Hi Neil , we love your videos , please keep up your reviews. We have watched your channel grow exponentially. After watching your videos and others regarding Class B's manufacturers. We believe that "Pleasureway" is by far the "BEST" manufacturer of camper vans in the North America. We understand that PW is slow to make changes to their product line until they fully insure that quality remains the highest priority in the industry. A few changes we would love to see is the elimination of propane and generator. Also possibly a larger wet bath for us bigger people LOL and the make a model that is four season capable. thank you for all your insights. ps , your three part video on PW industries tour really gave us tremendous insite in Dean's commitment to being the best . He should be very proud of there accomplishments. Anyway take care and all the best. BT

Neil, thank you for an awesome video. I think you cover all the basics really well. I have a couple of questions and comments: 1) The Revel does look fantastic and reasonably priced. However, as noted by many (e.g., Wings and Wheels Alaska) the insulation is not as good as it could be (at least the inside of the back doors/gates). 2) Why isn't it possible for manufacturers to use systems that could withstand freezing without catastrophic failure? I understand that a frozen water line would not be FUNCTIONAL but if the materials could be elastic (water expands by ~10% upon freezing) then the concern with winterizing would be a lot less. 3) On the Revel, is it advisable to leave the heater on even if you are not in the van? (for example if you went skiing all day, or are visiting friends and have a warm house to live in for a few days and the Revel is parked). Thank you again, I find your videos very enlightening.

Neil I have always liked your reviews.When I first bought my first motorhome which I’m in right now all I wanted was diesel and low miles. So I bought a Fleetwood pace arrow diesel with 80,000 miles on 1993 model. That all worked out for me perfectly. The woman said that I bought it when I first bought my first motorhome which I’m in right now all I wanted was diesel and low miles. So I bought a Fleetwood pace arrow diesel with 80,000 miles on 1993 model. That all worked out for me perfectly. The woman I bought it from her husband had just died and she didn’t know how to drive it or anything it was in her driveway. So I backed it out and drove it over here and she told me that the last time her and her husband used it everything worked. Well I don’t know how to do anything and now I do but I didn’t then. And I was afraid to turn on the gas because a friend of mine burned up in his motorhome somehow. So anyway I’ve had it now for about a year and all the sudden I’m coming into some money that I’ve been focused on getting her a long time and it’s not enough money to completely buy a brand new B+ class motorhome which will be shorter than my 36 foot. Anyway I want to upgrade some things like do a electric stove top, convection microwave oven, and get rid of my perfectly functioning three way refrigerator and put in a compressor refrigerator and perhaps even get it from the Amish That make a compressor conversion kit for an existing refrigerator. And I already bought a instant hot water heater. But everything works anyway I enjoy your stuff man thank you very much for being so honest and straightforward

Hmmm... heat rises. I wonder why nu decided to put the heat elements above the water lines. All my lines are internal so I open cabinets and panels while using the van, and keep the heat on, even parked at home, during shoulder season weather. Gives a number of additional weeks of water use. I think the most important point you made was right at the beginning when you pointed out that the only problem with using them in extreme climates is that you don’t have fresh running water. Ultimately, that’s not a very big deal because you can still cook and sleep and drive in it.
@Ultramobility5 жыл бұрын
yep agree completely. you can actually still use the sinks you just have to use jugs of water and flush with plenth of anti-freeze. i did this in the dead of winter in quebec and it worked fine.

Hi Neil, great job as usual--one point about the Espar in the Revel--I believe it only runs off the top third of the diesel tank--it will shut off after that because apparently they don't want you to get stranded somewhere. They may have changed that for the 2020, I'm just not sure. But otherwise, agree totally about the Revel's winter-worthiness. Note--I don't own a Revel but I've been monitoring the FB Revel group for over a year now. Must folks say they are toasty warm in the winter with the Espar.

Information on features and benefits for winter camping this video take high marks. I have learned a lot and now have a few questions. Has anyone done a thermal imaging on insulated winterized camper Vans? I had my house done a few years ago and it found problems that normal inspection missed. Also the material you highlighted in the photo of the exposed insulation has a very low R value. I purchased some and did some testing. Due to the fact that I’m not sure what manufacturer they used in that van i really can’t comment on it’s R value but the material I used was very low. That said it better then not having anything. A industrial standard needs to be put in place so the public can get some real answers on how will there van is protected. We have that now with fridges, not sure what the cover but we need something that will protect buys from camper vans manufacturers that have misleading marketing material. The other problem that I see is the installation of lithium battery subsystems. Compared to Europe Canada is lacking in regulations covering safety features. It now appears van manufacturers can install almost anything they want without having to follow any government guidelines. Can you check that out for me? Lithium batteries as you are aware can’t be charged when cold. The charging system needs to be careful designed for safety, is that being done? What certification is required? I could go on, but I leave that for now. Thanks for doing this review I think more videos like this one is needed to educate future buyers.
@Ultramobility5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dale. Thanks for sharing all this great information. It’s true lithium batteries should not be charged when their internal temperature is below freezing. The best manufacturers have insulated and heated lithium battery compartments and a battery management system that monitors the temperature and only charges the lithium batteries when it’s above freezing.
@NewAgeDIY5 жыл бұрын
Ultramobility / thanks for the feedback, when you have time can you address the other questions I posted? I really would like to see information on regulations that manufacturers need to follow. Of course they will be different in Canada from the US market. My interest is in purchasing a unit. Thanks again for your insight.

I own a revel. Here's the catch. When you turn on the heater, it draws down the battery a lot faster than you would like. I don't feel that comfortable running it the entire night. I think it would drop down the AGMs to about 50% by morning. yeah if you are plugged in to shore, no problem. The diesel doesn't run down very fast at all. But if your boondocking, I'd be nervous to run that heating system at full throttle for more than four or five hours.I don't understand why running a diesel heater is so battery intensive. Kind of defeats the purpose.

Peter - thank you so much for sharing your experience as an actual Revel owner! this comment is super helpful to potential buyers. I imagine that the battery drain is the run the blower and perhaps the igniter in the d5? not sure but it's a great point that you make.
@peterdods4255 жыл бұрын
I've been told it has something to do with the circulation pumps. I really don't know. I'm tempted just to let it run all night one of these days just to see where the battery is when I wake up. I would imagine, like a refrigerator, that once the cab hits a certain level, it doesn't drives much energy. Maybe? I don't know. First two hours seems to take up a lot of juice.

Hey Neil, Good content for consideration by all. I personally love travelling and sightseeing in the colder times of the year. Yellowstone, Alaska, lots of winter fun. Cold for me means less crowded conditions as well as avoiding problems related to a heat stroke 50 years ago from an unplanned 1 year vacation in Vietnam. The older I get, the hotter the weather gets, the sicker I get. But there is "too cold". My memories of too cold; cracked engine block because by inability to run my diesel engine because my fuel tank heater quit. I don't think a Revel would have saved me. I was in Fairbanks, AK on business and it was cold. Freight trucks run 24/7 or get parked in garages when not driving. Back in the early 80's my family and I got snowed in at Yosemite Valley. Not really cold but lots of snow. 1 snow shovel, 4 hub caps and hours of digging. Chains and 4 wheel drive are only so good. Basically, I like Dean Rumpel's explanation. There's no such thing as a winter proof class B. Most people are heading to the warmer places. From my experience I've even learned even hotels and motels have their limits. The discussion is amusing though. Keep up the good work.

@broomhandle81329 ай бұрын
Winnebago EKKO has a portable thermal cab partition adding extra heat insulation to the cab (the windows of the cab leak the heat easily). I've been frozen in a class C RV in a 20F night (even with heater on, but the battery ran down fast, and the NP Campground doesn't allow generator and dry camping only). How effective is the cab partition keeping the living space warm?

But I did not even think about 4 season RV at the time. My next RV will definitely be 4season. Winnebago Rebel is tops at this time. Is there a shop that will do a good job of after market 4 season equiping? Buying a new RV every few years is way too expensive. Sliding backwards on ice must have been terrifying! Ive been sking an watched a Porsche Carrera slide into a Mercedes SL. We also had a situation where 5cguys got out of the vehicles and spun 10 cars including my van around by hand when a bunch of cars got stuck on an icee road. But sliding backwards in a RV?!?! Very interesting video. You hit most of my list for 4 season RV's. Insulated/heated water tanks/lines, 4 wheel drive, well insulated van body, gasoline engine instead of diesel. The one thing a lot of RV manufacturers miss is the doors when in comes to insulation. Your first example showing the insulated van body has exposed metal on the doors. I do have a concern with the heating for the Revel's water tanks. In my opinion those heating water lines should be on the bottom of the tank since heat rises. The Revel's system heats the top allowing, in extreme cold, for the bottom freezing. I have to wonder why no one has a system using the Truma aqua go to heat your fresh water to around 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Kind of like a household water heater does. Something you can turn on in cold weather and have off during warm weather. Seems like it wouldn't be real hard to do. Just need a return line to the water tank and a temperature sensor in the tank. As for my wanting a gasoline engine in the coach. I was a truck driver for many years in Ohio winters and have seen even treated fuel gel up in extreme cold weather, by extreme I mean below zero for days on end. We hauled milk from the farm to the dairies so we had to go out every day since milk cows don't ever take a day off. It go so bad one winter we had to pull our trucks into a heated building and drain the diesel tanks and run on kerosene, for a week, to avoid the gelling issue. This was back in the late 80's when you didn't have all the fuel regulations you have now and we could do this legally.

The Coachmen Galleria 24A floorplan has the 30 Gallon freshwater tank inside the coach and also uses the Truma heating system to heat all areas of the coach including the rear underbed luggage area and because the Freshwater tank is inside the coach all Freshwater lines are also inside the coach. Dump station stuff is not heated though allthough the macerator hose is housed in a another tube so provides a sort of double insulation.

Sliding down on a hill is a traction issue = you need winter tires. AWD vs FWD vs RWD in this case is irrelevant. You might not get up the hill with RWD, yes, but you shouldn't slide down - that's purely a tire function to grip and hold vehicle position. If you slid down and sideways - that tells me your tires aren't proper dedicated winter tires.

I don’t think they’re going to be building on the gas chassis sprinter because it may not be powerful enough… I’m not sure if that’s the reason though.

What's your favorite brand (for quality) for a 9-seater "travel van" (like the Airstream Interstate Lounge) - Pleasure Way doesn't make those.

I wish that panoramic RV from panoramic would get here already. Since your last profiling interview with them, things of been super quiet. Nothing on their website, no new updates, no new reviews… Come on Panoramic. That vehicle looks sweet and I’ll be ready to visit colder climate with such premium insulation and that layout.

Why isn't it possible for manufacturers to use systems that could withstand freezing without catastrophic failure? I understand that a frozen water line would not be FUNCTIONAL but if the materials could be elastic (water expands by ~10% upon freezing) then the concern with winterizing would be a lot less.
