In this multi-part series, Damon will show you how to grow carnivorous plants from seed. He’s been growing carnivorous plants from seed for decades and will be sharing all of his tips and tricks with you. This video is all about cold stratification, what it is and how to do it with three different methods to sow temperate carnivorous plant seeds like; Venus flytraps, Sarracenia, Darlingtonia, temperate Drosera, and temperate Pinguicula.
Be sure to subscribe to all the videos in this series, including guides to stratification, soil sterilization, Nepenthes seed sowing, and more.

Thank you, Damon! Just want to say to all of you how much I appreciate all the effort and time it takes to make and post videos to KZbin, the fact that it takes at least two, maybe three of you to get it done, like you people don't already have enough to do. I follow your videos and advice above others because I can see your fabulous greenhouses, rarities, new forms and hybrids you create, and IMHO there is no one out there that can compete in terms of knowledge, passion and excellence. This goes for the whole team. I continue to promote CC on my FB page, and I don't do that for many.

Oh my goodness, thank you so much 😭. That is so nice! It really does take way more work than I ever thought to make these videos but it is so rewarding to make new planty friends and reach so many people to share our love of carnivorous plants!

Great vid! I've been wondering about the bog grasses; do they absorb nutrients from the soil? If so, it might be useful to have a small patch of it in a bog container, to 'protect' the carnivorous plant roots from 'rogue' nutrients in the soil. I have some in one of my containers, and it doesn't bother me.
@California_Carnivores

They may help in that way, but they can quickly take over a pot. Watch out that the roots don’t choke out your other plants. It’s often the roots in the soil that become the big problem.

I have the perpetual problem of thick moss forming on the surface of peat moss. Sometimes, in larger plants it can make it difficult for some pitchers/flowers to reach the surface. I sometimes scoop away this thick layer to reveal tender peat moss below. In seedlings it is more troublesome in choking them out. Is there any way to solve this problem?
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 2 жыл бұрын
Moss is always a balance. We sometimes put things to grow outside, if they can tolerate the temps, as the moss grows less abundantly outside. Otherwise, we carefully trim it around small seedlings.

I made the mistake of not chopping up the sphagnum when I stratified my drosera brevifolia seeds and have been trying to grow them for probably 2 months now. Is there anything you’d recommend or just patience?
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 9 ай бұрын
That’s a mistake we’ve all made! You can try using tweezers to move the seeds around but that’s tough, it may be best to wait

Is there any problem planting seeds of different plant species in the same pot? Like pitcher's and fly traps together. I have some kind of seed pack given to me with several different species mixed together.
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 2 жыл бұрын
You can mix flytraps and Sarracenia together but try to keep the flytraps on one side and the Sarracenia on the other so that the Sarracenia don’t over grow the flytraps and crowd them out of the sunlight. If you can’t do that, you can still germinate them in the same pot and transplant them to new pots earlier, when they start to get crowded.

So can I put seeds in a pot with 4 parts peat moss to one part perlite. Put it in the frig for 6 weeks. Take the pot out at six weeks and grow them inside under lights?

I've been growing Venus Flytraps for the better half of my 15 years on earth but this next growing season I want to try my hand at seed growing some typicals. I have a very bright south facing window (with about 4 hours of direct light) that my indoor plants absolutely thrive by. My question is whether or not my flytrap seeds will germinate under that amount of light?
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 2 жыл бұрын
They may need more light than that to germinate well. If you could easily grow a tomato seedling, they would be happy in the same spot.

What is the microwave method for sterilization of sphagnum moss?
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 2 жыл бұрын
We’ll be posting that in a follow up method regarding soil sterilization. There are a few different ways but you can place your soil in the microwave and microwave it for a long time to really kill off anything in the soil. You can also bake it in the oven!

Once grass starts growing, how do you get rid of it without killing the plant/seeds?
@California_Carnivores

We weed early and often and it’s usually the moss that is the biggest enemy of small plants. For that we try to push the plants themselves to get as big as they can, as fast as they can

Bought some of the gremlin seeds from you and put them in one of the small grow containers under a grow light and nothing has happened. The light is on for about 6 hours a day. It’s been about a month nothing still. The container is in a grow tent in a unheated garage.
@California_Carnivores

It can take Venus flytrap seeds up to a year to germinate (shockingly stubborn!) did you cold stratify them first? I would also in read that day length slowly to 10 hours.
