OMG, you just solved my hip problem!!! Thank you so much!!! Women are taught to keep their knees together, at least I was. I was unconsciously walking with about 4" between my ankles, and I have wide hips. Also, I have a hip injury that caused me to put my knees closer together when getting up or sitting down. When you said no adduction, I caught my unconscious walking pattern. The pain stopped in one day!!! I have done all the exercises and was still unable to stop the pain. Thank you so much!!! WOW!!! I have a patient at the moment with quite irritable lateral hip pain (does have the inflamed bursae) but is also suffering from sciatica/lumbar radicular pain that is set off by all gluteal exercises. Very hard to manage!

That's what I have. I had acl surgery where they used the hamstring. The hamstring tore after the surgery and had done physical therapy and was cleared.

I mucked up my hip by using a thick memory foam pillow between my thighs to sleep and didn't realize I was spraining my hip tendons on the distal head when laying on my side - literally crippled myself before realizing what was the cause. Months of agony. Not only do you want to watch out for abduction of the thigh, but also any sleeping positions that leave you waking up feeling like your joint is dislocated!

Well, that both explained the problem and how to stop it. Because of back problems, I lie down (recliner sofa) , rather than sit in the evenings and usually cross my legs at the ankles. When I get up, there's hip pain on both sides. Sometimes, and it was the case while watching this, I drop my legs down each side of the raised part of the recliner but hadn't correlated that position with the lack of pain when I got up. Now I do!

My hip pain is very peculiar.,in that it only hurts when I sit and very intense when rising from the sitting position It’s the right outer of the Hip and pain radiates towards the Knee outer and not the inside . I have no problem in walking, bending or lifting . Incidentally I fell a week before and landed on my Right Buttock/Hip and did not experience any discomfort the following day or two. Ice pack helps. Appreciate a response.

It could be a nerve irritation or compression issue. Maybe the sciatic or peroneal nerve. Don't take my word for it though.

Thanks for this. I have lateral hip pain and periformis pain. Can you explain why I have both? I think massive weaknesses, unstable (crooked) pelvis (I’m tighter on the right side-pain on the left,) and sleeping too much on my right side-which let my left leg fall too far across the midline-are all to blame. Chiros and PTs unable to help. I want to strengthen but it triggers so much pain-especially after the fact because I get so tight.

Sounds like you may have tight piriformis and gluteus minor muscles. You can use a lacrosse ball to roll around the butt. If it gets extremely painful doing this, you have right gluteus minor muscle. You need to endure the pain for as long as you can. I haven't had piriformis problems, but there are videos on KZbin on how to roll out the piriformis.

You should see another therapist. Not all therapists are created equal. Doctors typically recommend you exercise to build up the muscles that support the hip. A good therapist can recommend what exercises you need to do.

Currently dealing with this issue, I have super flat feet, so flat to the point I pronate at my arches when I walk bare foot and with most shoes. Would this fallen arch pronation at the foot cause adduction up my leg which could lead to my lateral hip pain? Thanks

Hi Ruby, a lateral release is something normally reserved for the lateral knee and so shouldn’t have an impact on the lateral hip really…… I can understand someone making an argument that it does, but clinically I have rarely seen the connection actually materialising

My lateral hip pain occurs from tennis as it is my dominant hip turning pretty strong when I hit a forehand and I also do a strong hip turn when I serve, what do you think is main cause, I have good internal and external rotation of hip joint. My low back on same side of lateral hip gets sore as well.

Yes I can understand that perhaps the single leg control required to pivot and maintain stability on your irritable leg is a factor. We also know that 25-30% of people with low back pain also develop GTPS (gluteal tendinopathy). Wishing you all the best

I know this is about structural problems, but I was having such bad hip pain after resting/sitting that the first few steps I could hardly weight bear, mainly left hip, it eased the more I moved. Searched Dr Google and saw mild vit D deficiency can cause hip pain so took a bigger dose with Vit K2 and haven't had pain since... amazing.

@@EllaBella-76 Oh gosh I am so sorry you are going through this.... just a heads up, you need to take K2 with Vit D to help carry it to the bones, also magnesium, and some fatty meal as Vit D and K are fat solvable vitamins... do some research about what to take with Vit D and what not, to get best absorption possible.... good luck

Thank you so much for your videos, really hulpful. I have one question: in another video, you said the test of ober is not useful, bc the iliotibial band is not a muscle or tendon, but a fascia. So adduction in the hip with some extension, is not specific. In the contrary, here, you claim that the adduction or valgus stance might compressie the tendons at the site of the greater trochanter and causes gluteal tendinopathy. Hi! Yes correct… Obers test is not helpful when clinicians use it to diagnose a “tight ITB” because as you said, ITB is not a muscle and thus should rarely be considered as tight. However, this is different to gluteal tendinopathy because we are not looking to assess if ITB is tight, but instead are the gluteal tendons being compressed in adduction (not due to ITB tightness)

An orthopedic doc said he thinks it's coming from my hip joint as I have some degeneration. I've had it for years though. He said the pain can refer the lateral hip. I am not convinced at all. He wants me to get a coritisone shot. But I will not. I think he just wanted to find a dx. Is it possible the IHR exercises triggered it? I am doing the exercises you suggest, and It's doing better.

The point is on the greater trochanter, it's where the hip bone sticks out on the side. Place your finger on the side of your hip, twist your fod while standing and feel the hip bone push out on your fingers, that's where the bursa will be sore.
