This is so awesome. I have a couple of friends who lived in Korea who said it was SUPER unvegan. In China I found it was fairly easy to find vegan street food, but not always possible. In Japan, where I live now, at festivals and such it's not TOO hard to find SOMETHING, but not often this many options.
@laksh_123453 жыл бұрын
Is it so? I always thought that it'd be harder to find vegan food in Japan rather than Korea. I didn't know it was the other way around.
@DakotaAbroad3 жыл бұрын
@@laksh_12345 Well, it seems I was lucky with the first few festivals I went to! After the first year all the vendors had different flavors of fries that all had dairy in them for example, where the year before there were some that were fine. There were still things like candied fruits and such, but the festivals my second go around had a LOT less options. Almost nothing.

For me one of the most challenging vegan obstacles in Korea is fish. It’s hard to tell sometimes whether or not some savory foods were made with fish sauce, fish stock, shrimp jeot, fish-flavored soy sauce, etc… it hides in a lot of foods!

I think vegetarians have it a little easier than vegans because we're okay with diary and some are okay with eggs as well......so we'd be able to adjust. The problem is that because Korean cuisine relies heavily on non vegetarian products, a lot of seemingly vegetarian or even vegan dishes might have animal products in them - fish sauce being the most widely used. This video is so so so so helpful because it really is reassuring to know that vegan friendly food can be found and enjoyed just as much in Korea!♥️

I thought being vegan in Korea would be so difficult because that's what I've heard akdjaja now I'm excited to go when I'm older and hopefully there'll even be MORE vegan options then :D
@ryanmgkim3 жыл бұрын
it's easier to be vegan in korea than anywhere else in my opinion. our food is mostly plant-based and we need to dispel the idea that it's all korean bbq. meat wasn't even a staple part of our diet until after the 80's. and the food is actually delicious. I don't understand how white people can be vegan lol their food is trash
@PumpkinMozie3 жыл бұрын
@@ryanmgkim it really depends on your circumstances. If you’re eating homemade food all the time it’s somewhat easy to keep your diet vegan here but if you’re a student/tourist it’s extremely challenging because most 외식 foods have some form of animal derivative in them. Being vegan isn’t just about taking out the meat you know. Eggs and seafood count too which is tough because both are staples in Korean food (not to mention dairy too, although that’s usually easy to avoid here). As a vegan, you can’t even eat kimchi at most restaurants because most people make it with 새우젓 or 멸치액. I would say that Korea is pretty challenging for vegans because not only are there a lot of sneaky, easy-to-miss animal products, but also there isn’t much variety in non-animal protein sources. It’s either plain beans (types of beans sold here are also very limited compared to other countries and freaking expensive) or tofu for the most part which could get really boring for a lot of people. And that’s not even mentioning the social implications of being vegan! Basically unless your whole family/friend group is also vegan (extremely unlikely) you’re going to be put in sooo many awkward situations since Korea has so much shared-meal culture. In other countries it’s easy to just order your own meal at a restaurant but you usually can’t do that here.
@Medha_032 жыл бұрын
@@PumpkinMozie I understood that very easily. I think one has to keep fresh fruits with him to avoid getting in difficult situations plus there are many Indian restaurants where vegan + vegetarian food is available .
