Adore this movie, lovely little bridge between Tiga and Dyna, the moments between Rena and Daigo are really sweet and the Ultra battles are hype. The credits using the final use of Take Me Higher brings a tear to the eye.

The movie is pretty good. Tiga killing that little girl and having the red balloon floating up is a scene that you would never get in this day in age. The movie had a story that was worth telling. Not something I can say for the Dyna and Gaia flick...which those felt like hour long episodes. Ultra movies are such a hit and miss sort of thing. For every Tiga Odyssey or Cosmos 3, you get a Zearth or Ultraman Story. And most of the modern day movies are not even movies. they are barely and hour long and feel like just another story to add to that Ultra's respective series.

I'm excited for when you do your Ultra Retrospective of The Next and Nexus. I got to know the Ultra franchise thanks to The Next, because I remember when I was a kid, I got the movie in a DVD rental store, and I liked so much of that movie, that I would visit sometimes the store just to rent that movie and watch it again. And I finally got to watch Nexus during the Covid-19 pandemic, because it was available in Crunchyroll, along with other Ultra shows, like Orb and Gaia (I just manage to watch Nexus and Orb, because after some time, all the Ultra shows were removed). I'm very glad that I give Nexus a chance and watch it, it is one of my top favorite Ultra shows. I remember after I have finished watching it, I wanted to know people opinions on the show, I even asked in one of your Community Post about it. And sometime after, I saw that Nexus wasn't very well received by the public, which I think it is a shame, I think it could have a potential. I wanted that Tsuburaya did a other Ultra show with something similar to Nexus, but since it wasn't well received (plus Ultra shows nowadays seems to be more friendly to the juvenile public to watch), I think that will be almost impossible to happen.

The artistic visuals, special effects, and cinematography of the movie are certainly praiseworthy. However, it should be noted that the movie's plot structure, written by Keiichi Hasegawa, clearly conflicts with the TV series' settings devised by Masakazu Migita and the novel settings crafted by Chiaki J. Konaka. The situation being referred to here is that the movie portrays the main characters, including those from the original TV series, with inconsistent personalities and character development. This is particularly evident in the relationship between Daigo and Rena, who, in the series, had a well-developed and stable relationship by the end. However, in the movie, their relationship suddenly and inexplicably breaks down due to the intervention of Carmilla. In the series, Daigo confesses his true identity to Rena, and they work together to face the future. However, in the movie, they refuse to talk to each other because of interference from unknown forces. Additionally, Rena's goal of becoming a pilot, which was an important aspect of her character in the original series, is intentionally abandoned in the movie. Furthermore, the character of Ultraman Tiga in the movie has a blank past, and the clear process of the downfall of the ancient civilization presented in the movie contradicts the TV series. In terms of continuity and configuration, this movie has actually created a serious conflict with the timeline and world-building of the series.
@s9yadvent Жыл бұрын
Rena doesn't talk to Daigo because she originally thought Daigo was cheating on her and she's already a pilot technically. The backstory of Tiga is actually before the events referenced in Tiga's backstory of the TV series.
@mrmarkertw Жыл бұрын
@@s9yadvent I think a clear explanation might make the point being raised better: Another focus of "THE FINAL ODYSSEY" movie is the relationship between Dawu and Lina. The director intended to depict the clear love between the two in the final episodes of the TV series, but the result presented in the movie is different from that. The most important point at issue is Daigo's identity. In the series, Daigo is merely a person who happens to inherit the ancient Ultra gene, which means he can transform into a being that is both light and human. Although he gains the power of Tiga, he is also a purely human existence, and the plot emphasizes his human nature on several occasions. Therefore, after transforming, Daigo is qualified to possess "human rationality and thinking." He can change the future of humanity from within, without resorting to the intervention of another race's identity. However, in "THE FINAL ODYSSEY," the character "Daigo" is directly added as a "reincarnator" with a bloodline binding, rather than just being the "Inheritance of Light" as in the original series. The above reason also aligns with the presentation in the movie, and it explains why in the film, Camilla doesn't directly use the name "Tiga" but instead calls him by his real name, Daigo. The illusion of Camilla that Daigo sees in the beginning of the movie is actually caused by his memories before reincarnation. Other information, such as the interview Risaku Kiridoshi with the scriptwriter, Keiichi Hasegawa, confirms this point. He responded to similar questions by saying, "I think he was originally a young man related to Yuzare, who was lured by the power of darkness but returned to the side of light. And Dawu, who is a modern human with the same genes, is his reincarnation."
@s9yadvent Жыл бұрын
@@mrmarkertw Yeah the movie introduces a lot of retcons to the Tiga mythos changing how we think about the character, but it's for the better. You can still combine both backstories into one. Daigo is a reincarnation but he also still has the direct DNA of Tiga making him magically and scientifically connected to Tiga
@mrmarkertw Жыл бұрын
In the original series, Rena's character is shaped over a long period of time by her environment and experiences, and her emotions naturally surface as the story progresses. She displays an active personality, proud of her "top pilot ability" and does not abandon her career beliefs even when peace arrives. Her resonance with Daigo in the end adds even more depth and meaning to their love story. However, the film goes against this portrayal. In the movie, Rena not only expressed in her conversation with Daigo that "suddenly she felt that the time she piloted GUTS Wing 1 and fought on the front line was just a dream." This statement contradicts the original idea of being a GUTS team member and her original dream. Even when playing at the amusement park at night, her reaction to Daigo mentioning the name "Camilla" is not like the Rena in the series who would have been concerned and worried about Daigo's abnormal behavior. Instead, she questions Daigo with a full sense of distrust and anger, and even resists going to the front line of battle, making her character's personality arrangement quite strange. Even though she hopes that Daigo will be safe, this behavior is not something that Rena's character, shaped by the TV series, would do. In the latter half of the film, Rena's conviction to fight is reinforced after witnessing Daigo's determination, which somewhat addresses the aforementioned flaw. While it can be appreciated as a great reference to the Tiga series elements, Although the expansiveness of the Giants of Darkness setting can be appreciated and admired, it actually conflicts with the 1996 TV series on which it is based, making it difficult to reconcile this film's placement in the official canon. Therefore, trying to reconcile it would be futile.
@mrmarkertw Жыл бұрын
@@s9yadvent However, even though having Daigo reincarnated to establish a miraculous and scientific connection with Tiga, let's not forget that in the original series, a character was introduced to inform us that Daigo's traits are not that unique: Keigo Masaki. Masaki also possesses the genes of the ancient civilization just like Daigo, and this character's presence was deliberately created by the writer of episode 44, Chiaki J. Konaka, to contrast with Daigo. Masaki is a functional character in the TV series, who questions Daigo's qualifications as an Ultraman from an external perspective - "The DNA of ancient civilizations is not special." - and perfecting the role of Daigo. In Chiaki J. Konaka's words, he does not like the "chosen one" setting. Therefore, he is very opposed to the idea of Daigo having special genetic traits. Therefore, Masaki's main purpose is actually to expand the explanation of the rare "genetic factor of the Giant of Light" as something ordinary. This is where his creative interest lies. - Risaku Kiridoshi : Initially, it seemed like Daigo was supposed to have some kind of special trait, but in reality, he was just like any other human. Chiaki J. Konaka: Because I hate the idea of the "chosen one." So, through this more subtle detail, it actually highlights more contradictions in The Final Odyssey's reflection on this aspect.

In terms of pacing, trigger did it poorly. Tiga somewhat did it better, comparing between the 2 series, characters progression can be debated. In ending I might choose Trigger for this one.
@GaiusIntrepidus10 ай бұрын
Yeah sure I'll do it. Trigger barely did shit with the concepts it was given, wasting literally a majority of them or at the very least didn't even execute any of them well. Characters are either wasted or just bland, Daigo may not be the most fleshed-out protagonist (personality-wise) but holy shit at least he feels like a person compared Kengo whose problem is that his entire personality is just cartoonish at worst. Let's not even get to GUTS vs GUTS-Select, it's such an easy competition as those from GUTS have way better synergy and dynamics with each other, compared to GUTS-Select who feel like living props.
@harishirfan21005 ай бұрын
All I can see in trigger is that they only just focusing on 2 characters the most. Kengo and Yuna. I know they want to learn about their past but they can't just make like an entire series just them want to learn their past. Tiga at least introduced the characters and show some back story for each characters. Plus tiga just the goated of Ultraman. Without him, we will still have Ultraman that doesn't even transform into different look. Just same red colour
