My wife is an ultra runner and I’ve spent a ton of time at races. The early part of her story is 100% believable. People get injured and catch a car ride to the next aid station. Aid station workers - who aren’t race officials usually - will habitually do everything they can to get runners back on the course. And you often don’t have a choice. It’s a 50-mile point to point race… there’s often no choice but to keep going. And the runners are often incoherent and don’t do sensible things like turn in their number. Of course, the story falls apart when she actually crosses the finish line, accepts the third place trophy, etc. No matter how tired or incoherent you don’t do that by accident.

“I didn’t want to compete anymore…I just wanted to drop out, but I was told I’d regret it if I didn’t finish. So I went ahead and continued running until the end of the race. After I realized I finished in third place, I graciously accepted the medal because I didn’t want the organizers to feel bad that they made a mistake by giving me the medal.”

Not sure what happened in the end, but I believe she is also a doctor and last news article I read on this here (UK) mentioned that her being a doctor was being called into question because it requires you to be “of good character”. Very strange behaviour which has ruined her reputation as a great runner. Cheaters will cheat I guess.

Zakrzewski qualified in medicine at the University of Cambridge ( MB BChir 1999).[16] She works as a general practitioner in Woy Woy, New South Wales, Australia.[17][18] Cheating at a sport is NOT a criminal offence. You think a doctor playing football and getting a red card would be banned? Get a grip please.
@Davvg
@Davvg 5 ай бұрын
@@Biffo1262I would not trust a doctor who knowingly cheats in checkers and paints it as a “misunderstanding” (despite making no attempt to rectify the situation) let alone something highly competitive, difficult, and highly publicized. It doesn’t mean she cheated her degree or that she should have her licence taken. It DOES show that her judgement is questionable and some (including me) would say it makes her seem untrustworthy. You’ve no doubt noticed there are many doctors in Australia and most of them don’t get themselves embroidered in any sort of public scandals. It could be the one bad thing she does in her life or it could even be a mental health episode, but she’s opened herself up to scrutiny regardless. But aside from that, the person you’re condescending to is making a factual statement about something they read in an article, without even giving their opinion on it. In the future, please avoid making strawmen arguments to debate people who aren’t even arguing, we’d all appreciate it. thanks!

People in the comments need to realise this is an ultra long race. Your brain is definitely not gonna be working properly at the end of it so it's understandable that she would be quite out of it and not cogent enough to not accept the trophy. The thing that is less excusable though is that she didn't flag it up in the following days. However i can imagine that she was probably unsure about what to do and it's the type of thing where the longer you leave it the harder it is to bring it up. Just giving her the benefit of the doubt. I think she deserves a bit more slack than people have been giving her.
