Lard slices are popular in Slovenia. More otside Ljubljana then in it. They come in many forms. Most popular is the one coated with paprika on the sides. And yes...it must be served cold.

Most restaurants in Ljubljana are trap for turists. Of course you have found some traditional dishes, but in their comercial variants. Most of really good and original dishes you have to find around Slovenia, nostly not in bigger towns. You will find a real amazing dishes for more cheaper price. Eastern Slpvenia, Karst and inland south Slovenia have more to offer than Ljubljana. I was born in Ljubljana and I have lived most of my lifetime in Ljubljana, so I can say a lot about food in Slovenia. Prekmurska gibanica, Bograč and Bujta repa are the best in Prekmurja region - north east of Slovenia. In east Štajerska (also in Prekmurje) you can find the best Meso iz Tunke, Štajerska gibanica and Sirove gibonce. Mybe you will find also Mlečne murke s krompirjem. Also Gobova obara z ajdovimi žganci, Polnjena svinjska rebra and Telečja pećenka. The best Pršut you can find on Karst plato (near border with Italy) with nice wine Teran. In upper Savinjska dolina and Notranjska you can find Savinjski and Notranjski želodec. It is salami, but unique with different shape and in urinal bladder. Of course bladder is cleaned before filled with meat. In Gorenjska region you can find also their type of this salalami, but filled also with porridge. So maybe you would find next time some native people around Slovenia, who should show you where and what our country could offer to You. At last I have not listed all of traditional dishes from Slovenia. I have written original names, which you can copy/paste to the Google. In manny Yt vids I have seen a lot of commentar about how tasty our food is. But for us those dishes are of low quality. Better dishes you would find and taste all around Slovenia in local reastaurants.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! We appreciate your insight into the broader Slovenian food scene. You're absolutely right that Ljubljana can sometimes cater more to tourists, and we’re always keen to explore more authentic regional dishes. We definitely want to explore more of Slovenia and will keep your suggestions in mind for our future travels through Slovenia. Exploring lesser-known places and connecting with locals is our preferred way to travel, it was just unfortunate that we didn't have much time to spend in Slovenia (we were at the end of our 3 month visa). We’ll be sure to try these dishes next time, and we’re grateful for your detailed recommendations!

As a slovenian I see that most of "food tourists" visits ljubljana city centre along river and bled. That's quite a mistake, because as far as I saw it's most tourist traps. It's nice place to visit for sure, but if you want to taste some real food you need to go outside tourist areas.

@@BucketListTravellers I'm a simple guy and a lot of places in the old town are, let's be honest, a bit of tourist traps. As I have not really left my home in the past few years, I don't really know what's still open, but one place I would definitely recommend is "Gostina pod Rožnikom" which, while probably comparable to old town, actually delivers super well. :) As for dishes ... depends really on what kind of food you're into. They offer a lot of traditional dishes and a lot of worldwide selection. The staff there are friendly and won't bite if you ask. :)

@@Saavik256 Yes we agree that there are a few tourist traps in the old town. We did however enjoy the places we went to and thought that the pricing was reasonable, especially the Michelin rated restaurants. Thanks for the suggestion. We loved Ljubljana and will definitely visit again.
