On a 21" wheel how important is the heavy gauge spokes versus the lighter stock spokes? I see lots of wheels on eBay using stock hubs and lighter gauge spokes. From my motocross days in the 1970s I know how easy it is to destroy a wheel by breaking spokes. From my bicycle racing days I know how lighter wheels and tires go faster. I like your approach and your insight. Thank you!

we are erroring on the side of caution with 10g, but it's also a production reason, the simple fact is, everyone who attempts to build wheels for the surron with 12g cannot source nipples large enough for MX rims and that right there is the biggest reason why we use 10g. We have recently found a new source for 12g spokes and nipples and will be building 16/19 with them (coming soon).

@ChargedCycleWorks2 жыл бұрын
Dual Sport and Light Weight are opposites, that does not exist. DS tires are DOT approved which means the carcass and construction must meet DOT standards all of that adds weight to the tire. The Shinko 244 is 6.5lbs on our weight chart, all things considered that isn't too bad.

I have an 18/21 set on my Cake Kalk OR. I’m running the Dunlop K990. Have you weighed the K990 front? I’m betting it also fits the RST forks. For someone who would want a dual purpose bike the Mitas looks perfect. Do they make a smaller 18” rear to match that tread? For what it’s worth, I did notice a significant drop in power and range going to 18/21 K990’s over the stock 24 mtb wheels it came with. Much more traction though.
@ChargedCycleWorks2 жыл бұрын
K990 is amongst the lightest there is, we have all the weights listed here at the URL below. Same problem on surron the 18/21 adds significant weight decreasing power and range, which is why we really only recommend it for those who are going to do power and battery upgrades. chargedcycleworks.com/pages/sur-ron-tire-upgrade-specs-and-weights

If I was going to order wheels for a 21/18 setup, is there any downside to having it setup with some offset? I'm thinking its better to have it and not use it than to need it but not have it.
@ChargedCycleWorks6 ай бұрын
Many of our bikes are 18/21 setup, they are awesome for trail riding and motocross riding, we would definitely suggest suspension with drop crowns so you get more fork clearance. Either that or install a zero stack headset on your bike
@JESSEverything6 ай бұрын
@@ChargedCycleWorks I've got forks with a drop crown. I'm trying to decide if I should have my new wheels laced with some offset in the rear to make sure whatever tire I end up with doesn't have clearance issues on the chain. Is there any downside to setting up a wheel this way even if I end up with a more narrow rear tire that doesn't require it?
@ChargedCycleWorks6 ай бұрын
@JESSEverything if you offset it by a couple mm you shouldn’t have any performance effects that will be noticeable. We have offset many wheels and don’t mind it. The vintage mx33 90/100-18 is a great tire choice for not needing to offset if you end up not wanting to

What's the weight of 21'' mx33 tires? From my research it seems to be 9'', so I guess you prefer Mitas over Dunlop as a front tire, right? Also is 2 pounds more on the front is really that noticeable, even with aftermarket battery and controller (I usually run 10-12kw setups)?
@ChargedCycleWorks3 жыл бұрын
All of the weights of the tires are on our website in the URL below. I would choose the Michelin StarCross over the MX33, killer weight at 7.3 lbs and just as much traction as an MX33. Mitas are sold out at the moment. For these reasons we have made the Michelin our standard tire with our 21" wheelsets we sell. It's a great choice for Surron. The more power you have the less you will notice weight increases, but all of this also affects your range as well. Lots of factors to consider, weight is always something we want to try to minimize. chargedcycleworks.com/pages/sur-ron-tire-upgrade-specs-and-weights

Hi, I’m getting my new surron next week and I’d like to change the tires to street tires as I live in nyc and also want the maximum width. What can you recommend ? Thx!
@ChargedCycleWorks3 жыл бұрын
We have not really gotten into street only tires, are you going to keep the 19" OEM wheels? If not and you want 100% street we see a lot going to a 17" rim for the best tire selection. Width is the biggest limitation, especially if yours comes with an RST fork which is extremely narrow you cannot go any wider with that fork. In the rear you can go wider but you'll want to be careful with that, it will need to be low profile for example our 3.50x19 Shinko Trials tires are a HUGE diameter which requires a 21" front wheel upgrade to match the diameter and not mess up chassis geometry. If you stick with OEM wheels our best recommendation are these, however we have access to many others we could explore. chargedcycleworks.com/products/shinko-sr241-trials-rear-tire-for-sur-ron-or-segway-x260-2-75x19

What about a 18/19 combo? I ask because the 19 inch rear tire is limited on tire selections. I ended up running a 19 inch front tire on my rear 19 inch rim. Thoughts?
@ChargedCycleWorks3 жыл бұрын
There are only really two great combos and they come from the MX world 16/19 and 18/21. The reason we don't typically do 19/21 is because a 90/100-19 does not exist and you need a 90 width to maximize what can be fit in the swingarm. If you run an 18" full size MX tire in the rear combined with a 19" front which comes off a mini-mx bike your balance and handling is off by quite a lot. A 16" combined with a 19" front is 1000x better, these sizes are made for eachother.

How about a18/19 set up instead of a 18/21 would that work ?
@ChargedCycleWorks2 жыл бұрын
If you mean 18 rear 19 front, the problem with this is the same problem with a 21" combined with a stock rear 19" tire. There is a pretty drastic imbalance in the bike both in traction and chassis geometry changes. With 18/19 you'll have this massive rear tire with gobs of traction essentially "pushing" your much smaller 19" front tire around. You've also raised the rear end significantly putting a lot more weight onto the front tire which is already at a traction disadvantage to the rear making things worse. If you only want to purchase one wheel we cannot stress enough that the 16" rear with your OEM 19" up front and upgraded tire like an MX33 is AMAZING and by far the single best upgrade you can do to your bike. If you want a 21" front you really must pair it with a 90/100-18 rear, and as soon as you do this open your wallet for power upgrades, you won't like stock power with an 18/21, power upgrades are certain to come next.

The RST forks are going to have problems no matter what tires you run, it's unfortunate that Surron ever put these forks on these bikes, they were desperate when they made this decision and it was a huge mistake.
