Where is a good place to start in this hobby and what is a good price point so it is not a scam

That depends on what you mean by "this hobby." Are you referring to radio controlled vehicles in general or construction radio controlled machines. The RC hobby is vast. You've got on road only cars, off road trucks and truggies, rock crawlers, bashers competition and super scale modelers, then there is the stuff that flies. Air planes, jet planes, helicopters, EDF's, drones and more. Finally we have the things that go on and/or in the water (boats, ships and submarines...and submersible drones). There are the electric/battery powered stuff which is were most people start in the RC hobby and highly experienced people stay where others make the move to nitro and/or gasoline powered vehicles. There is an emerging tech known as FPV (First Person View). You have a camera mounted somewhere on the vehicle that transmits a live video feed to a device the controller watches. This isn't a complete list of RC things you can get into,for instance I didn't mention RC robots or dual usage RC (it can traverse the ground or thru the air/water) nor did I mention the war ships and that whole thing (some are for battling each other, others are strictly for show on the water. Tanks is another one that can get real expensive real quick.

$150 - $300 is a good starting point for an RTR (Ready To Run) RC vehicle. Look for a 4X4 basher because generally they are more durable and handle better than comparable RC's. You might also want to get a roll of body tape ($20) to protect the lexan body from cracking and shattering. Finally you should think about a set of dedicated tools ($30 - $60 for starters) so you can work on your RC, which you will be doing a lot of. Make sure the RC you pick has plenty of replacement and upgrade aftermarket parts availability so you can replace that broken part or get a better part with relative ease. Don't buy the flashy, eye catching, one off, no name brand because those things are really cheap and no aftermarket parts or customer service after the think catches on fire. Go with electric/battery powered (with a $150 - $300 price range, battery may be your only option). I suggest staying away from nitro and gasoline until you've got some experience under your belt and have access to people who drive nitro or gasoline RC's. This is a hobby that can get real expensive, real quick if you let it but if you can keep control of your spending then after a few years you'll realize you don't need the latest, most expensive chunk of RC eye candy for your car.
