Why not use the "dog whistle" mod? Its really nice to have your dog in the fights without having to sacrifice a companion slot.

Hey there! Its called "Extra Dog Slot" and it works just fine, yes, but I'm not using it for the very reason you mentioned - having 5th permanent companion negatively affects the game balance, making the fights too easy often. Just my personal choice.
