Full breakdown and review of my current "ultimate" survival knife, the Stygian by Hydra Knives. It's lived up to its name, taking a level of abuse and use that none of my other blades can handle without damage.

I got my first Kukri when I was 10. It had a 7" blade and seemed like it was giant to me. As I grew up the Khukuri (sp for those who know) grew with me, and after 15 years in the US Mil and another 16 in the IC (operating mainly in Sub-Sahara Africa, Latin America and, horrors of horrors, Washington DC), and through several variants (including the Blackjack Mamba (prove me wrong)) the Kuk has proven itself in everything I ever asked it to do and it will be my go to / do all knife until the end

If I remember correctly, Stygia is also where the Greek Gods defeated the Titans. Pretty cool knife and I really dig the use of Greek mythology by Hydra Blades. Hail Hydra✋

I love Nc690Co steel, probably one of the best stainless steels for a knife. That said, over the years as much as I love my various blades my primary go to designs are khukuri or tanto for most situations and right now it is a khukuri that is close by my side.

No reason indeed, the ESEE 6 is a great blade...iirc it has the bowdrill indent in the handle? If so have you ever tried it?
@wilcoxtactical3716
@wilcoxtactical3716 3 жыл бұрын
@@TheSurvivalOutpost my Esee 6 doesn't have the bow drill hole but my Esee 5 does. I've tried it a few times but wasn't especially effective for me. Could have been the wood or other variables preventing me from getting an ember, no fault of the knife. I carry a fero rod and a waterproof lighter when I hike / camp and both, at least for me, are more practical ways to make fire.

No doubt a good survival knife. However I'm a bit sceptical about 3 things. First, the deep grooves of the handle. Second, the hollow grind doesn't really fade in the scandi grind. That step, from one grind to the other, above the continous edge, probably stucks the blade at certain tasks, where pulling the whole length of it, is needed. Third, is the European prices of this thing. No less than 220euros ($250), anywhere. Not even in Spain. That's too much, for what it is.
@TheSurvivalOutpost
@TheSurvivalOutpost 3 жыл бұрын
The only complaint I have so far with this blade is the handle design which tilts my grip a little too far forward. Aside from that I haven't had those issues you mentioned. I do agree it is pricey but still on pair with other top American brands such as Tops Knives. Currently this blade is on sale for $205 thesurvivaloutpost.com/collections/edged-weapons/products/stygian-survival-knife

@@TheSurvivalOutpost I see. Yes sometimes looking at it and actually using the thing, is very different. Good to know. I still have my reservations about price, though. Jeo-Tec, Cudeman, Miguel Nieto or Joker, J&V, all from Spain, have equally good blades in N690, for much less. In fact, the most expensive from them, are 40-50 euros, less than this. Let alone Lionsteels, Fox from Italy, TFK from Bulgaria, ANV and Black Knives BSK from the Czech Rep, Kornalski from Poland or Kizlyar Supreme and NC Custom from Russia.

Good honest vid Blitz I like what you showed, but I've been using a western Skinner since I was in the service along with a good pocket knife. I'm more worried about getting home 25 miles in a semi-rural/rural area then heavy bush craft. Plus both work well for SD. Prep On T

First i want to say i like about you and your content . There is no bs from you your straight forward and skills to back it up . Survival knife to me is a tool that gets you home . Some times that might take two knifes to get it done . The knife your showing has two bevels so thats a plus for function can be interesting for sharpening because you have to stop then move to next bevel but its on one knife not two . Length is good .again you are correct most of the time a survival knife is the knife you have one you . I like the orange handle spacer to have a identifier . Someone mention the tom brown tracker that is a no for me but thats for another day’s discussion . Man this is a tough one there are so many knifes and i love them all . Lol either the usgi machete or the Russian expedition knife is a solid performer

Nice knife, but is it $260 nice? There are much more affordable knives out there. You make it sound like a really good knife. I now want one. But why this one over the many comparable knives out there for a much more affordable prices?

It is on sale for $205 and once you use the 20% off discount code, you are well under the $200 price point. Is the best knife in that price range? Not sure I haven't worked with many of the other blades but...in my experence for now, this my ultimate survival knife :)
