As an American, I only heard this song because it would occasional play on the '80s hits station on Sirius XM when I worked in a small tech shop around 2012. I don't remember ever hearing it growing up in the '80s or '90s, but once I heard it a few times at work, I became obsessed. Now it's probably my favorite song from the 1980s.

This feels like such an underrated song that should be a classic. I'm sure it was pretty successful at the time (same as other Ultravox songs), but you don't hear it mentioned or played these days, despite it being so powerful and anthemic. You only ever hear 'Vienna' or (occasionally) 'Dancing with Tears in my Eyes.' So many bands are treated like one- or two-hit wonders when they had so many good songs.

I'm 22 and kinda feel a similar way about newer music. I listen to a wide variety of music from the 60's to now, and find the only good music from the last decade is mostly non-mainstream stuff, but it still doesn't come close to music like this. I was up late last night watching Rage (an Australian music video show), where they played this, some of their other songs, and an old interview with Chris Cross, likely due to his death last week.

Criminally underrated song. I first heard it in 1998(16 years after its release) and it stuck with me ever since: the deep internal conflict about wanting to believe but not having the evidence to convince oneself that God is real("faithless in faith, we must behold the things we see!"). Ultravox's lyrics are some of the deepest and most profound...and most cryptic of all bands.
@lambjab98329 ай бұрын
Your comment about wanting to believe in the existence of God questioning it's reality. You are not alone, but I just wanted to say that it is all true. It is the devil that is raising that question as it's most successful strategy calling it "a fairytale" and that it itself isn't real. You see the reason it does that is so you drop your defenses against it giving it cart blanche to step in and control your every thought, action. In order to stop it, you have to side with God, asking (pleading with Him to come into your heart a nd take over putting all your faith in Him that He has your best interest in mind a d that you love Him and to forgive you for your past transgressions. You see it's all about where we end up after this life is completed. The are only 2 choices, either in Heaven (Paradise) for Eternity, or The Lake of Fire (what's known as the 2nd death) as the former hell has been ended as all who were there escaped (why everything is so evil now here). There is no fence sitting, it's one or the other. I implore you to select the former. Hope that helps! 😇✝️

@frozenlionheart18546 ай бұрын
@@destinycole Thank you, and I am sorry to hear about the loss of your mother too, music can be so powerful and impressionable, I took after my mum quite a bit in that regard... In terms of likes and such.... And she was very young.... But life has ways of helping people destroy themselves....and for the longest time due to how my childhood was (and I wish I hadn't been the way I was) I put too much trust and faith into mum... And was blinded for too long and by the time I knew things it was too late in the long run...and I didn't know how to approach things either due to something else that happened when I was younger so I have to carry my fair share of guilt there too I wish I could say things have gotten easier, but well my mother wasn't the only thing I lost.... The following 9 months I lost pretty much what I classed as the rest of my direct family, but I'm still standing somehow, and I know I probably wouldn't be without the support of others.... I hope you have as much support as possible through friends and family and you take each day one day at a time, put yourself first when you need to.

The Safety Dance- Men Without Hats, Jammin- Bob Marley, Cocaine- Eric Clapton, Paris-latino- Bandolero, Red Red Wine- UB 40 ecc!!!

Yes, totally agree with you. They are one of my topbands aswell. Saw Midge Ure last May, it was great as always. For me he and Dave Gahan share the top spot of singers for me.

I was never really a fan of Ultravox after the John Foxx period, but this track is a beast! Come to think of it, they did some good stuff in the Midge Ure years...I think I'll have to listen again...

I was born a long time after the release, but I remember how popular the song was and how many times it was played in radio channels during the 90s. When I was in my parent's car, I listened to this song a lot and loved it back then as a 90's-kid. I recently heard it again and it warped me back into a long forgotten time where everything was easier and nicer for me.

Although I was born in 2001, I remember hearing this song quite a few times on the radio when I was really little. I never understood any of the lyrics, but the melody always seemed a little magical (for lack of a more fitting description) to me. Then I suddenly didn't hear it anymore for a while, and I forgot it ever even existed. Today I heard it for the first time in around 15 years. It randomly came on the radio that was playing at some burger joint. Almost immediatly, I felt like I was a little kid again, sitting in the backseat of my parents car on a long drive, dreaming of castles and dragons. Weird how I was born long after this song came out, and yet it gives me so much nostalgia.

That's a great story. Song from 1982. I'm not going to insult your intelligence by explaining the story of it. It's self explanatory. Maybe not too far from the truth either. Music stars pay the price the most...dying quite early in life, the vast majority of them.

The meaning of this song is the conflict between the desire of the proverbial heart to believe in a higher power and purpose and a skeptical mind that will not be convinced without tangible evidence. The crux of the song is the last verse "faithless in faith, we must behold the things we see!"
