IN MEMORIAM IAN JOHNSTONE (1967-2015) It is with heavy hearts we bring you news of the passing of Ian Johnstone: artist, agro-farmer, beekeeper, Coil affiliate and one-time Ulver collaborator. Dearest Ian, we will always remember and hold you in the highest regard. We are thankful for the moments we had. May you sail with the honeybees for ever. Our hearts go out to all of the bereaved, with deep sympathies to Daniel and Mikel and Serena, who are going through terrible times now. We mourn with you. Ulver, Oslo, July 10 2015. †

Ulver's main object is human psyche and it's projection in art. Ulver creates art, about something which creates art. Of course anxiety, pain, mental sickness, emotions and darkness are strong parts of creative drive. I think Ulver digs deep in the process of creation. Creating a character, a mental state or a piece of art, whatever you want it to be... This is not simply musicianship. This is alchemy in many ways. Not that I believe in alchemy or mysticism. But if alchemy exists, it's here.

IAN JOHNSTONE DIES AGE 47 Artist, beekeeper and Coil affiliate Ian Johnstone died at his home in Spain on 30 June. He was 47 years old. His death was caused by a recurring bronchial infection that had previously seen him hospitalised. Johnstone was the former partner of the late John Balance and regularly collaborated with Coil, having made numerous costumes for the group as well as the artwork for Coil albums including Black Antlers and the Racing Green box edition of The Ape Of Naples. Born in Cumbria, UK, on 2 September 1967, Johnstone studied fine art at Middlesex University where he developed his Mr Todd alias - a performance character that would appear throughout his career. Johnstone also collaborated with Dan O’Sullivan, participating in his Mothlite and Ulver projects. In the latterJohnstone performed Mr Todd’s levitation piece and The Leg Cutter at the Norwegian National Opera house. Talking of Johnstone, O’Sullivan says: “He was a master craftsman, discerning to the finest detail, humble and kind, self-critical and irreverent, in love with nature, at war with the capitalist patriarchy. A good animal, true to his animal instincts.” In the last few years Johnstone spent his time in the Asturian mountains working on Cantu Fermusu, an agroforestry, farming and gardening project with Mikel Quirós.

I love this piece of music, though I do not fully understand what's the meaning behind it? I'm confused as to what the man is trying to express...
