Yes no problem. For anyone who might be wondering, there were 4 scale diagrams that had the 4th note either missing or in the wrong spot in level 2. There was also an audio issue around 56 minutes in. It was honestly a tough decision to re-upload because I knew this would hurt the performance of the video but as a professional it's my job to make sure my diagrams are 100% accurate. Accountability: started about almost a month ago Learning the Dorian mode, and my first attempt going through all 12 keys took 5:05 min, now after a month I’m playing 5 modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian, Aeonian) 3 notes per string with reversing in all 12 keys in just about 14:20 min which is crazy for me. I can finally play without stoping on the major keys😅 Thanks a lot!

Another explanation that helped me to understand the modes: Major scale / ionian mode intervals: whole step, whole step, half step, whole step, whole step, whole step, half step or WWHWWWH All subsequent modes use the same intervals, but they are shifted to the left. So the dorian intervals are WHWWWHW, the phrygian intervals are HWWWHWW and so on.

100%, refering to modes as just shapes doesn't make any sense. To understand the whole picture you have to understand that a mode is a scale with different intervals.

@@KyLesCaster try learning which intervals are flattened etc., as well as tying them to songs while you learn? I've been practicing the grateful dead's dark star lately which is in A Mixolydian / E Dorian / D Major, which has helped me realize and build the muscle memory that Mixolydian flattens the major scale's 7th, while dorian flattens the 7th and 3rd, etc.

This is not modes. They're simply neck positions of the major scale. Many people teach it wrong and confuse people. Each neck position can be any mode, it's all about harmonic context.

Thank you for this I was confused by Brandon saying that modes are just major scales that start at a different note within same major scale. I thought, the major scale shape would just move to the "Mode". But in his tabs, i wasn't playing the same fret on the string. This comment clarified that, the steps you took from the Major scale to the Mode carries over and continues from there on to get 7 notes in two octaves.

Learned the formula for Ionian, Dorian and Phrygian. Ionian: Root, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. Dorian: Root, second, flat third, fourth, fifth, sixth and flat seventh Phrygian: Root, flat second, flat third, fourth, fifth, flat sixth and flat seventh. 😊

These exercises have made a huge difference. I do the 3 note per string one in all keys every day. I also do the triad arpeggio one in every key each day which wasn’t in this video! I’ll work in a couple more of these as they do really help in mastering every note of every key as well as each mode everywhere on the neck. Doing these backwards and on different strings is a great idea. Start that tomorrow. Thank you so much for this information!

I’m a big Eric Johnson fan and I try to visualize/use the fretboard like he does. It’s been rather difficult as I can see all of the pentatonics in all 12 the fretboard. But there is more to his pentatonics than that. But he can beautifully use a wider aperture of notes that aren’t just in the pentatonic scale. For the longest time I didn’t know where the notes came from but then the major scale started to make itself clear. It wasn’t just the major scale, but it was his mix of whatever mode was available to him near whatever pentatonic scale he was in. This video has helped me visualize the pentatonics in a more harmonious fashion. It’s been about two weeks and I can better recall intervals and I can see where I am on the fretboard with a greater degree of accuracy. I even got better at chord spellings which was always difficult. This video has put me one step closer to into understanding the anatomy of an Eric Johnson solo/ harmony. Thank you!

Imma start learning this today and update y'all of the progress everyday For context, I can already play some slow solos on the pentatonic scale, I only practice one shape properly, the a minor pentatonic. Only yesterday, I've practiced the G major scale quite a few times after watching another video of Brandon Day 1: Practiced G ionion and Dorian, just played it like a hundred times each tryna get my fingers used to it Day 2: Practiced Phrygian and Mixolydian just like day 1, not too fast either, 60 bpm where I play 16th notes Day 3: got decent with all the 5 shapes, now practicing them over and over again to be able to play them at 80 Day 4: pretty much the same as yesterday, didn't feel like it but got some reps in Day 5&6 : Didn't practice much, even the time that I did, I was just annoyed that I could barely hit 70 bpm in all modes when I changed the key, I'm thinking of going to 60 and go on for a few days Day 7, 8, 9: I haven't practiced scales but played some songs, it was a fun jam Edit: I don't even remember which day it is, honestly I haven't been practicing much either for the past week or so, idek when I'll get back to it

I didn’t comment “accountability” because I hadn’t gotten that far in the video. It was immediately apparent to me that I had to spend some time on Levels 2 and 3. So I did. For 2 weeks. Every day. In that time I: - Went from 80 bmp up to 93 bpm and then back down to 85. I make enough mistakes that I’d rather not rush through the exercises. 85 is the sweet spot though I might go up 1 or 2 next week. - Saw my times all over the place. Some of my times at 85 were faster than the same scales at 93. - Had my worst day on Day 14. Sure, it was mostly better than Week 1, but almost all of my times on Day 8, also at 85 bpm, were faster than Day 14. - Memorized a fookload of positions. For Level 3 I no longer need a cheat sheet to see what note/position to start on. This really came together in the last 3 days. - Changed picks. I’m 42, have been playing with red jazz picks since age 16. Switched to Dunlop Ultex in the last week which has changed the feel of everything (long term for the better I can already tell). Plan is to forego Level 2 and work on Levels 3 and 4 for the next 2 weeks. We’ll see where that takes me.

Day 4 : which is today , as in the day I wrote the first comment , I am practicing both the major and the Dorian with a 130 bpm metronome (with 2 notes each beat , so 260 notes/min) , I'm getting wayyyyy more comfortable with my guitar ( classical, though I'm begging my parents for a beautiful telly...) . Enough with the bs , I don't know the names of the notes yet , so I'll be watching that 5 minute video of the most epic guitar KZbinr ( Brandon OFC ) and I'll keep ya informed by editing this . Well , this is the edit , it's 3:14 am rn , and I ever watched the video again, O ly the first part though, and I finally understood that practice routine BC I didn't understand shot at first , so yeah , I still didn't learn the notes on the fretboard, I did try, watches arround 3 to 4 vids about it , but realised it's not that easy ... I'll try my best to do it tomorrow, hopefully I get it done . End of day 4

I was making all of those mistakes , it was discouraging as hell , and I even considered quitting, but I won't JUST LEAVE ! So I picked up my guitar ( classical btw... I hope to get a tele like my boi Brandon but I got no money...), enough BS , I worked in most of my mistakes , but one that I couldn't fix was my ring finger not rounding and smashing the strings , I was too weak , I'm still working on it Day 6 : more scales , I got better at the two first ones , and I added Phrygian , Im still learning it though rn , I'll work on it with a metronome after I learn it fully in 5 minutes , and I'll reply done when I finish it . your Dedication to not sugar coating and just telling straight facts is awesome. I teach Guitar. If the student Really wants to be good, they will. They will use any means possible to achieve their goals. Ask questions, even if they seem dumb at the time. Learn songs all the way through, not just the intro. The amount of Hours and Dedication a Julian Lange, Mancuso, Steve Morse, Guthrie Govan, Nuno, put into their craft is because they love it

Level 2 for melodic minor modes 3 notes per string passed successfully. Now, accountability for level 3, same scale modes.

Ionian is the major scale, Lydian is #4, Mixolydian is b7; Aolian is Natural Minor with b3/b6/b7, for Dorian it’s just b3/b7, for Phrygian it’s b2/b3/b6/b7. So 3 major modes, and 3 minor modes. Mode 7 is Locrian for a Diminished chord because it’s the only mode with b5 (b2-b3-b5-b6-b7). - Memorize all 7 formulas. Play all 7 modes starting from the SAME NOTE; that’s the best way to learn to hear them. Just starting them on different notes of the same scale will slow you learning to hear them; start all 7 modes from the same note.

This is actually really helpful. I know the modes but never knew how to practice them. I stopped at level 2 for now to prepare for the exercises
