This was Class "A" Wally. I have played enough ie almost 15 years and many teachers teach vocabulary but will not (or cannot) teach applications. You just did!! Excellent job. Learning vocabulary w/out application is a complete total waste of time. Remember in first grade your teacher taught you the words: spot, run, see? Only when you looked at the illustrated book with a dog running while a boy or girl watched did it make sense. At the top were the words: See Spot Run. Identical to musical education. I will always be a student of music and learning applications also builds my confidence! BTW, I love the ALT from from Melodic Minor!

Thanks my friend. I agree, context is critical to understanding these musical concepts. The "these notes work" approach never worked for me! Regrarding the melodic minor a half-step up, totally valid way to would it out! For me, it kind of obscures the function though - as Db melodic minor doesn't relate (easily for my brain) to C dominant. It's certainly a good way to spell it out initially though! Happy practicing!

@@drwallysax Great comment. When I said ALT at the end, I should have said I love ALT, the 7th degree of Melodic Minor! Too lazy to type! I am very analytical and I can visualize a lot of what my fingers are doing, what chords look like in my head. Play F7 ALT. Then play F minor ultralocrian from harmonic minor. To get the latter just flat the 7th of F7 ALT. So you play D instead of Eb. What I realized from visualizing things the last 3 notes go: D, F, F#. I said to myself that finger movement reminded me of F# Harmonic Minor. So, I realized i was on to something. I learned ALT scales just by repetition. BUT if you forget what F ultralocrian is just go up half a step and play F# Harmonic Minor! It is crazy but that is how my head works. Just don't ask me about English grammar!

Awesome video Wally! Well done and thank you. I was super excited to watch this bc I’m taking private lessons with an alto player in KC (who was a messenger) and this is what we’ve been working on. He jokes he’s just a poor country boy, so he tries to simplify things into what we already know. Therefore, he started me out by playing the melodic minor “scale” 1/2 step above the root of the altered chord. It functions the exact same way. So I’ve been diligently singing and playing these for the last few months and now you’ve given me some new lines to add using this technique. The singing really really works and you should have The Academy do it more. It was weird at first, but I do it all the time now. My musical journey has been turned upside down lately, and I often reflect on things you taught me the last few years to set that foundation. Thanks

Hey Hank, great to hear you're still studying! It's funny, initially I latched on the melodic minor 1/2 step up, but it felt like a kinesthetic pattern more than I wanted (like tricking my fingers into doing something they already knew). I don't like playing it as a scale - but it certainly doesn't hurt (much). Happy Friday!
