Just discovered this game a few days ago, really hard to grasp how to use units properly, your videos are really helpful ! Especially I thought cavalry was ridiculously weak, now I will try to use it according to your advices

Tough for stone bridge at bull run (that I did before seeing this videos) I faced union brigade of 1.5k strong, not 800 men. I defended with two bridage of infantry, one on the wall, the other moving to "flank" union troops when they cross the bridge. I also had a battery in close range. Definitely worked !

I like to have a whole division of melee cavalry that can just gobble up units one at a time if they get too far from the main body or are on a weak flank

Very good video, I learned a lot! I will now be using skirmish cavalry on the flanks much more effectively, and not use melee cavalry so much as a sledgehammer!

I haven't played it. However, the game creator is very passionate about what he does and spends a considerable amount of time perfecting his games post-release based on feedback and analysis. So, if AoS is any handled in the same fashion as Gettysburg and Ultimate General, I'm sure it is great! Thank you for the wishes for my little girl!

Is there any reason to dismount your skirmish cavalry/mounted infantry, or is this always a bad idea? Do they take fewer casualties dismounted? Would this only ever be worth it if you were going to make them static behind fortifications? Just feels like a misallocation of the asset, but then why include the option? Looking forward to your input.

Think of them as over-powered mobile skirmish units. Overpowered by normal infantry? Sure. But, they can act as a delay tactic so you can get your main force in position. And then use the horse to quickly reposition elsewhere.

Nah, defensively picking off enemy skirms as the run out ahead of the enemy's main force is easy and subtracts a lot of firepower from their equation. I used 3 cav to systematically remove almost all the unions' skirms at both 2BR and Antietam, for example, and ended up slaughtering the regular lines with quite manageable losses when they finally got in range against my inf in cover.
