I've watched a bunch of videos lately, and realized that did not use the same grips as anybody else when I pitched. I got really good movement, and the movement intended from the pitch was supposed to be. I think the only conventional grip I had was a circle change. I don't know how that happened, or why none of my coaches ever corrected it lol.

Can you share your opinion and experience in when a pitcher should start trying to throw these? I would assume 7-8 grade at earliest? Also is the sinker the same as a tailing 2 seam fastball? Thank you and Justin for providing great info!
@blakedemand80206 жыл бұрын
Sam Domino I started as a freshman Bc if u start to early for some people you may cause elbow pain if the child’s growth plates in the elbow are not together yet
@DozaSlayer6 жыл бұрын
You can throw a sinker whenever you want. Most kids that become pitchers have either a natural sinker or a natural cutter, the sinker being the better of the two. A cutter means that the pitcher is turning his wrist over, which can lead to elbow strain. NO KID SHOULD THROW A SLIDER OR CUTTER UNTIL THEYRE AT LEAST 21!! I think it’s important to practice, but both of the pitches rely on wrist action, and that always comes back to the elbow, so only during a bullpen would i recommend throwing a slider or cutter. The risk is too high, and it’s much simpler to work on a curveball/changeup combo anyway. Two hall of famers in Pedro and John Smoltz have voiced their concerns about it as well
@blakedemand80205 жыл бұрын
DozaSlayer curveball is way harder on you than a slider. I throw a pretty nasty slider and it’s just moving my fingers over to the laces and it works . Cutter I could see why
@DozaSlayer5 жыл бұрын
Blake Demand Just look at actual pros talking about sliders vs curveballs. When you’re throwing a slider over 80mph, just having the fingers in the right place doesn’t work. Unless you’re slowing your arm action, the quicker you pitch it, the flatter it will be. There’s literally a video where John Smoltz goes in detail about the dangers of throwing sliders. I don’t know who could be a better guide than a bonafide hall of famer
@blakedemand80205 жыл бұрын
DozaSlayer every arm is different. Some guys can throw certain pitches and certain ways without strain on the elbow. I had elbow pain as a kid just throwing 4seam. Some guys that throw sub make it , some don’t . Every arm is different. No one really knows the answer why, but I do know pain is telling you to stop. So if you have pain throwing the pitch , quit .

Around 6:20 mark, your up close grip of the cutter shows it based on the 4 seam grip. However, you verbally mention using it off a 2 seam grip, and then when the next frames zoom out, it shows what looks like a 2 seam grip. Kind of confusing, it’d be better if you showed the up close grip of the 2 seamer that you say the cutter is based off of.

Pretty surprised by the amount of people in the comments that can't grasp the concepts of what Coach Zack is saying. He told you exactly how to grip the ball and exactly what motions to make. Him throwing the pitch isn't going to suddenly make you understand. I personally thought it was a good video, cause I thought it was easy to understand, and it will be easy to teach to my players. People just don’t get that throwing a cutter or slider is super damaging to the arms of major leaguers, and yet they want their teenagers to try it out before they’re developed. You might have a pitcher who does extremely well with them in high school, but it’s not going to be worth it when they need tommy john by the time they’re 20

Any of these pitches, on avg takes a good 3 years to develop. You should note that for most of the 14 year old kids. They think they their have these pitches doen in a few days. You need a good fastball 2 or 4 seem, then you need to develop your next 2. Usually a curve, but something like. A slider is the game changer. That makes the fastball stand out. Good video though.👍
