As cool as this product is, it really makes me appreciate having a standalone rig already set up with everything dialed in. I just couldn't see myself put that up or down all the time. For example with musicians, a guitar that is in its case not plugged in ready to go doesn't get played much. Great review btw.

I just received the "Go" unit with wheels. It's a game changer for me. I live in 750 sq ft with my wife and daughter. I was having to lift and move a folding rig from my garage before. As a consequence I wasn't racing much. Now I can keep the rig in my living room and just roll it in front of the tv when I need it. My daughter also likes that she can put her magnets on it. It works well with my gaming chair, but I agree with Will that the pedals could be a little higher. The fact that I have wheels on mine helps though - as it makes the unit taller. Also good catch Will on noticing that you get some heptic feedback through the pedals with the stiffness of the rig. You are right about that, but I didn't notice it until you said it. The only issue I've had is that my gaming chair isn't compatible with the clamp they sell. The brakes on the wheels of my chair are sufficient to hold me in place, but I think having that clamp would help with making the whole rig more stiff. I might get a new chair, just to be compatible with that clamp. For US customers, keep an eye on their website for lower prices. The shipping costs recently came down substantially because they now have a US distributor. This is how I was able to afford it.

You nailed it...... so now I get to keep a sturdy rig hidden right where I need it.

I tried it during the sim expo in Maastricht and was blown away with their unit to use with a desk and the lack of flex on that unit (with the seat catcher) was impressive, the cheaper units was not my thing but for a low powered belt driven base fine. The only downside is the price but for people that need this compact format it’s great.

Great job as always Will. I absolutely love that these exist. Many of us got hooked on games like Gran Turismo and Forza, which inevitably led to all kinds of DIY living room concoctions to hold our wheel and pedals in place. Something like the Coffee Racer would be very attractive to someone taking that first step towards more serious sim-racing. Of course they also provide a great option for those that don't have space (or approval 😜) for a more permanent rig. Obviously there are a lot of compromises versus something like a fixed 8020 setup, but that's not really what these are competing against. Someone looking at this is likely trying to improve on a possibly shaky DIY setup or even a desk setup. Maybe it's even one of these vs no sim-racing at all. I love that this option is available.

I have had the cofee racer play in my living room for about 2 years now. I've only been using it with the G29 so far but I'm upgrading to the DD+ soon. Thankfully the black finish matched our fireplace so it does not stick out as much as I though. Unit is solid as heck and keeps the wife happy. My partner is a very light sleeper so having a full rig in my office was just too loud so this was a compromise (a very expensive one), but it's been great for both of us. In terms of setup time, after having it for a long time now I have a good system in place and markers so I know how to get it exactly how I like it set up every time and it takes roughly a minute.
@ErikBrabander7 ай бұрын
I’ve got the coffee racer play for about 1 month now. It’s awesome 🙌🏻. I use it downstairs in the living room. Set up is about 1 min. Pedals can stay in the position you drive in when you store it. (Fanatec dd pro with std pedals) I got the wheels underneath so I can ride it around the living room. The wheels have brakes and keep the rig in its place (also due to its weight)

if they had one large enough (but still compact) to leave the pedals in a ‘ready to use’ position, and drop the wheel with buffer space to leave the cables in, then I think the setup might be simple enough to make it a little more compelling. I’d probalby want the option of a grommet to feed the cables through to the outside too (I’d have it under a desk so leaving the cables out permanently woudl be fine). And the seat mount could have a seat slider type release to quickly get it into the correct location. Woudl be a great VR setup

I wish I realized this earlier, not ommiting to the wife thing but the updating part. I didn't buy proper speakers and an avr, put that off for years in favor of upgrading my pc. Eventually I bought my speakers, meanwhile I upgraded my pc 4 times since then. Could have enjoyed good sound for more years if I bought them earlier and wouldn't make a difference for me in the pc gaming situation. Stuff like speakers, sim racing rigs and acessories, oled tvs,, projectors, even VR headsets now that we're at that resolution that you won't feel the need to upgrade, are all better luxury purchases value wise than stuff like pcs, phones and consoles imo (unless you need a good pc to work). They are all expensive hobbies, but yea you won't bother upgrading for a good while. while those others are cheaper yes, but if you're upgrading every 2-3 years it adds up.If I could go back I'd prioritize those instead.

Carry everything in front of the TV, Protective floor mat, unfold chair, unfold Wheelbase, screw everything tight, hook PC to TV, plug everything into power and USB. I had this idea several years ago. Started the design phase, but abandoned when we expanded our house and added a small mancave. My thinking was that conceptually its most practical when it's engineered to thr point where it's essentially an entire rig in a box. It would be expensive, but it'd already a super niche market. Specifically for somebody who can justify/afford thr cost of a full rig but space is absolutely off the table. I dont think this is a budget friendly concept. To be so creates A LOT of compromises. Just my 2 cents.

As always, love and appreciate the review. IDK about this one though. One, why the play on stereo types, are they gonna make an overpriced version for woman and call it " Hubby Approved" too? Anyone ( man/woman) who has been in this hobby for any more then 2 to 3 years is either well pass this topic of conversation or they are dating there sim equipment. Most serious sim racers have there equipment in a dedicated space anyway. This is definitely pointed towards new racers but the price is so high that I fear it would scare off anyone thinking of joining in on this hobby. At 4 to 500 dollars of any currency you are already past awesome rig territory so really the fold away cockpits from NLR and Playseat are probably a better buy then this. Final thought though, it is a nice looking coffee table, but over priced by coffee table standards lol
@TheRZBM7 ай бұрын
This looks really well built and engineered but looks like a nightmare to unfold and adjust. I have a £100 folding stand which I just move out of the living room when not in use. That takes me under 5 minutes to move into the room, unfold and adjust and connect up. Even that has put me off sometimes when I have thought about playing and couldn't be arsed to grab the rig. I imagine this would just cause more arguments with the wife as you end up not wanting to pack it away and getting told off for leaving it out instead of packing it back into the £500-£1000 coffee table you convinced her to let you buy.

So why the "Living" and not the "Play"? I don't understand it. What are the advantages of the Living, apart from the wooden top?
@CoffeeRacerUS7 ай бұрын
Check out the model comparison video on our channel for some concise info on the differences between the Living and the Play. The Living is a super nice coffee table. The lid is very high quality and blends into any interior design. It's also very rigid and can handle 12 Nm of wheelbase torque. The Play is designed for an office or gaming room environment because it resembles a file cabinet. It rivals the rigidity of many full rigs and is best for sim racers who want top-of-market wheelbases.
@Longi787 ай бұрын
@@CoffeeRacerUS Thank you very much. Please explain the price difference between the Play and the Living. Is this only because of the wood? @CoffeeRacerUS7 ай бұрын
@@Longi78one of the large differences is due to the lid. It is a really nice piece of furniture. Also, there are laser-cut green powder coated floor boards in the Living. Cool concept, but seems a bit too risky to not have *any* mechanical stop for the folded down position of the wheel base. Can't be too hard to design something that stops the wheelbase resting physically on the pedals? (some pegs on the walls or similar) *edit* I'd also if possible try to design the rig so you dont need to adjust the position of the pedals and wheelbase everytime you unfold the rig. If at all possible, the adjustment for angles etc should be separate and be able to be done once, and then the unfolding procedure of the wheelbase should really just be like a 90 degree flip and then lock it down. Pedals should if possible be similar: do the adjustments once and then optimally shouldnt need any setup _at all_ during unfolding. Second best option would be if a simple "raise it into position" that doesn't need adjusting - just lift/slide (or whatever) and lock with a simple easy to reach mechanism. It would be worth making the table slightly bigger to accomodate this for more setups I think! If it isn't super quick and easy to deploy (and fold back) then it won't be used in my experience. Easier said than done though :)

In most applications, the pedals are able to slide completely forward and completely out of the way of the wheelbase.

Hilariously fiddly and cumbersome. Gaming should be fun and relaxing. Anyone in an office will be using a joypad. Still though, good that this exists at the end of the day but it would turn into a gigantic doorstop/sidetable for most people after a few uses I think.
@CoffeeRacerUS7 ай бұрын
No need to turn it into a doorstop or side table, it's already a coffee table. ☕🏎

Honestly each thing you have to physically do before you start driving can be a demotivator. Im using a wheel stand pro 2.0 but I leave it permanently set up to the side because folding it up is a hassle, and I still need to slide it out managing cabling (with all gear they are quite heavy), line up the chair with castors in the tray. For this coffee table rig, if I had to add the folding out the gear, bolting it all up, difficulties getting in and out then I'd just rather not. Better off finding a space for a rig that makes it easy, jump in and drive.

I think you may cause more damage unplugging the cables and plugging them in over and over. Could you not make a spacer so when you lower the wheel assembly to rest on a stop that way you don't have to unplug the cable's.
@coffeeracer11247 ай бұрын
Most wheelbases do not require unplugging if you put the wheelbase is the most forward postion before folding down, we will put your suggestion on the list for development though! Thanks! :)

How come you didn’t use the racer go on the couch? That one seems to be the best middle of the line and supports high torque, does that one work on the couch too?
@CoffeeRacerUS7 ай бұрын
The Go is limited to 8 Nm maximum wheelbase torque. It can certainly be used on the couch. The Play and the Living are very rigid, even with a lot of torque. The Go is very stable but will flex with higher torque wheelbases.

@@CoffeeRacerUS ok I was referring to the play model then. The all black, 20 nm max. He didn’t use that one on the couch I was just seeing if there was a reason or if they can all be used in that manner
@CoffeeRacerUS7 ай бұрын
@@steveybiggunzgaming8118 we have tested the Play with a couch and it works great! The caster wheels on the Play lock to prevent movement under heavy braking. The Play is extremely rigid. We’re going to release Fanatec DD1 max torque testing content soon. The Go prevents movement either with the optional locking caster wheels or with the rubber screw-in “feet”. The Living prevents movement with included rubber strips for the bottom of the unit. All models can be used with a couch or desk chair. If you’re using a desk chair, the desk chair mount is highly recommended to connect your desk chair to the rig for increased rigidity.

@@mementomori4972this rig is mainly designed for direct drive wheels. And direct drive wheels are not for kids. There are videos from game bugs when ppl nearly broke their arms from the ff. @@inot88j24 Direct drive wheels can be used by everybody. there is no age restriction. Fanatec for example recommends the age of 6 for the cls DD. The power output can be adjusted, so what are you talking about? No one just said "mAkE iT BeTter" without pointing out a valid reason as for why,...and the size of the wheelbase is no factor at all.

I hope you guys get to mention to the CEO of Fanatic about the crappy connections to the CSL DDs, as well as Fanatic handbreak & its headphone jack plug. Would be nice to hear them acknowledge the terrible design & if they're moving to more modern plugs, cable management & well designed jacks. The Logitech G29 has better cable management (for cable stress) than the more expensive & modern Fanatec gear.
