Hi Everyone..it's been brought to my attention the Fairy Skin Set is either no longer available or tough to find. No worries, the guide was never meant to be a fairy paint tutorial. Only a few basic colors were used which can be found anywhere, either by Vallejo or your favorite brand. Please adjust your colors depending on your project/character. The concept still applies for the step by step guide outlined below. However if you're looking for the colors from this video. It's a basic light flesh for the base coat. The highlight is mostly white with a tint of the base color. And the shading is a burnt red/brown. 👍 Step by step guide.. 1. Find a base color that matches your characters skin tone color. 2. Add a little white to the base color and use that as the first round of highlights. 3. For shading find a darker color than your base and add a reddish tint (the burnt flesh I was using is basically a reddish brown). 4. Go back and hit the highlights again this time brighter, with mostly white (little to none base color added) 5. You can finish here by misting over everything lightly with the base color to tie in all of the shading. OR add realistic effects in step 6 and 7. 6. Clear coat everything. Add your yellow, blue and red wash. 7. Add a stipple effect for creating pores/birth marks using a color slightly darker than the base color. 8. If you didn't stop at step 5. Now finish everything by lightly misting over the base color to blend everything together. That's basically the guide written out for anyone that needs the info for other styles of skin tones. Also you can play around with the steps depending on the look you're going for. Hope that helps. 👍

Inspirational eye opening vid and you really earned my respect. I've never painted anything at remotely that scale, I'm a mini painter mostly painting for tabletop games. The airbrushing seemed entirely what I'm used to tho, building up the layered skin. Then you broke out the washes - or at least what you meant by wash which isn't the same at all. I was so utterly sceptical but boy does it look like a sophisticated representation of the underskin structures showing through, masterful. Then the speckling left her looking so real, for male skin you could leave it right there and be awesome. For her the softening extra soft layer is so scalable it's frankly amazing. I'd have had to keep it more real and not so comic book because man did it look so real. IF only I could represent this on a 32mm mini lol It will make enormous difference to monstrously large models though and especially wing membranes - plus I may have to find a very large scale statuette/diorama to paint anyway Subscribed just to see you do it again sometime

@itsallthingsart6 ай бұрын
Sorry about that, I may have forgotten to add that to the video. I was using Krylon Flat in between steps. And then for the final finish it was a combination of Krylon Flat as a heavy coat/paint protectant. And then misted with Krylon Satin for a slightly semi gloss finish in some areas. I find the mixture of Flat and Satin works best as Satin by itself is sometimes too shiny and Flat would just make everything dull. The mixture of the two gives a nice realistic appearance to the skin. I'll be covering it in the next video of the complete Before and After paint job of this project.

Could you add a little detail as to why you varnish before the wash?
@itsallthingsartКүн бұрын
Protects the base coat color. It also helps the wash move around more freely and not stain the base coat. Without clear coat you're staining the actual paint underneath. With clear coat you're applying the wash more freely so it's not altering the colors too much. This shows the difference of what a wash does with and without clear coat. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHWciJR9ed-ZpZYsi=2cmCAycIMM_T4Dek

Was a bit distraught at first at how long the video was but you did a great job throughout of explaining what you were thinking and how you were going about the process. Bravo! I do however, wish you would have finished through on the misting at the end. The cut from you misting to the finished product looks like a completely different skin tone to the hour of video we watched. So much detail and explaining just to fall short on an important part of the process. I bring this up only because I’m a visual learner and I think it may have served some to see you explain it the same way you did all the other steps. Nevertheless, great video. Earned my sub.

I try my best to film everything but yes sometimes parts are edited out due to the length of the video or just so I can see what I'm doing without a camera in the way. But from what I remember I did a few more layers to cover everything back up. Lightly misting over the base coat and lightly adding back some shadows and highlights. It's the same technique I do in all my videos so if it wasn't shown in this one it'll be shown in another. Thanks for watching and the feedback 👍🏼 I'll try my best to keep everything recorded next time.

Love it ❤ when you say lightly mist the entire model .. is that airbrushing with a lot of water / thinner, like a wash ? Or just regularly mixed paint ? I always worry that I’ll just go over everything I did ( like basing a model ) 🙃
@itsallthingsart6 ай бұрын
Yes, you can go about it both ways depending on how much you want to cover up the previous steps and the technique. For the technique make sure you're far back from the model so it's not being fully saturated by the paint. And yes thin it down more than normal, just not too much that the mix becomes runny. Depending on your brand of paint you could also add a clear/transparent medium to reduce the pigment of the paint. With Vallejo I'll use Golden High Flow or Vallejo Clear Base. There are different ways to reduce the saturation of the paint when spraying so just go with what you're more comfortable with.. whether it's thinning and spraying from further away or adding mediums. Thanks for watching 😎👍

do you use a glossy or matte (maybe satin) type of clearcoat to seal?
@itsallthingsart4 ай бұрын
It's covered in the next "final reveal" video of the project. But for any steps in between paint I use a flat. For the final finish I use a few coats flat, so it picks up a little sheen.. and then I also mist the skin with just a little Satin. So basically the flat seals/protects the paint. And the Satin gives the desired effect. I find Satin by itself comes out too plasticky looking. I'll actually have an entire video on clear coats coming out very soon 👍🏼

If you find yourself using words like“like I said“ it’s a flag for you to edit it as unnecessary. Your channel is way more successful than mine by far. But one thing I’ve learned as a content creator is that I tend to do the same thing myself. I repeat myself and I overexplain. Got yourself an amazing platform here concept. Just a minor suggestion during your editing pay attention to something that you’ve already said once and do your best to either not again, or edit it out. Keep killing it

Do you use flat clear or gloss clear as your protection.
@itsallthingsart6 ай бұрын
Depends on the project.. but for skin tones I do a combination of flat and satin. First a heavy coat of flat to protect the paint, and then a very light mist of satin to give the skin some shine. I find if using just satin by itself, it goes on too glossy and makes the skin look plastic. And just flat by itself will make the skin caked up and unrealistic. So a mixture of the two works best to give the skin a slight oily/lifelike appearance. But that's just my experience.. it really depends on the brand of finish. I like to work with Krylon and those are my results. Thanks for the question. I meant to discuss the final finish with a slight satin in the video but I may have forgotten. If you're just spraying a finish in between steps to save your progress, then Flat or Matte would be best.

When shading, besides further thing my paints. Should i lower my psi, if so by how much?
@itsallthingsart6 ай бұрын
It's going to depend on your mix ratio for paint/thinner. I stick to the normal rule of thinning to a milky consistency and run my psi always around 15-20. The only time I go higher, to around 40 psi is if I'm spraying primer. And sometimes if it's a very small detailed area such as a face, yes I lower to maybe 10-15. You don't want to go too low as you'll have more of a dotted spray pattern. I mostly rely on trigger control for not letting out too much paint. But yes you can lower the psi for shading and highlights.

Really all skin follows the same principal, start with a magenta undertone that represents the blood vessels below the skin then go over those with various shades of skin tones that get progressively lighter and with steeper angles of spray to represent where the light is hitting it. You can apply this across multiple paint lines, mix and match lines and also apply it to different skin colorations from dark to pale.

They come with different ranges of skin tones for light, medium, dark as well as more specific sets for reder skin, or fantasy characters for example. All other steps from the video would still apply. You're basically trying to create the layer of flesh under the skin, by adding veins, muscle tissue, pores and so on.. which then gets covered up again at the end with a light spray of the base color.. which acts as your top layer of skin in real life. Look at anatomy diagrams with muscle tissue examples, it'll help you understand what's happening beneath the skin.. if you're trying to achieve a realistic effect. If you're just going for a simple skin tone.. then just follow the guide with applying highlights and shadows.. and adjust your base color to whatever color fits your character/model.

@@itsallthingsart Hello, thank you very much for your answer, I will not lie that I understood everything from your answer, there are certain thoughts about painting, but I am not sure if they are right or not. I think I will watch your video more than once and finally understand what I want and how to get it. Many thanks to you for helping people with your videos, advice and recommendations. Thank you very much

The base coat is a flesh coat primer by Stynlerez. The rest of the set is by Vallejo. But you can use any skin color combination (base, shadows, highlights) of your liking depending on which brand you prefer to use and how it applies to your character/project. Personally I like using Vallejo paint.
