So glad to see this. I feel like there's not enough KZbin coverage for this. I have mine running bare metal on my Raspberry Pi. It's been challenging for myself since I knew nothing about Linux, networking, reverse proxy, and just the basics of Jellyfin like organizing metadata. Took me a good four months to get this up and running the way I wanted, especially since remote access was important for me. There's a lot of info floating around, mostly written by people who has been doing IT for a while. That's why I'm proud of my server, because it was exhausting lol

Thanks for a great tutorial and I finally learned something about Linux/Ubuntu in the process.

Good video. Jellyfin looks like a great alternative to Plex. I already got a lifetime Plex pass a few years ago and I've been super happy with it. But if I hadn't done that I'd probably be switching to Jellyfin.
@Quettesh3 жыл бұрын
Don't bother, if you already have lifetime Plex pass, there are only minor things that Jellyfin does better. All major features Plex does better - for example about 20% of my media library was incorrectly identified, library scan took many times longer and the codes support is just worse. The only better thing in Jellyfin I can think off is better manual metadata editor, but the point of a media server is that it should handle it correctly in the first place automatically.

Good video but you might want to make another one talking a bit more about adding libraries because that part at the top that says "For Linux on Arch Linux, CentOS, Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, or Ubuntu, you must grant the service user at least read access to your storage locations." this seems to also effect Linux Mint as well which is what I'm using it on. I have yet to figure out how to give the service user the permissions and there doesn't seem to be any guides on how that works even on Jellyfins website.

I feel Jellyfin has many missing things and miss handled stuff like handling resolutions and bitrates. It’s done client sided and not by the file or server capabilities. People have had issues when using a high bitrate video and if couldn’t use the highest bitrate on a Ethernet connected device so it should of been 1:1 almost. I also feel codec support is important.

Is the Backup Folder on your personal machine and the place JF will pull from is the one that is in your folder in the home directory running the JF server? So 2 machines (1 backup and other copy of shows/movies)? Is that for data retention in case 1 machine goes down? I first thought they were both on the same machine and was trying to figure out why 2 copes and why you would use FileZilla instead of just a copy command. Just wanted to verify. You have to SSH into the server. An example: if you create an AWS server and start an EC2 instance and use ubuntu 20.04 LTS you will have an ubuntu server hosted on AWS. At the end of the EC2 creation process there will be an option to create a .pem file that will hold a key that will allow you to SSH into the server. Once you are done creating the server open command prompt or terminal and type: ssh -i [FILE_NAME_HERE].pem ubuntu@[PUBLIC_IPV4_ADDRESS_HERE] from there you should be connected to the server and you will be able to execute commands within your server

Thought I found a solution to my issue that has been naggin on me all weekend, now into monday. It all started early Saturday morning when I thought this is the day that I will up grade my Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3 to 21.1. I Moved over from Windows 3 years ago and loved Linux Mint, but now that it has reached the end of it's life I thought I would upgrade this weekend. All went great till I tried to get my Plex running, I got it installed OK but Plex sees the drives but not the files on them. I have about 17 internal SSD drives mostly 1TB. mounted on a few USB 3.1 with about 10 ports each, that are daisy chained into a 4 port USB 3.1. This is how I have had my library set up for Plex and it ran wonderfully..... untill the upgrade. I tried modifying the fstab file as you show in 21:00. I only tried one drive to see how things would work, but after I save the file and come out and run the sudo mount -a command, I get the following message "Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened. The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which could be identified for example by the help of the 'fuser' command." I am new to Linux as I have mentioned and haven't a clue whats going to or what to do.... I know this is a while back now, but I think it's worth pointing out. I don't use Jellyfin, but I use Emby. I also struggled mightily with getting metadata for TV shows to work properly. Anime is even worse, just a heads up. This doesn't really apply to movies because it has less work to do (Emby, and perhaps Jellyfin, don't have to do nearly as much work to figure out movies, as they're only considering one file). Once I sorted out the process (which, honestly, is just making sure directory structure looks good), adding new shows was trivial, and getting metadata for it became a breeze. My experience taught me one thing: folder structure is god. First things first, avoid going too deep with folder structure. Flatten it as much as possible. A couple of methods accomplish this, and imho, one of them is the standout. - You can just all episodes in to one folder. - You can put all seasons in to their own folders without any root folder. - You take that step, but also contain them within a folder for the name of the show. Let's say you're trying to sort out The Simpsons. Ideally, your folder layout should look like "\The Simpsons\Season xx\" Within, episodes can be named a few ways. The one mention in the video (just calling them SxxExx) is fine, but it's crap if you find yourself needing to work on the files outside of the server software. My personal preference for renaming (when I have to) is the default FileBot format (it's paid software, and I'm not shilling for them, but it's exceptionally good at getting metadata and renaming files correctly). The format looks like "Show Name - SSxEE - Episode Title.ext". It's still a flat name, and easy enough for your server to parse, but verbose enough that you can look at know exactly what it is. If each episode is in it's own folder ("\The Simpsons\Season xx\Episode 1\file.ext"), that's also fine. Long story short, the server scanners are good, but it's in your best interest to make it's job as easy as possible. Rename and pay a bit of attention to folder structure and EVERYTHING goes far smoother.

How do you find your host address so you can access your library on other devices? Plex just does this automatically but the UI for Jellyfin just seems so much better. I'm a bit lost and can't seem to find any tutorials on how to host for Jellyfin.

I really need ur guys on the one, please!! if it takes for example 10mb/s to connect an IPTV service to my media server[emby/jellyfin], will there be an additional bandwidth requirement between the server and the IPTV station if over 50,000 devices are streaming the various channels on my local network?

found out a little tip also.. if you want a portable jellyfin and still want trailers i just get the trailer off YT and put it in the same folder as the movie...so folder Avatar (2009) inside that Avatar (2009).mkv and also Avatar (2009) Trailer.mkv...seems to work when i have no internet...

I like Jellyfin, but the library scan (At least on the Mac version I use) takes FOREVER to scan the movie library. Phew. Hours and pegs the CPU.

There must be some sort of issue with setup, I run my jellyfin baremetal on debian with ~65TB of media on a smb share (truenas) and it only takes minutes after the first ever scan.

Does Jellyfin just parse the filename just like Plex does. Damn I wish it would parse the metadata already in files. All my media files come with meta data.

@maxgunstone954 ; you can either find a means to download the movies or shows, or you can rip the movies shows from your dvd/bluray discs.

I realize this video is old. But running on a fresh 24.04 install, jellyfin web user might not have permissions to read content inside home folder. I will be creating a folder /home/content, and give it 644 access to the user running jellyfin.

I know this video was posted about 1 year ago. I'm having a hard time finding info on how to fix issues. I have an old laptop with an external drive, but my video is choppy streaming over my local network to my samsung a52. I'm running a newer wifi 6 router, and my laptop jellyfin server is connected to the router via ethernet. Any help/guidance solving this would be helpful.
