This was the ultra-wet start to the Saturday race for the 2021 Freedom Sprints run by the SCCA at High Plains Raceway in Colorado.
I was on outside pole in my FA-classed F1000 for the run group, and a P1 was on pole. Neither of us had rain tires handy, so we were running slicks. The cars gridded in the row behind us, a Swift 014a and an FM, were running rain tires. The video shows us leaving the false grid, the installation lap, and the first lap of the race. Note the lockup going into T10 at about 20 mph during the installation lap (at 6:59 ). Note also the large amounts of standing water everywhere. Finally, note the huge lockup going into T1 at the start of the race (at 4:30 ).
This was by far the slowest I've lapped HPR in any car, ever. There was zero grip. It was like driving on ice. The first lap was over three and a half minutes! That was almost two minutes longer than my dry quali time. I was more or less idling around the track, just trying to stay out of the way of the cars running rains.
For comparison, the driver of the polesitter P1 car in this video has multiple class lap records at HPR. We puttered around the track together for the entire "race".
If you're wondering why in the world I was even out there, the answer is simple: I needed credit for the race so that I could qualify to go to the Runoffs. Thus, the insanity.
For comparison, here's my PR lap set earlier that day in the same car: • F1000 lap ( 1:44.80 ) ...
