In Karate, the yells during strike attacks hold 3 purposes: 1) rev yourself up for contact 2) expel air from your lungs so a counter strike can’t “knock the wind out of you”. 3) force a pattern of breathing to keep a steady stream of oxygen happening. A lot of people forget to breath steadily during a fight, which hurts endurance.

you forgot - 4) striking on exhale allows to transfer more power in to the strike:) and what is a yell if not a loud exhale?)

@vezokpiraka18 күн бұрын
Additionally, there are psychological factors at play. Striking someone while yelling is intimidating and might either make the opponent not pay attention or consider himself more hurt. Honestly it's just good practice to yell on strikes, but it's important to do it right. It's a guttural yell that expels air from your body, not a high pierced shriek.

@@vezokpiraka consider himself more hurt? Wtf 😅
@ardynizunia970918 күн бұрын
Or, and hear me out on this, just EXHALE WITHOUT YELLING LMAO. Seriously, the yelling gives no advantage. In fact, I would argue you're letting the air out in an uncontrolled manner and not using the force you could be using. I used to do kickboxing and a strong exhale to maximize power does not include a wide open mouth. Usually you exhale with the mouth opened just a bit to have a constant, very strong exhale throughout the entire movement. By yelling you are literally not getting that air out efficiently and if you need to shout to rev yourself up you are a terrible fighter anyways. Seriously, if you need to scream to get yourself ready to hit someone, you are probably a middle schooler that hasn't really fought before. So yeah, all advantages you mentioned do NOT require the screaming part. Just the breathing part. And the breathing part can be done MUCH better than with a wide open mouth you'd have while yelling. The yelling is a pointless, showmanshiplike tradition. A useless tradition, which is very common in maaaaany asian martial arts. While I don't think Karate is among the fake, useless martial arts, like aikido or wing chun, karate has useless elements that are only kept for tradition. The most obvious one being the drawn back fist at your hip. You know why they call an overly wound up hit a sucker punch? It's not something cool like people seem to think. The term originated from fighters calling you a sucker if you punched like that because the punch is telegraphed so much that they can easily dodge it every single time. Same for the karate hip loaded punches. It is a stupid stance that offers stronger hits which will never hit a competent opponent, thus making the marginal power difference irrelevant. And also it sacrifices a LOT of defensive advantages you get from having both hands raised in front of you. It's just stupid. TLDR: The yells are useless, learning proper breathing is pretty easy and doesn't require any yelling. Karate has some terribly useless traditions. Don't try to justify them. If you TRULY loved an art, you would want to improve on it and make it the best it could be instead of hanging on to tradition and letting it stay mediocre.

Regarding fencing, there’s 3 different weapons(sabre, épée, foil), and idk about sabre, but as someone who does épée, you are generally trained to parry and avoid doubles, but they score double-hits for both players, as the sword the épée was the training for was a less-lethal dueling sword. In sabre(and foil) they have right-of-way, which is meant to discourage doubles by transferring right of way from the attacker to the defender if they parry successfully, making it so that if both were to start going toward each other, the person who moves second needs to actually defend themselves to get the point. But, this also has the possible adverse effect of both fencers charging at each other to get right of way. In short, in the clips you show, it isn’t fencing per se itself that is causing this, but the players themselves acting in a way that isn’t orthodox with how fencing is taught.

Scoring system tries to discourage being suicidal. Tho its kinda hard anyway when its sport and you are using sporting sabre which is insanely light (thats why in MCF we only use sporting sabres for training purposes, but proper dueling sabres for competition). The only time someone shouted was when we took part in all styles full contact nationals, they were trying to intimidate someone while charging and shouting and the opponent knocked them over after sidestepping.

Nah I fully agree with Shad. Olympic fencing has near nothing resembling actual sword play. Look at older clips of Olympic fencing where there was actual back and forth. Versus now where it's all in the lunge and whoever touches first. It is fencing in name only. Now, were it to be judged more like aerobics where there's style points, and a little bit of boxing where you get points for contact or controlling the engagement area. That could lead to some amazing sword play. Not necessarily realistic perhaps. But much better than spring-stab where the fastest wins.
@Riceball0116 күн бұрын
It depends a lot on the weapon being used. There's a lot more back & forth with epee because the entire body from the top of the head to the bottom of the foot is a target and the first to hit gets the point. In foil & sabre your target area is much more limited; for foil it's just the front of the upper torso, and with sabre it's from the hip bones up (front & back) including the head. What makes foil & particularly sabre fencers do these crazy looking charges at each other is the right of way rule. Whoever initiates their attack first gets the right away which means that if they land their attack they score the point, even if their opponent hits them first. At each fencer (in foil & sabre) charge at each other almost simultaneously because they're trying to establish their right of wat to the judge.

12:44 as someone who was trained by a national level fencer and her olympic level fencer mother, ive noticed a difference, low level fencing is much more like an actual sword fight where both opponents are cautious, then at national level its a mix of taking your time and striking at the perfect moment, then for olympic level, its just instant go. Aka you lunge at them at hope to got you score the point. Theres lots of defensive maneuvers that they teach however at high levels doing anything but trying to score as soon as the match starts your throwing the match. As someone who trained in actual hema style swordsmanship before stepping into fencing, after you get over the way in which you hold a foil (pistol grip) a lot of what’s different between swordfighting and fencing is blade control, im not talking about controlling your blade, im saying you’re constantly wanting to be controlling your opponents blade with yours to try to create a direct line between the tip of your blade and they’re chest. My win loss ratio against the national level fencer was around 10-40 in her favour (we dated so we fenced a lot) and for her olympic level mother my recored was 1-3 in her favour. The last time i fenced her i realized she didnt give me time to strategize so i just relied on side stepping and trusting to avoid her blade and land my own stab. That does not work against a national level fencer because they will still take the time to see what you’re doing. All in all it’s easier to score points on a olympic level fencer than a national level one. In my experience.

I was told by a couple shaolin kempo blackbelts that the purpose of the yelling was to force you to breathe before striking. That exerting the yelling causes you to subconsciously tense your lower body toward the target and ground your strike. So that you are pushing your leg into the ground in the direction of your target and stabilize your body. They were instructed to vocalize yelling during practice.

Olympic fencing is incredibly fast and has rather complicated "right of way" rules, so the all the shouting and jumping about in celebration is an attempt on the part of the fencer to convince the judge that their touch is valid and the other guy's is not. The main purpose of the shout when striking is that it trains you to tighten your core to support the strike. A short, forceful exhale does the same thing but is harder to teach newcomers. In training, it also helps accustom people to volume and violence being connected. However, it should never be long or drawn-out, nor excessively loud; it should be a short, controlled shout in the center of your vocal range and without straining for the sound itself. Otherwise you turn into a modern tennis player.

Your videos are hitting hard on my recommendations again since I've been looking at KCD 2 content. It comes out next month.

One side was part of a hookah, but the other was the end of a mobility cane.

When I was in tae kwon do, my instructor said the only time to yell was at the moment of impact. The reason was that this minutely changed the stacking of your body and improved your momentary lock-out of the strike, which improved power delivery. Gross over-simplification, but I agree with your comment that in that video it was mostly to hype himself up and try to look intimidating.

4:30 The biggest benefit to shouting when you strike is that it forces you to breathe. You'd be amazed how many fights last less than 3 minutes because the adrenaline rush makes someone forget to breathe.

I did a bit of Olympic fencing followed by a bit of SCA Rapier. I only did about 6 months of each, so my expertise is limited, but I came away with a few interesting observations: 1) A disengage during a thrust was not common in my SCA group, so I was often able to land those on the less experienced members despite it being a really basic Olympic technique. When they tried to use it against me it was already second nature to counter the disengage, so it was kind of like my secret weapon. Until... 2) The more experienced members did not use an Olympic-style counter, but could defeat the disengage regardless, all while keeping their point on the opponent, which meant my disengage would not only fail but cause me to impale myself. 3) Against the more experienced members I would often parry a thrust and move to riposte, only to have them lay a draw cut across my jugular because I didn't do anything about that blade that just missed me. Olympic right-of-way rules got me killed a lot. Edited to add: My Olympic experience was in foil.

I have heard that yelling in martial arts gives about 20% more strength to punch and kicks.
