Your restoration videos are amazing. What strikes me as most important, and educational, is that your videos, unlike some others, are truly a "Family" project. Each member of your family share in the restoration, and that you always show Jack as an important part of the ongoing adventure. To 'Jack' I say 'high five kid' you are awesome! I can only imagine how proud your parents are of you. ... Your friend in Cody, Wyoming

After a 2 hour drive he wasn't going to give up so went do to the nearest supermarket and bought some KY jelly. Oh boy the countless hours ultrasound I have done as part of my work. As a rough rule of thumb I gridded out at 100mm squares on the kind of surface you have. There's a lot of technique involved but for what it's worth using vet lubricant or, ahem, personal lubricant works well as a cheap couplant as are China graph pencils for marking up (or paint pens). Also as a rough idea 1mm of steel makes approx 10mm of rust.
@miru713 жыл бұрын
Someone wrote about welding a patch onto an existing sheet. This cannot be done. This is against yacht building regulations. One sheet may only overlap the other a little. There is a suitable formula for this. L = 1,5g + 1,5 [mm] L-overlap width of two plates g = thickness of the repair sheet. In the fall, I removed the mooring poles from the deck, which were welded to the sheet. There was a lot of rust underneath. You said you want to sandblast everything after welding - and you do! But ... if you can rent a sandblaster for a day, sand the spots you will weld. Only then repair the plating and sand the entire hull at the end. There is one drawback to cleaning the repair site with an angle grinder. When grinding, the tiny spots of rust can be covered with healthy metal. Yes - steel is malleable. :-)
@SailingMelody3 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely! And don’t worry we won’t be overplating anything! The idea makes my skin crawl! I used to fix up cars and back in the 80’s there was a fashion for welding floor pans and sills into car bodies by overplating the panels and it used to drive me crazy the number of times I’d cut out a rotten floor pan in someone’s car to find the remnants of the previous floor pan underneath it....... and they wondered why the new one only lasted a couple of years before that rotted through 🤦♂️ We can’t rent a sandblasted as all sandblasting work in this yard has to be done by the yard not by ourselves or anyone else but hey Ho, their yard their rules

@motorboatselmaiii1093 жыл бұрын
While it's fine to measure the general thickness of the hull all around as you have done, it doesn't really give you the real image of the hidden flaws of the hull. The danger lies in the small corroded spots, and the way to measure them is to grind them with an angle grinder until you reach the bottom of all the small pits of rust, and then measure the thickness. That will tell you the real thickness. You also have to inspect the inside of the hull in order to find the spots where it has rusted from the inside, and then measure from the outside in those places. I used to do this kind of work when I was young, so I know what I'm talking about.
@SailingMelody3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree hence the name of the video, we also say that only tells us the areas where have measured. We are exposing and inspecting the internal steel. We also have our own thickness tester which doesn't read through paint so if there are areas that are concerning we can take of the paint and test 😁
@fireantsarestrange3 жыл бұрын
I would agree.. but id still just hit it with a stick. haha
@motorboatselmaiii1093 жыл бұрын
@@SailingMelody It's nice to have a thickness tester at hand, it makes it a lot easier to do it right :-) After all, the real thickness is the thickness at the bottom of the deepest pit - I have seen small rust spots on 8 mm steel plate where the thickness in the deepest rust pit was only 1 mm. But as long as you can access it from the inside, it's no big deal to replace a few pieces of steel plate in a boat like yours. I don't know how much experience you have in working with steel hulls, but if you don't already know it, here is a couple of safety ground rules: It's important to make the corners round (>= r30) when you cut holes in the middle of a steel plate. This is to avoid cracks forming from the sharp corners. Sharp corners can be used when the cut starts from a seam. It will be a fine boat when you are done with it :-)

Does it have an image or only a numerical reading?
@SailingMelody3 жыл бұрын
The one we were using in this video shows both and it shows the paint thickness too.
@paloureiro3 жыл бұрын
When there is air between the probe and the material you are scanning, the images will be defficult to obtain. If the image was good, you can double check the displayed thickness value. Maybe where there is epoxy there are trapped air bubbles that prevent the US penetration.

Eyes and ears and touch are often the best tools we have. As a paramedic I have a saying “Look at the patient not the monitor” it’s easy to get distracted by a reading on a machine which says something which is in opposition to how the patient actually looks. I can a lot from initial visual observations of the patients position, muscle tone, skin colour and then a quick check of the patients wrist will tell me about their heart rate and skin temperature and watching them speak to me will tell me about their respiratory rate, rhythm, volume and effort before I’ve attached a single piece of equipment to measure anything. So I have a pretty good idea of what numbers I’m expecting from the monitor equipment and that means I don’t tend to panic when I see a weird looking set of numbers.
