Powerlifting is built around three lifts - the squat, bench press, and deadlift. Therefore, a home gym designed for Powerlifting will require equipment that allows these three lifts to be performed, while also aiding in strengthening these lifts. These are the pieces of equipment we suggest from Rogue Fitness to build the Ultimate Powerlifting Home Gym.
Powerlifting has its roots in dimly lit garages where mythical tales of triumph and defeat were on display under the veil of heavy metal, chalk, and blood. Men mightier than mountains (in their own mind) have been built through home gyms since the beginning of the sport of Powerlifting, and whether you plan to compete or not, Powerlifting as a training regimen is highly effective. Although there are many who travel to gyms to train, these people will never experience the joy of stepping out your back door into a training facility enviable by even the best outfitted commercial gym.

Assembly by myself was not too hard. I took my time and followed the diagrams. I particularly like the pictures and names of the exercises organized by muscle groups on the front of the kzbin.infoUgkxKJHyBZ9I1py9vVi-XLpEBg0y-qmdhn3q . Considering the number of exercises it has a relatively small footprint. I needed a machine that was not too tall because I only have 79" headroom in my cabin and this was just over 78". It is easy to use, seems to be well made, and I am pleased with my purchase. I am doing upper body muscles on Monday and Thursday. Lower body exercises are being done on Tuesday and Friday. Not using it on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday. I am a reasonably fit 66 year old man and this is a great workout.

I love having my own home gym and really enjoy watching this channel. Maybe I got lucky but I bought the Rogue boneyard raw deadlift bar (saved $100). Besides a tiny nick on the bar I don't really notice anything wrong with it. Maybe there is double tracked knurling somewhere but I can't find it. I also have the ohio power bar black zinc and it is a great barbell too. Rogue has some fantastic equipment if you are willing to spend some money. On a budget, I think Titan has some good stuff.

How good is stainless steel for corrosion and other longevity factors compared to cerakote? And which requires more maintenance if any? I was going to buy cerakote because it basically has no maintenance and will last very long but what you just said about the knurling on stainless steel bars intrigues me. What's so amazing about their knurlings? How does the knurlings compare to cerakote? Thanks love your channel, it's inspired me to make my own home gym
@GarageGymReviews
@GarageGymReviews 6 жыл бұрын
Cerakote should have better corrosion resistance than SS, but since there's no coating on SS, the knurl is deeper and has a much better feel IMO. Knurling is so personal though.

Rogue makes good equipment; I really hope it's made here in the USA, too. However, I do not have Rogue equipment because it's 11-gauge; I have Samson equipment which is 7-gauge (50% thicker and stronger than 11-gauge) and USA made. Only drawback about Samson is that it is expensive, but then again you get what you pay for. Stainless steel IS the way to go, too.

My ymca charges 51 per month for a family membership. They don’t have everything I’d like but they have most of the equipment I really need. Note: I’m training to stay healthy not for any sport in particular. My job requires me to pass a physical each year so being fit is a big deal to my livelihood. These are some cons to having a home gym. One 12k would be like 19 and a half years of membership payments two, sometimes I see some workouts that I didn’t know about and then end up giving them a try three there are occasionally some smoking hotties in the gym. Totally makes being there worth every penny lol. Of course I would love to have 12k to spend on this stuff. I’d have a hard time not working out on rest days cause I’d want to mess around all the time.

only reason i'm not a fan of the R3 is that you HAVE to bolt it to the ground..... because of how narrow it is. The wider or deep the rack is the lower the center of gravity is meaning you more than likely can get away with not bolting it down.... especially if you have weight storage on it. I think it's absurd though how much rogue marks up the R4 compared to the R3 though. It's the exact same rack just that the distance front to back between the uprights is 4 feet not 2. so those 2 extra feet in crossmember length makes the price go from $695 for the R3 to an insane $960 for the R4.... damn near $300 mark up for 2 fucking additional feet of steel on 6 crossmembers counting the safeties. If you get safety STRAPS that's only 4 crossmembers at an additional 2 feet a piece (and I prefer straps). So that's only 8-12 additional feet of steel tubing for $265. That's $22-$33 per foot. You can buy 8-12 feet of 3x3 11GA square tubing for $70-90. And that's retail. I'm sure Rogue has a killer bulk deal on steel tubing. For them it's probably more like $40-50 for the same footage.... if not less yet. Point is..... the mark up from the R3 to the R4 is bullshit. I can't imagine too many people wanting to punch 8-12 (however many holes are on each foot) holes into their garage floor. Can't be too great for resale of the house when you go to sell it. The usual workaround people do with this is they build a platform and bolt the rack to that, but at only 2 feet wide that still seems crazy top heavy. You'd have to build a pretty big platform for it, otherwise I'd still feel like the thing would tip the whole rack and platform over the second you jump on it to go do pullups, and if not tip over, split/break your platform if it isn't big enough. A solution to this is if Rogue makes arms/brackets for the back of the rack that you can attach to the rack and then lag bolt to the wall. But even then I'm sure they'd charge like $200 for the damn brackets so you might as well just get the absurdly priced $960 R4. And if you're going to spring for the $960 R4 you might as well jump up in quality to the RML series and get the RML-4 for like $983. That pricing is why I wonder why they even bother making the R4. Who on earth would buy it? The price difference between the R3 and it is so massive, but the price difference between the R4 and the RML4 which has the 3x3 tubing and is up a "class" is only $25 more in price. So if you buy the RM-4 because you didn't want the RM-3 due to top heavy concerns.... you're stupid becuase you could've gotten the beefier RML-4 for only $25 more. Honestly, the whole Infinity series price points make no sense to me. Just toss down an itty bitty bit more in cahs and you can get the RML version of the same rack. Granted no one probably NEEDS 3x3 tubing..... ever, even if you have like an 800+lb squat, but why not. If the beefier tubing makes the rack even slightly sturdier/less wobbly the tiny markup from the infinity series makes it worth it. And if you have $700 to spend on the R3 or $960 on the R4, how much longer would it honestly take you to scrounge up the money to instead spring for the RML-3 for $755 or the RML-4 for the $983. Not long.... in fact you probably could afford it right now if you can afford the R3 or R4. The infinity series is pointless. Solid video though, once again........ but get on that ForceUSA MyRack review I asked about before, haha.
@GarageGymReviews
@GarageGymReviews 6 жыл бұрын
The reason the RML series is priced so similar to the infinity line is because Rogue wants you to opt into the ML series. The reason being, the accessories all cost more. I could see them eventually phasing out the infinity line as most new accessories are released for 3x3 tubing, not 2x3. Great points though!

CodedToast I subbed after I saw the Titan vs. Rogue rack comparison video. Just don’t see how this is even valid. If I had enough to buy this gym I’d hire someone to shop it. The channel is Garage Gym Reviews. When it gets to the point where the gym costs more than the car the garage is for, that’s just ridiculous is all. It’s like having a channel devoted to DIY and doing a video on a $50k kitchen remodel job.

Hey, Coop - Little late to the game....wonder if Rogue would give you a price break as well if you purchased over $10,000. I hope so, ‘cause after adding all this and more to the cart...I accidentally hit the PayPal button. Oh, well things happen. But, seriously - do they offer price breaks over certain amounts? Free shipping is great...still a little pricey. Have a good one.

Why would you go with an r3 over an rml-690? It already comes with plate storage plus it’s much sturdier.

What's with the infatuation with the R3? The rack is only 24" in depth and squatting inside of racks that small seems almost claustrophobic at times. Why not get the a rack with a slightly larger footprint like the RML390 or even R4 if you can afford the extra space? I guess I just don't get it...

All the people complaining about the cost of this “ultimate” gym must be living in their mother’s basement. How much does the 400 square feet cost? My house is in a neighborhood where houses sell for more than $500 per square foot. The neighborhood I want to buy in costs $1000 per foot. So, the 20’x20’ gym costs $400,000. Taxes, insurance, maintenance, etc runs another $30,000 per year. So, in 20 years I’ll spend a total of around $1,000,000 just for the space. Another $20k more or less is just a rounding error. MY complaint about this video is how can you call it “enviable by even the best outfitted commercial gym” when it doesn’t have a leg curl, leg press, belt squat, seated calf, standing calf, hydraulic lift, etc. Also, selectorized weight stacks are much more convenient than plate loaded machines especially for guys who want to workout with much smaller and weaker wives, kids, friends, etc. There are other machines that I normally use at the gym and would like to have but I would be more willing to sacrifice for space considerations such as the single joint isolation machines for biceps, triceps, lateral deltoids, hip adductors, and hip abductors. How about a truly “ultimate” gym plan that attempts to maximize the workout experience in 400 square feet even if it costs more than $100,000. Could I replicate all the movements I would do in a fully equipped commercial gym without sacrificing the comfort and convenience of having thousands of feet for all the machines? I’ve seen power racks (Force USA Monster G12 for example) with a lat pull-down on one upright, a seated cable row on the other upright and both have their pulleys on trolleys that can slide up and down the uprights like a dual cable crossover. Each pulley connects to a selectorized weight stack that is also connected to a counter weighted smith machine in the middle of the rack. The smith machine has a foot plate attachment to turn it into a vertical leg press. So, that machine lacks essentials like leg curl, belt squat, and reverse back hyper but it’s close. Maybe they just need to make a few more attachments.
@michaelrabich9635

If you use all those machines that you mentioned , than home gym is not for, you better off at commercial gym. If anything he put too much unnecessary stuff like both ghr and hypers.

Pretty poor review. You give no explanation on depth of the rack whether it's a bolt down or flat foot version, the R-3 only comes in 24inch or 30inch. This is the biggest piece the home gym will rotate around . And the review gets worse from there. It "feels" like the reviewer has almost no time under any type of heavy weights and no experience actually lifting.

I don't get the recommendations you ALWAYS here people on youtube make of sticking to craigslist for weight plates.... and for other equipment for that matter. I live in the Chicago area..... a MASSIVE area in which you'd think there would be AMPLE selection of weight plates and other fitness equipment and that great, if not insane deals could be had with relative ease. WRONG. Either no one in the Chicagoland area works out, or they just hold onto all of their equipment, or they are the most knowledgeable resellers in the country, because a good deal in my experience can NEVER be found. First off, there's really not that much os a selection on craigslist. The shit I find on there is rinky dink BS I'd never buy brand new let alone used. And even that shit is priced at a level I wouldn't term "good deal." The MAJORITY of equipment I find on craigslist though is from actual stores.... selling either used or A LOT of it is brand new shit. ALL of it is marked at typical store-like prices if not MSRP for the new stuff. And I am going to say about 60-70% of the results I get for the chicago area are from these sellers - actual businesses. Like northern Illinois and Indiana has a place called "2nd Wind Fitness" in which they say they sell used equipment but a majority of it is brand new HOIST equipment to be exact, and HOIST is hardly a "budget" brand. The used stuff they sell it's priced at levels where you might as well just save up an addition $100-200 and buy brand new IMO. And their used selection is TINY. Anyways, back to Craigslist. The used equipment you actually do find on there from private, individual sellers is usually at a logical asking price, meaning you're not getting a really good deal or at least not at the levels people hype up about it. Most of the shit I see is marked down at about a 20-25% discount. Not bad, but you could just wait until a manufacturer runs a sale or when they have their black friday deals and buy brand new equipment at the same price essentially. EliteFTS (a company I'm not too keen on after reading some not so favorable reviews of some of their products and complete shit customer service.... but....) has sales all the time and their black friday deals are considerably better than Rogue's..... if you're willing to buy from EliteFTS - a company I'm on the fence about but really want to love. And then as far as weight plates go..... forget about it. IMO craigslist is a complete waste of time for searching for weight plates. First off NO ONE sells a decent amount of 45lb plates. Almost always they are selling their weight plate sets and these are the person's first set more than likely so what you get is 1 set of 45s, 35s, 25s, etc. All you need is 1 set of 35 lb plates and below.... and honestly, IMO 35 lb plates are redundant (just use a 25 and a 10). So not only are you likely going to have to buy a 35 lb set you don't need, you're going to likely have to buy a TON of 35lbers and under just to build up your 45 lb plate collection, because almost all the people selling plates are selling them in a package deal. Usually for a solid $.70/pound..... but then they'll put something like "if you want to only buy some of the weights it will be $.90/lb if not $1/lb." At those prices of 90 cents or a dollar per pound you might as well buy brand new standard weight plates. Even Rogue sells their Rogue branded standard weight plates at about an average of $1.10-1.20 per lb if you buy a complete set of, say, 600-700 lbs. So again, you might as well just save up to get the new shit. MOST sellers of weight plates I find on craigslist though mark their "deal" at about $1/pound..... regardless. That's like MSRP prices. You can probably get Fitness GEar plates at Dicks Sporting Goods for the price you typically see people selling their stuff for on craigslist. The other problem with craigslist is people are seemingly compelte dumbasses when it comes to trying to sell stuff and marketing the the stuff they want to sell to make it look more attractive to buyers. And pretty much by this all I mean is..... people are fucking retards when it comes to taking pictures of shit they want to sell on Craigslist. I'd say about 50% of the stuff you'll see of equipment will only have 1 or at most 2 pictures of the equipment and it will likely be horribly framed pictures and I guarantee it that it will be in complete shit for lighting so you can barely even see what they're selling. It apparently doesn't dawn on sellers to actually light the room they're taking pictures in, and actually get multiple, well framed shots of their equipment. Point on selling stuff on Craigslist in a quick manner is to provide as many shots as possible of the stuff your selling, at the best camera angles, in VERY well lit conditions. I've sold stuff on Craigslist before and I usually get it sold in about 2 days. Why? Because I provide a MINIMUM of 6 pictures of the stuff I'm selling at multiple angles and making sure I get all the details. As if the person looking online is in my house looking at the product themselves. I mean does it kill people if they take 6+ pictures or to just flip the light switch? On craigslist.... apparently. the OTHER problem with craigslist is that people who sell their stuff don't know how to label it properly. So it's a guessing game on what to search for in the search bar. "Power Racks" almost returns nothing. Other very hit an miss searches; Squat stands, free weights, even Olympic weights (weight plates is the best I've found out), strength equipment, upon many other what you'd think are logical searches usually return very little if anything at all. You likely have to search for "Gym Equipment" in general but then have to sift through the hundreds upon hundreds of treadmills and elliptical machines people are trying to sell, haha. It's just a headache. Bottom line, from my personal experience using craigslist for strength equipment EVEN being in the Chicago area - is fruitless. The shit you do manage to find that you do want to buy is usually coupled with an asking price that you might as well just save up a bit more and buy the thing brand new. These "great deals" on fitness equipment on craigslist is a myth to me because I have yet to find that "out of this world" deal people keep hyping up craigslist to always have. If I were to buy anything used I think I'd recommend using facebook's marketplace (or whatever they call it). I've found more shit I'd actually want there.... but it's still at prices I'd just rather save up an additional $100 and buy brand new instead. I watch Maxx Chewning on youtube and for his gym him and his co-owner friend found a deal on a commercial grade leg press machine for $25...... TWENTY FIVE BUCKS!!!!!! Even if I didn't want a leg press machine, which I don't, I'd buy that. I NEVER find deals like that on Craigslist.... not even close. To me a "deal" on craigslist has to be at least 50% off. Otherwise you're just buying used equipment at what companies sell brand new equipment on a sale for. So for weight plates they'd have to be priced at MOST at $0.70/lb regardless if you buy their set or have them break it up..... because all I want are 45 lb weight plates. I think that's all anyone really wants. Craigslist sellers know this which is why they mark up their prices if you ask them to split it up....... It's just a waste of time.
