemmer foot, and a walking foot for my antique and vintage machines from 1907 - 1960. It really only matters that it fits the shank of your machine. I do a test run with the gathering and ruffler feet where I mark and measure 10” on a piece of fabric, run it through and then measure how much it gathered it down (like 25%, 50% etc.). I play with the stitch settings until it looks right, and then give myself several extra inches extra on the gathered fabric and just cut off the excess when I get to the end. I put a note in the foot’s storage bag with settings for % reduction so I can refer back to it next time.

OMGOODNESS, an invisible zipper foot. My Home Ec teacher taught me how to sew in an invisible zipper. All of her dresses had an invisible zipper. She, was an awesome teacher. She saw my passion for sewing and took me under her wing, teaching me all her tricks & shortcuts. 🥰😍d her!!! I think she’d be so tickled with all these gadgets we have now. Thanks for your video.

I use a ruffler attachment for gathering, and I've never seen anybody mention this, but you can gather the fabric up more afterwards. So, I set it so the piece ends up longer than it needs to be, then gather it to the correct size by pulling the threads. It seems really obvious but it took a long time to realize you could do that 🤣 You get the benefit of the ruffler (the gathers are perfectly even and lay totally flat) without wasting any fabric having to trim it to the right size afterward. (Obviously you can't do this if you're making pleats or if you're attaching the ruffled piece to another piece of fabric at the same time) I assume you can do this with a gathering foot too but I've never used one

I just bought the gathering foot and can’t wait to try it out. I haven’t invested in a serger yet but I do have the brother side cutter foot and I love love the thing. If you are a beginner and want to improve your sewing skills or just don’t want to invest in a serger right now the brother side cutter is a great option. It saves me so much time finishing off my seams. There is a learning curve so if you get one practice a bit first. Also this thing is good for traveling. You don’t have to take a sewing machine and a serger. I got mine from Amazon for less than $50.00. I believe it was brother side cutter SA177 for anyone interested.

Most of these can be used with any fabric, though narrow hem and binding feet will have difficulties - or may not handle- very thick fabrics🤔
