Dude, Madrost are awesome! I just signed three bands, Hellbender (CA), Madrost (CA) and From the Ruins (NV). I'm excited about all three. Madrost are pure technical/progressive thrash. Brilliant. From the Ruins are like Judas Priest on speed. Hellbender have a slightly more modern bend. They are as influenced by Slayer, Maiden and Priest as they are Lamb of God, Pantera and Biohazard.

Forced Entry is such a great record, I saw them live back in the day as they used to cross the border and play up here once in awhile (Canada). I think being from Seattle hurt them a bit, as the metal scene there wasn't too happening in the late 80's.

Hi Scott!!! Just when i thought more than fifty thrash bands to look after was a big task , now we have 25!!! well of course i know Sepultura, the rest of them just a few like Xentrix, cool UK band.... I kind of like old thrash bands, because they were the creators of the style that has not change very much, and many new bands to the same thing it was already done 30 years ago.... Also i think the Big 4 or maybe 8, got the exact mix of songs, looks, management and label, IMO be at the right palce at the right time. Hope you keep on with this series, cheers and take care
@nolifetilmetal14 жыл бұрын
I agree that many new bands are doing the same thing but I don't see that as a band thing. Stevie Ray Vaughn played the blues. He didn't really do anything new or innovative to a style of music that has it's origins in the 1800's, but he was great at what he did. That's how I see a lot of new thrash bands. They are not trying to reinvent the wheel. They are hoping on the wheel and riding it at full speed. Also, I think some bands like Vektor and Madrost really do bring something new to the game, mixing in progressive rock into the genre.

Fantastic Scotty. I will use this video as a reference for future thrash metal info. I remember Sepultura from the early eighties. Most of the others were new to me. Man you surely know your metal. Another great video, Scott! Thrash is just fantastic music. I really appreciate the mention of Xentrix on here - "Bury the Pain" is an incredible album, and I've been listening to it ever since I first watched this video. And speaking of making recommendations, have you heard of Cyanide Grenade? They're fairly new. Their debut album "Quintessence of Death" came out in 2018. It's just pure speed all the way through - a chaotically beautiful experience, and I'd highly recommend it!

Maybe I overlooked it, but did you include the Enforcer by German band Warrant (not the US hair metal one)? A fantastic record! And yeah, there is a lot top class trash, speed and Metal on steroids albums outside the Big 4. You covered the cream of the cream in your series (Heathen, Powermad, Hexx, Helstar, Annihilator and so many more). Great job ✊

Whereas I'm familiar with a number of these bands I don't think I've heard any of them. Then just as I type that you show In Search Of Sanity and Death & Insanity! lol. I find modern thrash to be really hit or miss, I either love it or hate it and often happy with just one album from a band. In my opinion there is nowhere for them to go musically, because they "have to" stick to the template that was laid down 30 years ago, they just sound samey after one release. The one I need the most is the Zoetrope - A life of Crime, a MFN pressing of course! great series Scott.

To me was mix of Testament and Slayer with semi-Christian lyrics. I forgot about Anacrusis. When I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, some of us Marine metalheads ventured across the border to Tijuana to see them open for Galactic Cowboys and Overkill in 1991. Good show all around...except for one of our friends getting knocked down in the pit and we thought he broke his arm. Turned out to be he did something to his elbow and had to be drained. I have it on CD. Haven't spun it in some time. I had to go back to my website to see what I had even said about the... I grew disenchanted with C.O.C. over they years for some reason, and had not listened to anything from them for quite some time. However, I picked up "Blind" at a used store for a few bucks and was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed it. This is a stunning heavy metal album. C.O.C. have completely dropped the punk and hardcore influences on this disc and have gone head long into Black Sabbath inspired, sludge, doom metal. The only hint of their punk beginnings is in the overtly political lyrical themes and incredible thrash-like aggression. Blind" is a riff-tastic, head banging metal fest with a slight retro edge that tips it's hat to the master of all metal riffs, Tony Iommi. See if "Vote With A Bullet" doesn't get your feet tapping and your head banging. There are some elements on this disc that some might mistake for being 'nu-metal', but this CD predates nu-metal by almost a decade. The bonus tracks are all a nice addition. I particularly like the down home, foot stompin', front porch blues of "Jim Bean." Obviously a novelty tune, but one that pointed towards the more 'southern' direction the band would take in the future.

C.O.C. on "Blind" sounds unique. Gem from 90's. After "Blind" , C.O.C. were getting more a sludge/southern rock/metal; i like it too. 2005's "in the arms of god" still sounds ok to me. The big four were in some senses lucky. I mean why did Slayer make it over Dark Angel. Why Anthrax over Exodus and on and on. There are some really good bands who didn't make it through the demo stage. Sometimes talent is not enough

Hey, thanks for quoting me (twice), dude 😎 But I never said that every thrash metal band other than the Big 4 were garbage - I said they just weren't as good. I enjoy listening to some B and C grade thrash metal (and tradition metal as well) bands. In Search Of Sanity was one of the last thrash metal albums I bought after I pretty much outgrew the genre in 1989, and I dug it - very late 80's Metallica and Anthrax influenced. It's a little lifeless and sterile-sounding though. And I love Hallow's Eve and Nasty Savage! I used to listen to Tales Of Terror and Nasty Savage's first album all the time back in '85. Both bands have a pretty cool and unique sound. I think Hallow's Eve could've been almost close to Big 4 level if they refined their sound a little more and had a better production. Stacy Anderson was a great singer and they had some good songs too. I also dug Zoetrope (pronounced "e-trope), another band with a cool and pretty unique sound - their drummer Barry Stern (later of Trouble) was the lead vocalist. Cheers! 🤘🏼

HinjuRock No you didn’t but the guy I was having this same discussion with on Facebook did. He feels that no band is better than Metallica and Megadeth. He’s just a big fanboy of those two bands. I just don’t see things the way you do. I don’t see it as A, B and C level. I see it as, bands I like and bands I don’t like. In many cases I feel that bands like Metallica and Slayer have releases pure crap while a band like Dark Angel or Flotsam & Jetsam have better overall. catalogs.

@@nolifetilmetal1 I don't think any Metallica or Slayer albums are "pure crap". (well, Lulu probably is - lol Never really listened to it since it wasn't a full-on Metallica album) - they just experimented with different musical influences and directions. Pure thrash is a pretty limited genre -Metallica moved beyond that even on Ride The Lightning (featuring a ballad and an instrumental, and For Whom The Bell Tolls, which is early groove metal IMO), as did Slayer with South Of Heaven (slower songs with more groove, cleaner vocals, more sophisticated guitar melodies and solos, etc) Good bands progress and refine and expand their sound rather than putting out the same album over and over. Also, Dark Angel broke up and hasn't released an album since the early 90's. Supposedly one is in the works now that they reformed.

HinjuRock There is no new Dark Angel album in the works yet, though I wish there was. Spoke to Ron on the phone juSt before the virus craziness. I like much more than thrash but Metallica haven’t released a good album since the black album and St Anger and Lulu are the pure garbage I spoke of. (St Anger is a million dollar turd.) If any unknown band had released St Anger even as a demo they would not have been given the time of day. Slap Metallica on the cover and people will defend it to the hilt. South of Heaven is awesome.

@@nolifetilmetal1 Load and Reload have some great heavy rock songs with a grunge and Southern rock influence, and feature some of James' best lyrics and vocals. St. Anger has some good songs (Frantic and the title track are really good), but the lack of guitar solos and that weird-ass snare sound ruined it. Death Magnetic was a good return to (semi) thrash metal form, but it sounds rushed and some of the songs aren't very memorable - kind of B grade Metallica, which is still better than 99% of other thrash metal bands' A grade material. And Hardwired encapsulates all of Metallica's about - "Spit Out The Bone" is the best thrash metal song they've written since "Blackened" and "Here Comes Revenge" is dark, haunting and has GREAT lyrics and vocals (like Load and Reload's best songs)

@@nolifetilmetal1 And Ron Rinehart might be the better singer, but to me Don Doty is Dark Angel, same as Paul Baloff is with Exodus. We Have Arrived is my favorite DA album (and song)
