I live about 90 mins away from Gettysburg, been there many times through out the years. It wasn't uncommon to find bullets in the ground, even in the 90's, last time I was there.

Living near Gettysburg (PA) i have been to the actual site where the battle took place, and i can tell you it's definitely a fun and interesting place to go. If you're ever in the US i recommend taking a day and visiting it.

These indie strategy games do really seem to push for good AI as priority, which is great. Almost as if these guys have also been scarred by games ruined by bad AI... Unity of Command is another indie strategy game with outstanding AI.

I totally agree with you that Sid's Gettysburg is one of the if not THE best games I have ever played. I actually remember playing against Brain Reynolds when it was first released testing out the online play. He asked me some questions and we were trying to get it going. I was one in of the first places to get a cable modem in the US and that may have played a role in him using me for some testing.

As a long time civil war nerd and fan of Sid Meir's Gettysburg, I really appreciated this review. This pushed me off the fence and convinced me to buy the game. It's great and getting better, it may perhaps become as good as SM's Gettysburg. Thanks!

Sid myiers Gettysburg was get, This game needs more stuff tho and troops break too easy compared to Gettysburg version and units don't surrender unless they fix that already.

Very good job! For an Army Commander micro-management may not be historical. The lower echelons of command have to make quick decisions. Wonderfully, UltGenGb does not take "player-time forever" to move a Corps like other PC games. Which is why I have stuck to division level ACW table board games...until Ultimate General.

They should add DLC about Morgan's Raiders and their "Calico Raid" that got them all killed or jailed. I had a relation in the 21st Ohio Light Artillery that saw action with them. They ran through several northern states in an effort to pull federal troops away from Vicksburg and Gettysburg. Didnt really work out...

Gettysburg was the biggest battle of the Civil War, it's the biggest and bloodiest battle in the history of the Western Hemisphere. Antietam was the bloodiest day. And you are absolutely right about the Confederates.

@Mack: The commander of the battle would not have that much control over regiments, BUT the commander of the brigade SHOULD protect his brigade's flank by turning a regiment. One other major flaw in the game is lack of speed control, currently the game is way too fast. I too favour the Confederacy, except for the slavery issue, because they were fighting for their right to succeed from the Union, which is axiomatic in any democracy.

Hey Mack if you Loved Sid Meier's Civil War Series try Scourge of War Gettysburg it is on Par with Sid's Series and is well worth the money.

Mack I think I understand why you find the Confederates romantic. They were a large part of a country that were perhaps unequally represented and decided to rise up against what they saw as their oppressors. The game is released now, and I have to say they haven't implemented any of your suggestions that I agree are necessary for a full experience. It's 75% off right now, but I still won't buy because of the lack of features. I too agree that Sid Meier's Gettysburg is still the better game :) From what I've read, the game was designed for tablets, hence the over-simplification.

Great game and commentary.I have been a great fan and player of Sid Meier's Gettysburg since time began.I've just taken the risk of upgrading my system to windows 7.I was sure that I could get a compatibility patch for windows 7.To my horror there doesn't seem to be a download for this patch.What the heck can I do.There is nothing out there that comes close to Sid's masterpiece.Anybody out there can help me???
