English stock, 28 gauge, over-under. But mine is the Ruger Red label. Purchased the 1st year Ruger made it available. Grouse, Doodles and even Pheasants. If you ever find one at a gun shop, don't hesitate to bring it home.

My 12 has great triggers but it's heavy for mountain hunting, especially after I put lead in the butt to balance it on the action instead of in front of the pin. I wanted a 20 but this one came up, still kinda regret not waiting it out. But on the other hand I did get to hunt through the shortages, I could find ammo.

The part where Steve trims the trees made me laugh. Upland purists dont read this, but I use my Beretta Extrema2 12 gauge and last season I did exactly that. Shot at a grouse, 2 shots, marked the spot where he fell and next thing I knew a small tree was falling on me! Great to get some advice and info from experienced grouse hunters.

SxS, always go with double triggers. Instant choice of choke is so valuable.
@jasonsfishingagain312Ай бұрын
Right from the start, I'd take an over and under, rubber butt pad because in my world my guns spend a lot of time leaning on stuff and you lost me at 30 inch barrels. 24 or 26 at most catch less on swings.
@sawyerplume3321Ай бұрын
30 in Barrels?! That’s crazy to me in the Grouse woods! I will be getting a 20 or 28 sxs to hunt over my English pointer next year.
@mrsmartypants_1Ай бұрын
That surprises me also. I have a specialized English stock grouse gun - a Browning BPS 20-gauge pump with 22” barrels 🤣. Have had it since I was a teenager and it is fantastic especially in thick young aspen stands.
@sawyerplume3321Ай бұрын
@ I hunt with an old BPS 20 myself. Upland Daze on here and you can see how poor I shoot it lol
@mrsmartypants_1Ай бұрын
@@sawyerplume3321 Ha ha. Nice. I’m an average shot. At best. Right handed. Left eye dominant. I have a couple very fine O/U expensive shotguns I’ve used for a couple decades. I recently dug out my Remington 870 Wingmaster 12-gauge pump 28” barrel and I’ve significantly increased my kill ratio on pheasants. And I’m having more fun with it. Go figure.
@jordan106-o5eАй бұрын
Maybe Ben’s for practicality but both are amazing. Great video. I agree with Ben's analysis that the biggest thing is sight picture (once you get used to double trigger). I still find i'm slightly more consistent with over/under and single barrel guns. I like the prince of wales grip as a compromise between the extremes of grips.

Absolutely the SxS. With the straight stock and splinter fore end. That gun is built for point and shoot instinctive shooting. The OU is a great clay gun, but sight picture isn’t as good as a SxS.

Woodcock, definitely a British SxS. Grouse, is generally a 32 S&W long pistol! lol 👍🏼 Both those guns were very nice for a semi affordable new gun. So many amazing old 26” British box locks that are practically giving away however so I gotta go with the classics. Beautiful old used guns don’t pay the bills however so you guys did great! 👍🏼

Side by side gives me the fizz, however I prefer a classic sidelock as opposed to the boxlock. Ejectors add joy to the whole experience as long as I have one of my Sons along to pick up the shells for me…if not, extractors are just fine. There is nothing quite like an English shotgun. Cheers.

Side by sides for life. Still have my first side by side that patterns great with all my buckshot, buck n ball, ball & upland handloads. Its my go to hunt gun for deer, hog & upland and had killed more animals than any of my other shotguns I own. Its a Stevens 311 Series H that was originally my moms from the lates 70s. A few years ago I got it from my Uncle & since I was doing Gunsmithing classes with AGI and was apprenticing with a gunsmith here it became my project gun and man I brought that thing back to life from polish chamber and bore, re facing, refinishing the bluing and oldschool month long BLO handrubbed application. Only thing I do need make is a new forend. My uncle pulled the ole bubba and fucking dremeled the wood where the shoe fits so its a little wobbly but hey, it still fits and shoots.

So after the fashion show is over… the only question that is at all relevant is which gun looks better after you’ve dropped it a few dozen times scrambling over slash in the other North Woods in ME…. Also, after everyone is done dorking out over case colors and engraving, a fine auto loader in 20 or, my fav, 16 (the old school ideal gauge) is hard to beat. Go put your hands on a new Browning A5 in 16 at 5lbs12oz, appreciate the third follow up shot (run it heavy in a #6) and come back and tell me I’m wrong.

Nah, the ultimate upland hunting shotgun is something that's practical for clays and all forms of hunting and home defense. That's a pump or semi auto. I prefer the 1100 or the 870. The Ithaca 31 or Winchester Model 12 or Mossberg 500 are solid choices, but there's many others. The double is classic but only for clays and upland.
