Admittedly have not played many shmups outside of the occasional arcade games as a kid, but seeing how expansive the variety of the gameplay between titles makes it an enticing genre to get into. Oh. That "kiai". When I saw the title "Kiaidan" written in katakana, I was wondering about the title, until I saw the word "kiai", written in kanji in the game's dialogue. So technically, the title, if written in kanji, would mean "Kiai Brigade". For those who don't understand what "kiai" is. To put it simply, it's what fighters do to show their fighting spirit by shouting "hyahhhh!!" or "yaaaahhhhhh!!!" or "haiyaaaahhhh!!!". Like in karate, kungfu, etc.

I believe there's a part in the intro that shows Kiaidan written as 気合弾, so this "dan" is probably "bullet"
