I've only watched a handful of episodes of Ultra Q, but I am fascinated by it as the precursor of Ultraman; and the Blazar tribute episode was pretty great

An interesting fact of note for 19:05, I've heard a few folks put up the suggestion that this episode is the source of hitogata (aka the japanese psa featuring two white figures on a railroad track) due to the girl's echo fading in and out alongside a few other things.

These monsters look crude now, but on a low-resolution CRT TV, they looked more atmospheric and scary actually. Back then, shows were made to look best at 640x480. Most of us are watching them on like FHD (1920x1080) monitors now.

After months of binging the entire Showa Ultra series, Ultra Q is still my favorite. As far as the Twilight Zone comparison, I liken it more to Kolchak The Night Stalker, with it's recurring characters and monster focus. I watched a lot of it as a kid, which is probably why I liked this so much.

There's a form of '60s melancholy' that I can only find in Ultra Q, compared to any other media from that decade, I really can't explain it, but it's just beautifully melancholic.

Such a cool series! I knew nothing about this series until the late 90s. I first saw the episodes on VHS, and they were NOT subtitled in English, so I had to guess at how some of the kaiju featured were being defeated, but even so, I enjoyed the slick and moody visuals and seeing some well-known Japanese actors from the Godzilla films. So happy when TOKYO SHOCK released the subtitled series to DVD. Each episode was like a mini monster movie. As always, TOHO SPFX were a delight to behold. Thank you for this informative post.

iirc the reason why the final episode of Ultra Q was underhwhelming was cause all the episodes were released out of order. "Defeat Gomess" was filmed halfway through production but was released as the very first episode. Though I wish they wouldve given us a kaiju in the final episode atleast.

Great review and deep dive into this series! I always thought the human characters from Ultra Q were part of a special military attack squad like in Ultraman only without him fighting the giant kaiju all the time and of course twilight zone's influence. Neat to know that it was somewhat different with more kaiju than I thought. Lol I hope more of those hilarious dub clips show up or that whole dub is found

This was pretty interesting. Actually made me go buy it on Prime Video. And Ippei sounds like a rather common troupe I have seen in anime, must be a common gag in Japan. There is almost always a third wheel character in a group. In anime the character usually has at least one physical trait like small eyes, big glasses, large lips, a big nose, a bad haircut, or being overweight. Usually a mix of these traits. Except in anime this character forces himself into situations where he becomes the third wheel. He will tease the protagonist about things and bring up bad stories at the worst times. He also tends to laugh loudly at his own jokes. I'm interested to see if Ippei meets any of these criteria or if he is more a lovable goof, like Rom from DS9.

It could also be seen as a precursor to The X Files in a way, too. There was a similar series based on some manga about a boy and a Magician/London After Midnight looking dude that is pretty cool, but the name escapes me

I finished my first watch of this show last year. Found it a lot more enjoyable than I thought, especially enjoying a good deal of the non-kaiju episodes. However, I'm reminded of something Guillermo del Toro once said. An anthology is only as strong as its weakest episode.

Hey dude, great episode! I don't know if you have read it, but I am wondering if you are going to end up including it in this series, but the 2020 Marvel comic series "Rise of Ultraman" is pretty good, or rather the first issue that I read was. It seems to be pretty respectful to the franchise and actually has a miniature "Ultra Q" comic at the end of the issue. I'd say that it is worth checking it out if you haven't already.

I would recommend getting Neo Ultra Q as well. It's not that expensive. $15 retail, often sold for less new. The Ultra Q steelbook is becoming harder to find. I think Ultraman (original) and Ultraseven steelbook editions are sold out. The Ultraseven 55th Anniversary special collection was released last week. Nothing to speak of in extras other than the booklet that comes with this Blu ray ray set but the curated episodes and movies/specials are generally excellent. Of course, if you already have Ultraseven the Complete Series you're double dipping BUT if you don't have the movies the collection has virtually every appearance of Ultraseven (major, significant cameos) in this set for roughly $25 which is cheaper than hunting out every single Blu ray release out there! My only complaint is that my set came with this weird "industrial dust" on the inside of the Amaray packing. I had to wipe it off the inside of the Amaray case and from the reflective/play side of at least 4 of my discs! No playback issues. This wasn't Amazons fault. It happened at the replicator plant where the Blu ray set was pressed. If I'm not mistaken, the special 7-minute Ultraseven anniversary mini-film already played in Japanese theaters. I thought it might be on the special edition set released last week bu tit wasn't (of course)! Who knows when we'll see it in English (subtitled at least)?

I will always contest that Ultra Q was at its best when it WASN'T trying to be a Twilight Zone ripoff (most of those episodes I frankly found weak, The 1/8th Project in particular was almost unwatchable) and focused more on the kaiju stories; I also wish it had actual character development/continuity, and didn't focus so much on unbearably annoying 60's toku kids for half the episodes. Given this, I didn't much care for the sequels either; changing into Ultraman was ultimately for the best for the franchise.

I certainly am not a fan of the more humor based episodes. I recall one episode where a thief fights the pilot guy, beats pilot guy, and you'd think the thief would leave with pilot out cold. Nope cuts to thief being flown by pilot guy. Just stuck to me the way it was edited.

This is one of my top 5 least favorite installments of the entire Ultra Series. It's not a bad show by any means, but because it is essentially Japanese Twilight Zone, and being someone who is not a fan of The Twilight Zone at all, this is an insanely dry, nearly incoherent and incomprehensible head trip.
