Stellaris is a real-time grand strategy game set in space, beginning in the year 2200. Players take control of a species in its early stages of interstellar space exploration, right after the invention of faster-than-light (FTL) spaceship technology, ready to claim a place as one of "the species of the stars". Depending on several factors, such as the ethics of the civilization and the player's desires, the ultimate goal of the empire can range from galactic conquest, hoarding of resources and technological supremacy, to the peaceful coexistence or absolute destruction of all sentient life.

Ah yes I remember the first time I encountered a fallen empire and insulted them, just for right after that I get declared and totally destroyed. I love this game.

The first time I played this i didnt know about fallen empires, they attacked an ally of mine so i decided to help my ally by attacking them. My empire got totally destroyed shortly after. I also love this game

@@Yourebeautyfull I've been lucky then. My fist encounter ever was me declaring war on them, met their first fleet (which was 4 times the strength of mine - and that was all I had at that time), apologizing and making peace (they were xenophil) to just come back later with a planet buster and 3 times their fleet strength, wiping them out completely. It was huge fun. I just started another run with a new empire, can't get enough of that game.

I colonized near them, they wanted me to leave some systems behind, to make my borders smaller and humiliate me. I stood my ground... but I was not aware that anyone can have 20x my military power (I had about a third of a galaxy at the time IIRC). They wiped the floor with me. Next run, I spawned near a xenophiliac fallen empire, I kept a good relationship with them. I was very friendly overall, to all our galactic neighbours, and after some small wars and vasalizing some militarist xenophobic amphibians and crumbling their empire, I managed to build a galactic federation. Later on, we all fought the unbidden together, the fallen empire awakened and joined our forces. I love this game.

These tracks make me think of humanity becoming a true spacefaring civilization. We need to move on from our primitive instinctive behavior like wars and greed and come together as a species.

Greed yes for sure, selfishness is a major hinderance to our progression as a species right now as resources (money) are hoarded by those in charge instead of being used to develop technologies and infrastructure to make us a multi-planetary species. War on the other hand, we don't get anywhere close to where we are without war because necessity drove the invention of technologies which are the backbone of where we currently are. Moving forward through, you're probably right about that too, in that modern war on a large scale would bring so much destruction that technologies derived wouldn't be worth it.

Selfishness -- the promise of a better life -- drove men to the West. War launched Gagarin into space, atop a modified ballistic missile. War put Apollo on the moon. Every major technological development of the past two centuries, from radio to the internet, from steam turbines to space rockets, we owe to the military-industrial complex. It will not be high-minded humanitarian ideals, but war, greed, selfishness, lust -- the raw power of the Beast Within -- that will give us the stars.

Meh. You can certainly make that claim; but you can't prove that without war, we wouldn't have invented these things anyway. Many inventions and the advancement of science were and still are done outside wartimes as well, so war is certainly not the only or even a necessary driver for our progress. And even before greed, there is a chance that mere self-preservation might force us to come up with a way to leave the planet.
