The reality is somewhere down the middle. We have seen the destruction of huge publishers like Ubisoft have a complete downfall over the years. Too many hands on with no real direction, with few risks nowadays. People at the top need to trust those making the games and the creative people need to not be under constant pressure to sell 10 million+ copies. On the flipside KZbin and various other social media outputs know that the people out there on forums can have its fair share of jaded and negative fans. All they want to do is project whining and complaining about everything.

As someone who grew up witnessing the progression first hand of Prince of Persia (89) to Wolfenstein 3D, to Doom, to Half-Life and Unreal I cannot tell you how disappointing the following 20yrs of development have been. There have been some good, even great games along the way of course but what I expected to be playing by now in my mind's eye vs the reality of AAA games today is depressingly bad.

I have just started playing through Half-Life 2 again, I'm about half way through the game. It haven't really played HL2 since about 2008. It's amazing just how much better the A.I is than in modern games. What happened to modern A.I?

It's really telling when the number one criticism for the DLC was "It's just more Starfield" like it's a bad thing... like people REALLY wanted something that was different from the base game. Compare that to a totally different game, The Talos Principle 2. The core gameplay is so fun that when a DLC came out for it that included 3 new campaigns, it was also "just more Talos 2" but people LOVED IT because they got to have more Talos 2... because the base game is just so fun. I'm honestly surprised no one is pointing this out. Like "not wanting more Starfield" is just a given and no one brings up how crazy that is. It's like the WORST thing you can say about a game lmao.

I dont even have a gaming PC any more because I realised I can download most of the best games ever made from GOG and play them on my laptop. Games used to be a labour of love, but all the love has gone out the gaming industry. Games these days are just box-ticking cash cows that follow tried and tested formulas. There's zero innovation or risk taking or imagination. The worst thing is that this latest generation of gamers have such low standards and have zero taste. Games used to be a healthy form of escapism, but these days theyre an unhealthy form of escapism. Theyre like a crack pipe filled with micro transactions and cheap rewards.

Indie games can be slop or good, but *sometimes* the good ones aren't afraid to experiment and try something completely new that they can't predict if people will like it or not. AAA just doesn't do that, they're afraid to experiment and take risks. They just stick to predictable formulas that makes them money.

I won't pretend that I dislike AAA games, because I like some of them. But the last few years in particular are such bad examples of AAA. AAA gaming is like fast food; it's lazy, but gets the job done. But in 2024, my AAA video game fast food is undercooked, overpriced, and nickel-and-dimed as if every single condiment and milligram of salt had a price tag. Indie games are the more exciting market for games, by a huge margin.

It's been a pretty rough year for me, and I was going through some shit. I got my ps2 out of storage and set it up as I felt like I had fallen out of love with gaming and wanted to see if some of the older games I love would still make me feel joy. They did, every single one of them made me smile ear to ear and it made me realise that I havnt stopped loving games its just been such a cesspit recently with most modern games that it's made me actually despise most games now. It's very rare now to get a game that I actually fully enjoy because of all the predatory practices, needless padding for content, or over reliance on holding my hand as if I'm a toddler.

Ah, the 90s. I used to pick up _The Official PlayStation Magazine_ every month, and on the demo disk there were frequently 2~3 solid, interesting games every single month. Far too many games. You just couldn't buy them all. It was a very rare month that went by when you couldn't find a single thing thing worth playing. Now, I struggle to find 2 or 3 games a year.
