My favorite improvement for sound proofing is to fill double-glazing window vents with expanding foam. It really works. Some air vents are like open windows even when shut. It was the only option for me and it really helped. I tried other things like stuffing them with draught excluder, which is more easily removable, but it wasn't as good.

What about impact noise from next door neighbours walking around. I hear footsteps throughout my house. I don't hear airborne noise.

Landlords are filthy hypocrites. Critical tenants cost money. In principle, no sound should come through.. 0.0 In the past, soft floor coverings were mandatory. All laminate and hard floors create noise. Should be banned worldwide in apartments, flats, upstairs houses. 90 percent of apartments are noisy and cause nervous breakdowns in people. Serious health problems. That in turn causes aggression, unemployment and healthcare costs. etc. good housing is important. National authorities require homes to be properly insulated.

I have neighbors with noisy trucks, but also my bedroom already has a layer of plywood and a layer of drywall. I’m thinking of adding a layer of 1lb MLV, then 5/8” drywall+ green glue and another layer of drywall. Anyone have any comments?

This guy and his channel have some good recent vids on why not to use green glue. I would check that out.

The townhouse that I own was built in 1972. The cost of someone putting up sound barriers is outrageous. I cannot believe that contractors charge $3000 and I am buying the material.

Can you talk about raised garden beds, wood fences, and other things outside that can help? I've heard it can help but is it really worth the time and money?

thanks for your video! im wondering if blown in insulation on its own would be worth it, given you can’t get to the outlets in the wall since only small holes of drywall are removed. thanks in advance for any input!

Would one layer of MLV over the existing drywall before the layers of 5/8ths and green glue be worth it if you have the extra budget. I ask as our parting wall is a plywood and insulation sandwich with one layer of 5/8ths drywall over it.

I was wondering this too. The little research I did showed that for MLV to be effective, is that it needs to have a little slack in it to help absorb the sound waves. You would need to install furring strips to the existing drywall to mount the MLV to and then add your 5/8 drywall over it.

What about adding 5 layers of dry wall ontop of each other with mass loaded vinyl between each sheet of dry wall?
@soundproofguide

That would be over kill, and heavy to the floor structure beneath. Two layers is sufficient in most cases.

5 layers is 62.5mm. Better to build extra metal studs wall instead of extra plaster sheets

You really betray your audience. A wall, is not the only separation between you and your neighbor. You share a floor and a ceiling! If you don't lay down some rubber matts and wood and carpet you're going to hear and feel all the vibrations. If the ceiling is a little hollow you're going to get sound traveling through there too. So if you're experienced at all in soundproofing you should know this. It's pointless to do only part of the job. That's going to be a huge investment and an almost total loss. Then, if you're willing to go all the way, you'll also need to design an air filtration system that is insulated for sound. This project could easily cost a couple thousand dollars.
