1:37. No. The S.O.P. for U/S testing is to dab the job, not the transducer. It (in this case) doesn't matter, but get into good habits... Why are you using a separate calibration block, when there's one right there, built-into the meter? No mention of different material velocities? I was wondering if you can enter a velocity manually?

5690 m/s is the speed of sound for the 304 stainless steel calibration block. Apparently I am not the only person who has noticed this error. It is amazing that it has not been responded to. Perhaps this video was produced quickly to promote the sale of the device with no technical understanding. Also, There is a 4 mm calibration block on the device, you don't need to use a separate one. It is sad, I thought I did not understand the device at all yet the instructional video understands much less.

Exactly
@david-tracy2 жыл бұрын
I think the 4mm calibration block that's built onto the device is steel. If you wanted to measure a different type of metal I believe you'd want to calibrate the gauge w/ w/e metal it is that u want to measure. Also, 5690m/s might only be true for 304 stainless steel when stainless steel is at a particular temperature.

I am looking for an ultrasonic thickness gauge. I need one that will work on steel pipe & tubing. I will never need to measure anything over 1 inch thickness. SOMETIMES, I will be dealing with material that has already been painted. I prefer a meter that shows imperial instead of metric, although I can covert it afterwards if necessary but it would be easier if it was imperial to start with.
@david-tracy2 жыл бұрын
It can do what you're looking for except for the 'paint' part... I'm still trying to find out whether it can measure the thickness of painted steel myself.... Suppose it couldn't measure painted steel accurately though. I wonder what would instead get measured if you tried. If it measured everything except the paint, then I would think that we would be able to use that value that the ultrasonic thickness gauge returned to us & add it to w/e value would be returned to us from the use of a "paint thickness checker". .... or maybe there's just 1 good gauge that can measure the steel w/ the paint haha

Anyone please tell... . Why we use gel or grease while measuring thickness ????
@david-tracy2 жыл бұрын
the gel / grease is a coupling agent that helps couple the gauge's transducer to w/e material its measuring the thickness of. It helps transmit the ultrasonic wave between/through the transducer & material that's being measured.

can this gauge measure wall thickness in curves, like the inner side of the large tube? like if I had to measure from inside out of the tube. I have very unregular parts, with small radius but I still have to measure the thickness on these radius. can it measure the thickness in the radius of a bended steel sheet?
@david-tracy2 жыл бұрын
depends on the curvature radius of the metal (it must be at least 10mm... but I think that might only pertain to steel). also, the wall's thickness must be at least 3mm (also not sure if that only applies to steel).

So this would work well for measuring the metal thickness across the face of a titanium golf driver or would titanium require a different instrument?
@david-tracy2 жыл бұрын
I would think so since titanium's sound velocity is within the range of the meter. It would also depend on how thick the titanium is.The manual says it can measure steel that is as thin as 1.2mm and as thick as 225mm, but that's for steel... and the manual I have doesn't mention a range for anything other than steel unfortunately.

Erosion!!!!!? That's one smart tool...lol EROSION...!
@WoodenSocks2 жыл бұрын
There are many issues with the video but I don't see this as one of them. Erosion = wall thinning due to abrasion which can be caused by many things including steam and/or water. A UT thickness gauge (when used properly and not as demoed in this video) should be able to detect thinning caused by such a thinning mechanism (by way of comparison with expected wall thickness). It would be less able to measure thinning from corrosion, as the corrosion layers would confuse the signal.
