this "did it affect play" garbage needs to go. if the offense picked a defender, and the defender was STILL able to get the D like at 1:03:21, why in the world should the advantage go to the offense? i really think "did it affect play" should mean "did it affect the defense"

I think that is the USAU rule. I do like the WFDF rule, because offensive receivers often stop automatically upon hearing pick, even after the disc has been thrown. If this rule was changed, then everyone would have to act like a pick is not a stoppage, which might lead to some dangerous contact. I'm not sure what the solution is, apart from being honest as players and upholding exemplary spirit, even when so much is at stake.

@@steffen1405 I didn't know there was a difference in pick rulings so thanks for the enlightenment. I would prefer that it be universal that all pick calls are immediate stoppages of play and that any continuation of play after the pick is called is nullified. This is mostly due to the fact that if you are on offense and not everyone hears the pick call at the same time, you can have dropped or missed passes due to the disruption of focus between players. And that leads to unfair turnovers. Whatever the solution can we just have consistency please? lol

The unclear or just overly difficult to learn rules and expectation on the players to notice their opponents cheating is something that holds Ultimate back IMO. If I could just go out on the field and try my hardest without having to deal with the likes of Garveys bullshit calls then I would enjoy the game more.

I guess he argued that because his defender called pick, he wasn't playing offence at 100% (e.g. running to the disc), assuming his defender was out of contention. Which begs the question: Did he really know it was *his* defender that called pick? And would he genuinely have played differently had he not heard the call? Only Garvey knows the truth... The other aspect, may be that the defender continued to play D despite calling pick, (thereby invalidating the call?) so offence can claim to be indirectly affected, but D wasn't (apparently, as he played on), thereby giving D a (psychological) advantage?

I'm assuming WFDF rules are different in this scenario. In USAU, that's absolutely 100% a turnover. If the thrower doesn't acknowledge the pick and chooses to throw, it's a turn. It has nothing to do with the action of the receiver.

He said he heart the pick call and stopped playing, so the call affected him and because the call was before the throw, the disc goes back. By the rules, that's correct but imo massively missinterpretated, should've just caught the disc

1:49:34 If the defender hadn't called it out, I think Jagt would have carried on playing! (his body language suggested so as he picked up the disc off the floor!), despite knowing full well that he had dropped the disc. This win-at-all-cost mentality is painful to watch :(
