I planted cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli,and mustard greens this fall. I'm in Louisiana. Your seeds was the first seeds I have bought outside of my town, and I have to say I'm was very impressed . I had about 98 percentage rate on direct seeding, your seeds made a believer out of me. I am ordering all my spring seeds and taters from y'all, thank you for all the work y'all do and a awesome products.

First year using your seeds. I started Broccoli, Kale, Collards, and Kohlrabi in one of the HOSS TOOLS seed trays. I had over a 99% germination rate and they were up within 2 days. My sweet corn I started came up just as fast with the same germination rate. I've never had that high of a germination rate and usually takes several more days for the seeds to germinate and come up. Thanks again for the products and information.

Another great show with excellent, easily applicable advice! I've chosen the Green Magic broccoli this year because it's heat tolerant with the hope that I'll get some decent size heads this time. We usually have Winter hot periods here in Zone 9b that make growing cool weather crops a real challenge. My mother lived in Zone 9a and had no trouble growing it, even though she was only about 20 miles away! Our winters are a crap shoot - sometimes we get cool weather enough to frost and an occasional freeze by mid-December, and sometimes we don't see an actual frost until late January! Our last frost date is February 15..... I usually take your advice and add three or four weeks to it, and this Spring, had my best garden yet. Y'all know a thing or two, for sure! So far, I've had really good results with cabbage, collards, kale and rutabagas. This year, I'm trying things I seem to struggle with: Beets, squash and broccoli, but I'm putting them on drip tape and using your methods for reducing weed pressure. Let the merriment commence!

I put the second part of my seed order in with Hoss today. As I was shopping on the site I caught myself going to other seed sites and comparing prices and shipping costs. Then I was thinking, this so and so is a little cheaper and that one has free shipping. After about 10 minutes of jumping all over and driving myself crazy I stopped and realized that it’s really just one stop shopping with Hoss and this is why. There may be lower prices or free shipping elsewhere BUT I tell ya, nothing compares to their customer service and the other places don’t have videos on practically everything showing you how to get the best results (these guys actually grow these products their selves, lots of it) AND the website has all the info for every seed pack I ordered (and there were many 😉) listing the individual instructions, characteristics and basically everything you need to know to be successful with those seeds. And if that isn’t enough, I have asked a few questions on the websites on the chat box thing and got my questions answered every time with politeness that is unheard of now-a-days. How do you put a price on all of those benefits and qualities. You can’t get that on any other site, trust me, I have tried many. This will be the first time using Hoss so I can’t comment on germination or plants but I have no doubt that I will have a beautiful successful planting season. I am not going anywhere else ever again. All I need and more is here thank you so much. Oh and I received my shipment from the first order I put in and I think it was packed by the big dawg himself-Greg (unless there is another Greg). Not sure why but I was impressed with that. Made me feel special, lol. I know this sounds like a paid advertisement but I am not. I am just a novice to intermediate Gardner that wants to grow her own food and do it well. I think Hoss has set me up so I can do that. Thanks!

Buckwheat is not a nice looking cover crop but my honeybees are loving it. It is such a delicate cover crop but an excellent investment bc it drops hard triangular seeds and comes back the following year. My Hairy Vetch is up now too. It is another excellent investment bc it drops hard round seeds. It springs up when the temperatures drop. I like how it binds plants together like Elmer's glue. They both bring phosphorus up from deep in the soil. I am enjoying watching my Sunn Hemp grow. It takes (60) days to flower so I should have yellow flowers at the end of September! I've scattered my Peas. I am looking forward to seeing the different colored flowers that they'll produce. Peas like it cool and we up north are facing some cool weather. I have radish leaves growing. It has such a pretty light green color that it reminds me of spring:-) I have Mustard pods from where I planted it in June. Honeybees enjoy foraging mustard. Seed goes A LOT further with a planter. Brassicas like to wet soil. I have lots of nitrogen bc I spread Starbucks coffee grounds everywhere. The nutrients that they are offering saves a whole lotta back breaking trips to Starbucks. My car is literally full of coffee grounds! I like 3' spacing bc I am a homegardner. Market gardeners have to space their crops close. This year I enjoyed planting my Brussels outside of my hoops although I do have many w/in my hoops. My Long Island Improved Brussels did so well in the seedling stage that I had to plant many of them outside the hoop. I have Jade and Red Bull Brussels planted out as well. Jade is a standard Brussel and is hard to find. I got my seed from Hoss. I've been buying lots of cabbage and Vidalia onions from my local grocery store. I also have cabbage planted and onion seedlings. I already have a fat orange pumpkin growing from Johnny seeds that volunteered this year. I am in Pittsburgh, PA zone 6. It rains here all the time. I save my rain water in large mobile trash bins. I watered my Mini Love watermelon, 70 day, with (2) empty 64 oz Clorox bottles daily and the watermelon turned out nice and sweet. The mini melons are ideal for us up north.

Our rule of thumb is that it's ready to be planted when it can be easily pulled from the seed trays. You want a good root ball, but you don't want the roots to start wrapping so that the plant becomes root bound.

Cover crops have tons of benefits. Adding organic matter to the soil, preventing erosion, weed control, pest and disease control, nitrogen-fixation and many others. We grow cool-season cover crops in the fall/winter months on plots we're not using or letting rest. We grow warm-season cover crops between our spring garden and fall garden.

I have 2 broccoli plants I ordered from Tractor Supply and they are doing OK but one is slow in forming a head but has one now about an inch in diameter and the other the head got to about 3 inches and now it's starting to loosen up. I have them suspended in a semi-hydroponic double container that self-waters and I'm growing it under a 900 watt LED grow light. Soil is in the inner container and nutrient in the one that sits in. The tag on them doesn't tell me what variety they are, but I think Tractor Supply gets alot of its seedlings from Bonnie. For nutrients I'm using a solution of 1 tsp. Masterblend, 1 tsp. Calcium Nitrate, and 1/4 tsp. Epsom Salt per gallon of water. Do you think the ambient temperature is too warm, or should it have different nutrients than this? Also I have never heard of Chilean Nitrate. Is that better to use than Sodium Nitrate and if I'm mixing up a liquid solution should I be substituting that or adding something to the solution I'm already using? The micronutrient stuff you mentioned; can it be mixed into my current solution and is it water soluble, or should it be added to the soil dry and separately? Also, do you think I should up-pot these plants into a larger container? The pots they're in are about 4 or 5 inches wide. Can these heads be gotten back on track, or should I just cut them off and let side shoots form? Other than the broccoli I'm also growing arugula, two types of Basil, upland Cress, pepper starts, romaine lettuce, tomatillo starts, and Rambo Radishes. All seem to be doing well except for the radishes which are not bulbing up, and Jalapeno plants that are not wanting to get past a little sprout with cotyledons and then die off (or the seeds don't germinate at all). My Fresnos are doing great in the same tray. I'm using your seed starting mix on all except the Broccoli plants which already came in a mix and I was reluctant to disturb them since they were growing well up until the heads slowing and one separating toward the end. I have not grown cabbage yet but want to try it at some point. I was at the Grant Park outdoor farmer's Market yesterday and bout the biggest purple cabbage I've ever seen. Grocery store cabbage does not even come close! This thing is almost twice the size of my head! I'm assuming they must have given it lots of nitrogen from what you said in the video. I should have enough cabbage for a month from this giant one! It's so beautiful I almost hate to cut into it.

We don't. Most of the varieties we have tend to wrap themselves pretty well. If growing in late spring, early summer, wrapping may be necessary to keep the heads bright white.

Sometimes that happens when the sprouts never fully develop. Brussels sprouts can be tricky for sure.

How much 20-20-20 per gallon if you’re doing a soil drench?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 5 жыл бұрын
We usually mix a cup or two per 5 gallons. So probably 1/4 cup or so for one gallon.

I have heard that nitrates are regulated in Europe but not here in America

Seems like we've heard that before too. The commercial cabbage growers here definitely have free will on the amount of nitrogen they use.

@@gardeningwithhoss I know on Commercial lettuce crops the ones that are sold to the fast food stores some of their packaged have too much nitrates on their salads they can give you a belly ache because of nitrate poisoning
@gardeningwithhoss

That happens around here with collards, mustard and turnips. If you buy them at the grocery store they are guaranteed to give a belly ache. But homegrown ones just make you want to take a nap -- no belly ache.

How long do you let your drip tape run for adequate water and fertilization? Does it vary by age of the transplant or species?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 4 жыл бұрын
It will vary by crop. Once we can see that dark ring of soil saturation around the transplant, we know it has been adequately watered. This usually only takes an hour or so. For some crops like corn and onions, we'll let it run all night when they get close to their maturity dates.

If one removes the head of cabbage from the plant and leaves the plant behind will it still flower and produce good seed or does the head need to be present for this to happen and is this the same for broccoli??

Broccoli will produce secondary heads, although much smaller. Cabbage is pretty much done once you cut the main head.

We haven't had any issues thus far. We also use a good bit of our Liquid-Fish product to keep that from happening. Cover cropping also really helps.

Can i get per plant equivalent to the fertilizer requirements you gave
@Grumpyneanderthal
@Grumpyneanderthal 5 жыл бұрын
stevie henry divide the lbs (converted to ounces) of fertilizer to get ounces per foot. If your plant spacing is 12 inches that’s it. If it’s 6 inches the cut it in half

Considering you'd have one plant per foot, divide those numbers by 100 and you should be good to go.

I've got a question about dried corn. We grew bloody butcher this year and picked some in the milk stage and let the rest dry for seed and for grits. We put the dried corn in the freezer for a few days after we shelled it to kill weevils, but is there anything we can spray the corn with next year to help keep the weevils off? Thanks!
@gardeningwithhoss

Weevils are hard to eliminate. That's why it's good to store it in the freezer until ready to grind and use.
