Hey everybody,
the never-ending question "Should I cover a song I love?" is a tough one... There is the risk to butcher it, the risk to anger the original creators and/or their fans and the fear of potentially attracting undeserved attention (positive or negative) for something somebody else has lovingly created...
So before you even listen to this make sure to click here: • Songleikr | Ulvetime (... and watch the original and if you love it, give it a like, a share, a comment and a subscription for the channel and then go to Bandcamp and download the original there: songleikr.band... and everything else you potentially like by this lovely little collective of musicians who also happen to be core-members of the band Heilung.
I recorded this cover version as a sign of appreciation of their beautiful work and because I wanted to know what it sounds like with a harp and my voice, despite not speaking any Norwegian at all (a big SORRY to everybody who does speak the language - I did my best trying to phonetically learn the song, but I may have butchered the lyrics quite a bit...I'm sorry, I am German by birth and I am living in England...). And it was just a pleasure to explore this haunting track and to listen to all its details and nuances and skill of musicianship and production - both things I lack myself, being at best a hobbyist to semi-professional recording in a tiny bedroom in an tiny flat with the minimum of equipment and skill one needs to create anything at all, I guess... A big thanks to Songleikr for creating this song (please show them some love!), which I love dearly. I hope my little version does not butcher it too badly...
Lots of love,
Syl/Valdkynd

Lovely rendition of a beautiful song. I can relate to the uncertainty of doing justice to doing a cover of a song you love. But then again your love for this song does sound and shine through and that gives it a special value. Very well done. ✳👌

Hi Valkynd... very very nice work on that cover...i also love that song and been really surprised to hear it with a different instrument, but your voice with additional chorus, is awesome and the harmony combination with that harp sounds stunning beautiful !! Congratulations !! (attempted my own cover with guitar and voice, last year but didn't reach such a good result, so i ceased to release it... just can t stop playing the main riff on guitar very often... and lyrics are so wise and full of meaning, big thanks to Songleikr also !)

Thank you so much! I would love to listen to your cover once you are happy enough to release it. It's surprising how tricky this piece is despite its simplicity. Took me a lot more thought than it may appear here. I think I recorded 3 voice layers and first was using them in equal loudness, only to later decide to mix the top and lower voice into the background to just gently support the lead. I wonder if it just sounds like an effect now though. Was also surprisingly hard to keep the harp in a consistent timing with this relentlessly repeating pattern I chose, may have been equally hard to keep it steady on the tagelharpa and the mandolin, when Songleikr recorded it, but I guess they are true pros.
