The reason why backseating is so prevalent in the Ultrakill community is because the game itself is chock-full of many moments and mechanics that just makes you go "holy shit you CAN DO THAT?". This means that when a streamer plays it, many people immediately want to see their reaction to cool mechanic number 7. I have a friend who is dying to play Ultrakill but he's waiting for the release of Act III, and the only thing i'm going to tell him when he finally plays it is that weapons interact with each other and to experiment with it, i really want to see his reaction to the shotgun parry but i also want him to discover it on his own.

ULTRAKILL has become a huge part of my life as someone who is both neurodivergent and recovering from burnout. I've always used the metaphor of old computer architecture to understand my thought processes, and experiencing a game with direct, immediate movement feedback where I play a robot that has no room for any higher thought more complex than "kill everything" and "kill everything faster" is therapeutic and freeing to me. I went from from complaining about the game being too hard even on Accessible to P-Ranking P-1 on Violent, and that accomplishment is something I frequently use as a reminder that I'm not nearly as broken as I imagine. The game's combat has become my comfy place, to the point where I find a casual dual with P-1's boss in VR to be something I do just to unwind. At least for this unit, ULTRAKILL has been a therapy session wrapped up in the tightest FPS I've ever played. The silly goofball energy that the community has and the focused, thoughtful vision of Hakita & co. are directly to thank for giving a sluggish old machine like me a ladder to climb.

When I first played the game and P-ranked act 1 on lenient I was super happy, I considered sharing it with the community, I quickly made a reddit account to post it and the first other post I saw of someone p ranking p-2 on standard had at least five comments telling them to do it on violent or it wasn't an achievement at all. I got the hell out of there and never looked back, later I told a friend about it (a friend who didn't even play the game) and he laughed at me and called me trash for not doing it on a higher difficulty 💀. (Don't worry, me and the entire friend group ditched that guy). I know I won't be able to pull off complex railconpunches or crazy combos, but I still have lots of fun doing simpler ones, I don't care if someone says my achievement isn't impressive, I'm testing my own abilities, and I'm happy about my results.

I'm currently playing on harmless difficulty. The way I see it, game difficulties exist for a reason. If the devs made an easy difficulty, people are meant to play on easy if they want to. Huh, I'm honestly surprised this video flew under my radar for a whole week but I'm very glad it made its way to me! Given that I'm the person responsible for one of the most visible and scathing critiques of the Ultrakill community on this website, you might think I'm one of the people who might disagree with this perspective, but I've had a lot of people ask me if I'm ever going to make a proper follow up video to that since the community has continued to grow and change since then, and honestly... I'll probably just point them to this video instead, because while we've obviously had slightly different experiences with this community, to one point I can absolutely agree and it's that the good drastically outweighs the bad, and drawing undue attention to the bad parts of the community doesn't really do much to improve the situation past a certain point. I think my biggest takeaway from getting into this community is that gaming "communities" just aren't for me really anymore, I've met extremely cool people through the Ultrakill community (just gonna echo the shoutout to Westaxle and Dryzalar, also BGB and many, MANY others, those dudes are absolutely holding it down and represent the best parts of the community) but it was never my intention to personally become some sort of 'voice' for the community on this issue, and I think my experience varies so drastically from the average person in the community that I have to acknowledge I'm just not equipped anymore to make sweeping assertions about a community I've kind of willingly distanced myself from. One thing, in the past year or so, that I've personally had to come to terms with, is that the average age of people *extremely invested* in the fandom of this game is... Under 18 and probably even *well under* 18. I hope that by myself and other members of the community pointing out behaviors we've seen that aren't okay, these people can grow and learn but at some point it's gonna just be what it's gonna be. It's easy to imagine everyone I interact with being just like me, and having similar life experience, but I've had to acknowledge I'm probably a decade older than the average person that is engaged enough with this game to be joining Twitch streams and leaving comments on KZbin, etc... I got into this game for probably very different reasons than them and my experience and perspective of the community is going to just be a whole different thing entirely from them... And at some point, kids with unfettered access to the internet and games made for adults, are going to act like... well, kids with unfettered access to the internet and games made for adults... Which is to say, immature, socially unaware, and oftentimes... Just plain mean. And at the end of the day that's a reality of the internet more than it is anything really hyper-specific to the Ultrakill community. Anyways, I'm rambling, sorry for the long comment, great video and I'm happy to pass some sort of metaphorical torch onto this video since it summed up my personal feelings on the current state of the community better than I probably could have.

Holy shit man, 1: I would have never expected this video to cross your path at all, just due to KZbin recommendations and that whole logic being kind of nebulous. 2: Youre one of the people that I admire, being the person who I learned a lot from in regards to things about that game that don't revolve around the gameplay itself, so it's just a little surreal seeing this comment. 3: I was blissfully ignorant to the age range of Ultrakills fandombase, and I think it might speak volumes to the ways that they act. Of course I don't want to generalize the audience OR use that as a means of playing down the behavior they exude, but hopefully we can learn to move past it and not let it deter us from making the best out of the game. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video, and if you really think this can act as your de facto follow up to your community video, I'm very honored lol

@@DJCerealSauce6455 Hah well honestly it got sent to me, presumably cause of the similar subject matter. Either way, thank you for the kind words! No pressure or anything intended by the 'passing the torch' comment, I just liked the video and it resonated with me is all. I think I'm mostly 'done' talking about the Ultrakill community on my channel, I'm just not cut out for it. If I did have one regret from my video though, it was that I didn't talk about the positives of the community enough and so I personally think this video covers that aspect really nicely, and is honestly more balanced in its criticisms! I still absolutely love this game, and many parts of the community, but I've kinda swore off trying to talk about the 'community' for many of the reasons I stated above. But also for that reason I'm always really happy to see other people still giving good nuanced takes on this stuff and just in general being a voice of reason. Keep it up! You definitely earned my sub.

I think that one of the "prime" examples of how the playerbase functions is MOONtyzoo's Sisyphus Prime video, where he fights Sisyphus at radiance 6. People frequently joke about how one day, people will p-rank the game at radiance level 10, and although these are usually aren't serious, I believe there is potential to complete challenges like these, which not only speaks volumes about how the community functions, but also how impressively the game is designed. When a player can beat a boss/challenge that is conventionally considered impossible because of how fast it is without needing to cheese, I believe that that is the hallmark of an incredibly well-designed game.
@DJCerealSauce6455
@DJCerealSauce6455 10 ай бұрын
On one hand I totally agree with this sentiment, that Radiance is impressive to watch someone beat it, and fills the gap for people who wanted to the game to be even more challenging without pissing off the rest of the community, but I REALLY REALLY hope we don't eventually go down the Souls-bourne tunnel of thinking the game get's a lot of it's value from being difficult, thus gatekeeping it from people who just want to play on the standard difficulties and not indule in Radiance levels

Ok first off all, thank you for featuring Carcass in the video, it means a lot to me Second I relate to pretty much anything you said in the video. Interactions between comunity members is pretty much the best thing about this game, like the entire game is made with the philosophy of "do what the fuck you want" and people go nuts over it. Dev releases tools and recently optimize their code to make it easyer for map creators and now we even have a unofficiall (Rude) and an official (Tundra) level creator and the game is not even out yet! Tho I need to say it would be a mistake to not point out all the criticism you pointed out and... god there are many. Like the fact is that Ultrakill is a game that you can experience blind only once and that's why it's so exiting to found new players to join the fun! Tho the problem comes when you realize that the community is very finicky when itb comes to certain things: example, you can't use the drill or the alt marksman whitout getting roasted and when new players go off the "intended path" most skilled players would raccomend, that's when the backseating reeeeeeally makes a name for itself... Like Albino has to dedicate an entire video on how annoying backseating was during is UK streams, and that's not really a good look for the community... Tho like you said, is not perfect, but that's ok. I will be forever grateful for what the comunity has done for me. I'm grateful to Duv, who still to this day makes custom theme songs for my characters/stages, that helped me getting Judas prime popular and I was just hearing a few hours ago to work on the Carcass OST. I'm grateful to Leslie, who I helped for a prime concept and is now a great and reliable friend of mine and talented voice actress. I'm grateful to Hydra and Waffle, who helped bringing Carcass and Revenant to life and now are helping with my custom stages, cuz I just make models, art and animations and I can't code for shit, and concidering I wanted to do game dev for years now this is a massive help these people gave me. I wanna see this game- god... this comunity becoming more, create more, just I wanna see it succeed. Tho yes it has it's hissue, but it sure won't stop it, I'm willing to bet Thanks again (sorry this comment is so fucking long...)

I think the issue is that the UK community has to learn that the more they try to force their play style on other people, the more pushback they'll receive. The most blatant one was when Albino played Ultrakill with people in chat and comments telling him how to play and back seating all the time, to the point that at last he made a video basically saying: "I know how to play the game. I know about some of the tricks. I know about weapon swapping, sliding, and momentum. I am playing using the slab revolver just to spite you fucks." Which... Honestly, fair.

As someone who has a back seating, problem with any video game that I have passion for not just ultrakill. I totally agree that this is indeed a problem. I can often find myself just really wanting to spew out everything for a game that I really enjoy and have put a lot of time into. to the point where I have to mentally confront myself to shut the hell up. Because at the same time as I want to give all of the information about the game. I understand that the reason that information was so fun to learn, was because I was the one who learned it. Now I’d like to note that I’m not nearly as aggressive as some people are. The only real time I’ll get REALLY lizard brained is when one of my friends wants to know about it. And that point it’s more or less what can I tell them without spoiling literally everything. But aside from all that, great video ! I adore critically, analyzing the things that I love which includes communities. if done correctly, it allows for recognition of the faults as well as the achievements in a way that makes it so that we can recognize and deal with shortcomings, While still moving forward. This video definitely gave me a new perspective on the community, my only knowledge of the community was meeting some people in public discord servers and from albinos tweet and 6 minute video discussing the community, giving off a bad impression of both their humor and manners, but seeing the great things in the community as you highlighted in the video, I overlook the elitism and humor in favor of the cool stuff.

I think ultimately, to ignore the flaws in the community would be allowing yourself to be complacent and not expect more from them, but to overdiscuss it is to allow yourself to feel cynical of everyone. Backseating is cool, but only if done right. If I tell my buddy that there are two things weapons shoot, projectiles and hitscan. He probably won't catch on. However, his subconscious will kick in the moment he discovered projectile boosting he knew exactly what he did. In the prologue, he asked if he could shoot the coin. I told him only hitscan can hit the coin, and I told him the coin was a projectile. He punched the coin the moment it clicked in his brain. And when he figured out the railcannon, guess what? He shot a magnet. Then shot the shotgun core (how we learned about nukes lol). Then he finally shot the coin and was fucking hooked. Unfortunately he lost interest 10 days later so I guess I'm stuck with his save taking up space, but this made me think. Which led me to this: Be a _soft_ backseater. Be subtle. Be sweet. Allow people to ULTRAKILL like a true gamer their own way.

this is a fucking genius way to "backseat people" because honestly, it's not even backseating, it's just giving them core mechanics that they would never reasonably be able to piece together, because of the way the games physics work
@smithbabies7886
@smithbabies7886 10 ай бұрын
@@DJCerealSauce6455I still consider it backseating since you're still telling them about things they wouldn't know otherwise, but it's so subtle they they wouldn't notice. This is because it _seems_ obvious enough to brush off but useful enough to maintain the knowledge of it. I really hope that people at least keep the basic mindset behind this so that secrets aren't ruined, but assistance, knowledge, and passion is still communicated and hopefully welcomed in the future. If enough people just do it, eventually the community will accept it as the norm.

I remember streaming my first playthrough of the game (I only ever stream for family and friends that live overseas so I can chat + play with them) and there entered 3 Ultrakill fans who made the entire experience… strange. From MaX0r quotes, to making gay jokes, to just straight up calling me braindead for not knowing certain weapon tech etc. the entire stream was me tryna enjoy the game while these 3 backseat viewers were ruining my first experience with what is now my favourite FPS game. Since then, I have had a couple helpful and encouraging people show up in chat and be really nice, but the majority of random veiwers that would show up when I would stream Ultrakill were just very cringe and now I just avoid the community 😓 I love watching new people play the game, and as much as I’d love to share all the amazing tech that the game has, I just advise that whoever is playing the game simply “read everything that you can” because alot of the really cool things you can do in the game can be found in the terminals and even through on screen pop-up tips, letting new players discover the hidden gems the game has, increasing the sheer fun and enjoyment of their first playthrough

Interesting thing about Ultrakill's soundtrack that despite being great, Ultrakill speedrunners seem to hate it. You see a level speedrun and the music is likely turned off or replaced with some other song. Why is this so, I don't know. Speedrunners of games with much worse soundtracks often leave the music intact, even if the said game has a volume slider.

i think you hit it right on the nose with the backseaters tbh. i remember before one of the more recent updates, the end of 1-S would take you straight into 1-2, instead of taking you back to the beginning of 1-1 like it does now. back then, the issue with backseaters was AGGREGIOUSLY bad because the MOMENT people would walk into that first room, the chat would be FILLED with "THROW A COIIN IN THE FOUNTAIN THRO THE COIN IN THE FOUTNAIN COIN IN FOUNTAIN" and of course, the streamer, not knowing any better, would do it. sure enough, this was a nice way to get people to see the wackiness of the secret levels in the game, thats all cool and good. but when a streamer would DO that, they would MISS THE ENTIRE LEVEL OF 1-1 WHICH IS NOT ONLY A BEAUTIFUL INTRODUCTION TO THE COOL, UNIQUE ATMOSPHERE OF LIMBO BUT ALSO AN INTRODUCTION TO HOW SKULLS WORKED AND THE NAILGUN. streamers who inadvertently skipped 1-1 missed both how they work and the fact that the nailgun SHREDS mal faces. i cannot tell you how many times watching a person experience the game for the first time would be RUINED by the chat spamming this needless garbage. that and projectile boosting. people who learn proboosting from backseaters then dont learn where to *not* use it and kill themselves constantly with it, creating unnecessary frustration in the later levels. anyway, good video. i'm making a video myself about the atmosphere in ultrakills levels and i think im going to reference your video on music a bit, if you are okay with that. youll be properly credited and everything. you had inspired me to say a few things about the ferryman and the levels in wrath. in any case, i look forward to the next one.

Someone made a whole fanmade soundtrack for p-3 about judas prime when the first layer of act 3 just released. It's crazy how talented the community is, sadly it does get tainted by the toxicity of some of it's playerbase but with how based Hakita is on the community and it's backseating. I think the community will hopefully mature as more people talk about the bad side. Though like how hakita commented on dumpster man's video, there will always be something bad and it'll likely increase with the popularity of the game. I just hope more people focus on the good side because I think the good really does outshine the bad with how passionate they are. I do think the overused jokes are kinda annoying though but that's just someones humor and at the end of the day is something I can scoff at for a second and then forget in another.

I started the game knowing all about slam storage, railcoining, projectile boosting, and all that silly tech, and I genuinely wish I had found that out on my own. Granted, I’m in 6-2 right now, but I feel like the journey there could have been way more fun, including taking a break from the game because for some reason I thought you had to p-rank act one to get to act 2? I just think that experiencing the game raw is a much better feeling than learning through KZbin tutorials, or comments and stuff.

I 100% agree that backseating is a major problem in the Ultrakill community. I remember this one time I was watching a streamer get the rocket launcher and immediately someone said "You can ride the rockets btw." It's super annoying to watch someone get told what to do and how to do it instead of watching their reaction when they either accidentally do it or figure it out via the terminal tips and such. It also sucks when you are trying to have fun with a game, only to be told you are "playing it wrong" because you aren't shotgun parrying or coin punching. (Plus, if you play on standard difficulty or lower, I am so sorry that parts of the ULTRAKILL community will attack you for that. If you have fun on standard, play on standard.)

So learning about new shit made me struck in awe. I learned about all useful tech after own research. And now the game is even more fun to play.(By the way, excuse my me for my poor English. The way you describe the ultrakill fanbase is vaguely similar to the fighting game community. Both genres have their feet in what I'd consider high skill cap and expression type of gameplay. Where as ultrakill is relatively new, the fighting game community has been around for quite a while and have had a chance to mature* (I say that with a bit of salt, and if you're part of the community you'd know why). Most fighting game enthusiast understand that, for the most part, people who join aren't trying to do the most optimal combo strings, break through a block string, or slam their head against a would-be-wall of an opponent rated high in their area. They want to have fun playing whatever character that calls to them and do it stylishly. The main issue with the ultrakill community, from what I understand in your video, is that we just need to chill. The people who want to get better, who want to learn how to chain coin for 60 damage on minos, who want to one shot maurices and mindflayers, they'll come on their own. We don't need to go up to people just walking through 2-3 for the first time and explain a well timed projectile boost will - nah. Let them have fun. When they ask questions, seek answers, that's when you can help whether by outright telling them or just a gentle nudge. Till then, just watch them experience what you did when you first picked up the game, because didn't you enjoy it your first time?

PRECISELY, Obviously there are a few more issues that people in the comments have highlighted, but my experience with Ultrakills less than great players is that they don't give players enough time to learn these things. I love teaching people new tech about the game, but I want them to voice some concerns that would cause me to bring it up. I might bring up a few core mechanics that I think they should know that the game doesn't really overtly tell them (projectile boosting seems to be the big one), but I also understand that those people will more than likely accidentally figure it out, then ask me wtf they just did, and then I can explain to them what they need to know. I think the backseating is the least offensive thing this community does, considering it is almost always with good intentions, but it's so prevalent that it also probably pushes the most amount of people away

heyo, this video is a really good explanation on the community as it is right now, both good and bad. as someone who has somehow went from the inner circle of the community (mainly speedrunning) to then see the more vocal gatekeep-y backseaters i find that the better you get at the game. usually the more chill and accepting you are, i really wish the bad actors would adopt the super supportive attitude the more prolific members of the community do. thanks to the extremely helpful folks in the speedrunning scene as well as my very lucky circumstance of finding my way in the best parts of the community first, im glad that i could become a part of it too, and meeting the people i saw that made me want to start getting better and sharing a space with all those awesome people is a unique and wonderful experience ive sadly never had with other communities. i hope this game gets the recognition it deserves and more people who mightve been turned off by the weird and frankly, way over-escalated drama and controversy that has permeated into the game’s reputation can maybe find a way to get to enjoy the game that we all love so much. great video :)

Hi, I just wanted to give my opinion as someone who is mostly known as an Ultrakill content creator. I'm a "no-damage" player, meaning I mostly focus my gameplay in completing games without receiving damage. I have completed every single level except for P-2 without receiving damage, and most of them I have also completed no-damage and only using melee or only using the base pistol (Mayo%). This may paint an incorrect picture of me, as an extremely toxic player who is always competitive, but this is actually far from the case. In my free time I mostly just enjoy a variety of games, just completing them to have the experience and leaving it like that. Mostly indie games but also classics or sometimes AAA games I'm interested about. For this reason, because I am in love with videogames in general and not just Ultrakill, I have seen a problem in this community that is for me the worst one, and no one talks about, and that is how over-protective the community is of the game. Ultrakill is a great game, but it is not perfect nor is it the only good way to design a game. Absolutely any critique about the game comes with a massive hate from part of the community. For example, Under the Mayo made a video about it. I don't agree with all of the points in the video but it does show some things that can be seen as a problem in Ultrakill's design, and even to this day he is ridiculed by the community, and people say really, REALLY mean things to him. But what most drives me mad about Ultrakill's community is how they compare it to other games (Yes, mostly DOOM Eternal) and always end up saying something like "DOOM bad ULTRAKILL good" when they are just different games. Ultrakill is all about style and the cool factor, which is easily visible and therefore is very easy to praise, but that is not all that defines a game, and this kind of comparison just show an incredible lack of understanding of videogame design. Cool is not always better, and for example DOOM Eternal which is the game it is most compared with does not have that much style, but that is not the point, it instead focuses on engagement, and is a game where you constantly feel at the edge, which in my opinion is something that ULTRAKILL can't achieve precisely because you are so cool and op that nothing really supposes a threat to you. Not every game needs to be ULTRAKILL to be a great game. With that said, no-damage is very cool and under apreciated part of the community if you don't mention us in your next video we are going to (just kidding do what you please).
@DJCerealSauce6455
@DJCerealSauce6455 10 ай бұрын
1: The no-hit thing is so fucking impressive I can't even begin to put it into words, I dont personally see that as you being "extremely toxic and competitive" and I honestly don't even think a lot of people would say that, they would look at your gameplay and go "what the fuck is this madman doing" 2: That is another huge part of the community's flaws, that I only noticed as I was nearing the end of the production of this video and trying to find hyperspecific examples to prove my point, and in retrospect, I think THIS might be the most damaging thing the community does, and might even be more prevalent than backseating, so I'm hoping more content creators will shed light on this issue because really, how many of those people don't know any better? It's hard to say 3: If I can find a way to get no-damage runs in as a talking point in a video, I'll be sure to mention you. I actually made a very small mention to it in my "ULTRAKILL has the BEST Soundtrack I've EVER heard" video script where I talked about learning more about Ultrakill through watching the worlds first hitless P-rank of P2 on Violent Thank you for this very well written comment :)

The psychology behind backseating is to keep the pace going (in other games, not Ultrakill), but also cause most streamers will play Ultrakill once. I get it, discovering at your pace is fun, but we really want others to experience same joy learning of new tech or secret, they add a lot to the experience, and imo the real charm that differentiates Ultrakill from many games. Those things are impossible to find on your own on 1st playthrough and we want streamers to finish Ultrakill with as much impact and understanding why it's great as possible. I really want people to ride on demons as a surfing board in Devil May Cry 3, so I am rather guilty 😂. I think better solution is not to outright stop backseating but establish clear rules of communication or a social contract: if streamer doesn't want backseating, make it clear by pinning the rules. Rest of people in chat generally will comply. A smart method to avoid being spoiled is say when chat recognizes a spoiler and signal it to a streamer, most likely by spamming emoji. 1 streamer did that and that way she avoided them, pretty smart I would say.
@abylaiashken2611
@abylaiashken2611 11 ай бұрын
In some cases backseating is acceptable, so a streamer can point out what they don't mind being spoiled on. Again, free ride in DMC3 and pole play in mission 3, those are fun little mechanics which are easy to miss. But if a streamer manages to perform them since it's not hard like Royal Guard or Jump Canceling it should be okay and you got to see their reaction to those mechanics.

Finished watching the video... Firstly: YOOOO! MY COMMENT APPEARED!!!!! (LOL) so what i would do is go and show support and gratitude for the videos and give some COMPREHENSIVE advice and feedback, in the end i believe this young man's first time experience with the game may have been enriched... anyways i don't even remember why i went off onto this tangent but the point is that this video is very valuable and appreciated, and i wish you a good weekend

I'd like to mention a problem that you didn’t, which I think is similar to the backseating problem. It's most obvious through KZbin comments and stream chats, which is my main form of interaction with the Community. *An absurdly massive portion of the community is seemingly incapable of original thought.* That is a really harsh way to phrase it, but it's really accurate to my frustration. There is not a single playthrough on this site that isn’t flooded with identical comments about lore speculation (I swear to god, there is not a single person in this community who hasn't heard "ooh did you know the lore implies that V1 was specifically built to kill earthmover?"), or random unsolicited tech, or endlessly recycled jokes. I swear I have yet to see a playthrough that doesn't have several people in the chat or comments just quoting a joke from a Max0r video as though they thought of it, as though everyone else hasn't already seen it. A heavy portion of the community rewards stale memes and rote repetition of jokes. It really overshadows the genuinely new and creative things made by genuinely talented people. My speculation is that ultrakill players all want to be special and smart and knowledgable, and they think they’ve found a way to be so through Ultrakill. Hence the absolute plague of backseating and unsolicited techsplanations, or unsolicited dumping about lore speculation (including spoilers). They all want to be seen as the smart one who knows everything about the game. They also want to be seen as funny, so they repeat the same stale jokes that people have liked before. Recitiation doesn't make you smart or funny, and doing it without understanding context makes you look both dumb and unfunny.
@DJCerealSauce6455
@DJCerealSauce6455 8 ай бұрын
It’s wild to think that I actually fall into this category but by complete accident. If someone tells me a funny joke I will incidentally end up transfiguring that joke multiple times and in multiple different ways to keep the spirit of the original joke intact, but making it fresh in its own way. Lore speculations are one of the biggest driving forces of the music related videos that I make, but I’ve been able to take a unique approach to the lore by FEELING it rather than strictly reading it from others, but I’m the exception here, so I see where the issues like that arise here. I’ve also never seen that Max0r video because I’m afraid to uncover how many of the jokes I’ve heard about ultrakill are regurgitated from that
