An old boss of mine had his dad's machinist tools. The most fascinating thing in the collection was the cabinet the guy built for housing tiny parts. It had 24 slots and each slot housed a cigar tin, Dutch something cigars, Dutch Masters maybe. Anyway they were all matching and each of the slots held their tin firmly. To pull them out you used an old ham tin key to hook the lip of the top of the cigar tin. The ham tin key fit into it's own little slot that you had to know where it was to see it. Early form of anti theft technology, or machinist going full machinist mode, whatever the motivation it was a work of art.

I agree the box was owned by a moldmaker as evidenced by the polishing stones and ejector pins. The little thing you thought might be a reamer is actually for lapping holes. When tool steel is heat treated it leaves some scale and holes can close up slightly. You need to lap them to clean and bring back to size. I expect someone will someday be looking through my tool boxes wondering about stuff too.😊 Good buy, enjoy! Mike

That pin that you found in the drawer with the height gage is called an ejector pin. It’s used in plastic injection molds. It appears as though the box belonged to a mold maker or mold maintenance guy. All those stones are for polishing mold cores and cavities. The tools are well worth what you gave for them..

The pins with the discoloration from heat-treating, are "hot work ejector pins". They are intended to move freely inside mold bases operating at high temperatures, and are therefore normally .0001" undersized. Similar looking pins that lack the discoloration, are commonly known as "accelerator pins", and are more likely to be "full diameter" pins. Both types are considerably harder than "drill rod".

I'm sure there'll be plenty of viewers on here who can give you chapter and verse on a lot of the unknown items in that box. I think it's fair to say that the price was an absolute giveaway, and it's nice to hear of someone meeting a seller on one of those sites who wasn't out to make all the money on his item but just wanted to see those tools back being used as they were made to be. There's still some good guys out there, though they seem to be getting fewer by the day...

@pkuudsk99275 жыл бұрын
Every one of them stones were shaped by hand for different molds , Nothing special about them unless you have the mold they fit. The pins are from injection molds to release the parts from the mold , the reamers are for cleaning out pin holes. Gene Neseth is 100% correct , this was not a Machinist box but a maintenance box for molds. The tools are worth much more than 150, good find , EDIT Lots of love in that box ,to care and detail.The drill bits and end mills are probably not new but only ever hand used kept to perfect condition My first hand polished mold was/ is in millions of people homes , it was the crisper drawer in a Westing house refrigerator. That same mold was used in many other brands over many years. It was the first clear plastic drawer back in 1982 to my knowledge. Probably more than 400 hrs to hand polish that mold, before cnc could get anywhere near that kind of finish. Seeing the first part come out so clear was like a new baby for me. Making a mold is not easy , keeping one in good shape is harder after a million parts are made from it , running 24-7 for years.So what ever them stone's are for someone is wishing they had them to fix that mold if they were the original stones to copy from.

12.04 Ejection pins for injection moulds, the rod you put in the bike, is for layout with a height Gage into pockets of slides on moulds most likely , bottom drawer 1-2-3 blocks for set up or layout . the cutter that says warp , can be fixed , the stones are for polishing MOULDING surfaces ie slides and plastic injection Moulds seal off areas. The stones are worth over 150 bucks alone , some will be 2000 grit , Best Regards John

Nice score! You definitely got a deal all the way around. Start pricing some of those drills and endmills and see what you come up with, you'll be shocked. Just the box alone is probably 600$ plus. Those Kennedy boxes don't come cheap at all. Those Helios/Fowler dial calipers are good ones as they should be German made. I have the same ones which I use every day without fail. Nice 24" rule in there also which is not cheap. I've made a couple scores like that myself over the years and I still get excited about finding stuff like that because I use those tools every day at my home machine shop, which is my second job and my first love. I always scrounge around for tools, supplies, and machinery because I can't afford much new stuff. I am always looking at auctions for something I need and you have to be patient at auctions because more often than not, the deals come at the end. I just bought a real nice 10" Brown & Sharpe dividing head with tailstock and 3 jaw chuck for 150$ at auction 2 weeks ago. I was really tickled because it wasn't one of those cheap Chinese knock-offs either. I also watched a K&T 2H Plain horizontal mill with tooling in immaculate original condition sell for 250$! I had to exercise great restraint on that one.
