As a pilot that used to operate those kind of flights I can tell you what many people don't realize on that routing is that once you coast out from Mexico there is really nowhere to go if you have a problem. It's quite a long time to reach any kind of diversion airport. My worst nightmare wasn't an engine failure but rather an onboard fire.

I live in Baja, Mexico, and pretty often the flights from Texas on route to Australia or new Zealand pass above and you can see them, and always question my self after this point they have nothing but water below for several hours, and find that kind of scary and amazing at the same time, and even worst because most of the time they pass at midnight o completely dark, so I cannot believe the feeling of having the darkness of the Pacific ocean in front of you.

Eventually, I went back. The first itinerary when I came back? Australia / New Zealand, and everywhere in between. I was amazed by the beauty of New Zealand. I had the best long haul flight with Air NZ Three years ago LA to Sydney in Premium Economy. You were treated like Business Class Passengers, food was prepared individually and bought to you individually, not on a heated trolly rack and on a round crockery plate with real cutlery. You had your name on the TV screen to welcome you to your seat. The personal attention you got from the cabin crew was amazing, I never felt like a Premium Economy passenger more like Business Class without the seat. Leg room at the time was amazing. I have flown Cathy Pacific, Lufthansa and Qantas Premium and they would not even come close to Air NZ. But looking at the video, it would appear that Premium now get the Standard Ready Made Meal, just a step up from Economy. I would hope that the service in Premium has not been downgraded. Air NZ at that time I’m sure would of been the Class Leader in Premium. Lufthansa was very average, Cathy about the same, Qantas was better but standard way too low compared to NZ at the time. I only just returned on Qantas a few days ago on Premium to and from London. A slight improvement on three years ago, but still substandard to Air NZ three years ago. I hope Air NZ have not gone backwards?

It’s likely so they can add more business class seats and still have room for a lay flat bed. It angles to the center of plane to make it easier for cabin crew to serve the business class travelers. I have flown 10 hours from Honolulu to Kansai on a typical economy seat near a window. Since the route was over the ocean. There was not much to see. On a 17 hour flight. Their menu is improving too, even for domestic flights within NZ. Like being served a 3 course meal. Plane probably only operates at half its maximum legal capacity, just so that it can make the very long trip. 200 is still a lot of passengers.

I think Air NZ is learning how to optimize this long route. The pilot are conservative in their calculations by taking extra fuel and blocking off lot of seats. I see United fly non-stop between SFO and SIN on 787 so I believe Air NZ can optimize their ops and have better performance in the future.

Yes, they dropped London as they retired the 777-200ER's over the covid period leaving only the 787-9's and 7x 777-300ER's. There is an order for 787-10's underway to replace the rest of the 777's. Hopefully 777-8's some time in the future for this ultra long haul!

What Sam didn't mentioned, the low cabin pressure, reduces jet lag and gives better sleep. He also didn't mention the Sky Coach product that is available in Economy Class where 3 seats can turn into a lay flat bed. The flight has 2 captains and 2 first officers and 13 flight attendants. As launch customer for the B787-9, Air New Zealand has been working with RR and Boeing to enhance the range of the B787-9 on a tank of gas. The AKL/JFK is at the maximum safety range of the current generation B787-9's. Qantas will be launching their AKL/JFK nonstop services using B787-9's from June 2023.

The 787 has been around for a loooong time now. I think most people know that it’s design allows for a cabin air pressure, that helps reduce jet lag. The 787-9 has also been around for a long time. ANZ working with Boeing etc to improve fuel efficiency, would most definitely be required, IF ANZ want to configure their 787-9, with so many seats, AND, then want to fly such a vast distance ! Qantas 787-9 are configured with a lot fewer seats then the set up ANZ ( currently ) use, and this means that Qantas ( should be able ) to fly their 787-9 at full PAX load, from JFK to AKL. Unlike ANZ, who don’t fly this sector at full PAX, ( 70 seats left empty on the first flight, and PAX load has since been reduced further ) because they need a lower weight, so that their 787-9 can fly such a distance. The video did note that luggage was also offloaded before JFK departure, to further reduce weight. Also been a lot of media focus on the situation whereby strong head winds, on the flight from JFK, will possibly result in the need for a quick refuel stop in Fiji, IF ANZ operate the flight at a certain total weight. This is why ANZ have now lowered further the total number of PAX on the flight, and no cargo etc. ANZ have taken various measures, with a view of avoiding the need for a quick stop in Fiji, to add fuel. Highly unlikely that Qantas will have any of these same issues, when they start flying this route next year.
@chrismckellar93502 жыл бұрын
@@StephenFogarty2023 - Air NZ was the launch customer of the B787-9 and has been working with Boeing to extend the range of the B787-9 on a tank of gas, resulting in Boeing launching the B787-10 'HGW' or 'extended range' which will apply to the B787-9. Air NZ has ordered two additional B787-9 and the six B787-10 'extented range'. Air NZ B787-9 fleet is made up 10 B787-9 dubbed the V1's with a total of 302 seats and 4 B787-9 dubbed the V2's with 275 seats. The 2 B787-9 on order are dubbed the V3's with 225 seats. The B787-9 V2's are restricted to 250 seats AKL/JFK and 180 seats JFK/AKL. The B787-9 V3' s are planned to operate AKL/JFK/AKL services only. Despite the initial teething issues, there has been no further issues with the JFK/AKL service in the last couple of weeks. With regards to your comment that Qantas B787-9's may not experience similar issues when operating JFK/AKL is debatable, as they could similar weathers issues as Air NZ, as they will using the same flight path.
@StephenFogarty20232 жыл бұрын
@@chrismckellar9350 IMO, from a PR & Marketing perspective, the issues ANZ have faced, and the associated press, has not been ideal.. “ no further teething issues in last couple of weeks “ On the basis of the dramatic reduction in PAX, and cargo load on the flights, you would hope so ! I’m sure that behind the scenes, a lot of scrambling has been going on, very recently, at ANZ, due to them lowering PAX numbers, and thus the need to reschedule many people, who were already booked on flights. Qantas 787-9 has max PAX of 236. On the basis of the issues faced by ANZ, I’m sure Qantas will be triple checking calculations, so that they do avoid the same issues, and the associated, bad press that ANZ have received. In due course, we will know, if Qantas do operate their flights, from AKL / JFK / AKL, with 236 PAX, or not. If Qantas do fly JFK to AKL, with less then 236, I’d say they will make a decision on what this number will b, well before they begin their flights in June 2023. This decision on PAX numbers, will be made to avoid needing to reschedule people who have already booked, and / or to also avoid not taking luggage ( which is an inconvenience to PAX, that won’t b popular ) Of course, when Project Sunrise flights begin, Sydney to NYC will be direct, via the A350-1000. Whether or not, Qantas then continue with the Sydney to AKL, to JFK route, via a 787-9, remains to be seen. ✈️ 💺
