Nirvikar (Nirvi) Dahiya, MD, a Radiologist in the Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic, performs a demonstration of an ultrasound hip examination.
After discussing proper positioning, transducers used, and hip anatomy, an anterior examination was shown viewing the hip capsule, psoas tendon, bursal space, rectus femoris tendon, sartorius, and iliac spine. Focused exam was done of the iliopsoas tendon. The transducer was changed to better view the sartorius and the anterior superior and anterior inferior iliac spines. Attention was then turned to the lateral view. Anatomy was discussed and the gluteus minimus and medius tendons viewed. Attention was first focused on the gluteus minimus and then the gluteus medius. The iliotibial band was then examined, viewing the bursal space. The video ends with a discussion of which ultrasound approach to use for specific complaints.
