Rockstar had that idea for GTA 4 but they couldn't do it at the time GTA 5 released in 2013 and was in development for 5 years and Vavra didn't even finish mafia 2 so how could he have a script for mafia 3 and if it was so good how that they didn't like it i think he is full of shit on that one like he said he failed 5 projects before doing KCD at GDC

Rockstar had this idea since San Andreas, but they couldn't execute it due to technical limitations. And in GTA IV the story of the 3 Liberty City protagonists intertwined.

I really wish for an alternate history where we got Mafia 2 and Mafia 3 untainted by corporate bullshit. I bought mafia 2 on the first day it was released in my country, I really wanted to love it but it was so clear that it was half a game. Please keep making these. There's no reason to mix politics. I'm solidly in the left wing and I would disagree with Dan's politics completely. HOWEVER, I will always respect him as a genius in the game-making world and none of his politics will ever change that fact. @@neuzdost1939 I wouldn't call it a trash, the soundtrack is great and cutscenes look amazing, the rest isn't "the best", but it's not a 0/10 it's just average 5/10 mabe 4/10 if you're a long time fan, but yeah after Mafia 1 and 2 Mafia 3 was a BIG letdown. I gave it a chance again when the definitive edition came out and it still isn't impressive, but it isn't a "complete trash".

Vavra used to talk at length about miserable experiences he had pitching various projects to publishers before going independent. I can't recall exact source, though. Might have been one of the entries of the original WS blog from 2011-2012.

Not to mention; in 2003/2004. they started the script for mafia 2 & that time. they wanted to have the m2 to be developed for the ps2 (hence the tech-demo) they showed on youtube. now that didn't work due to renderware being in EA's hands. so they built the illusion engine (similar to what m3 is) & by 2006. they wanted to feature dlc on the game. so thats why joes adventures / jimmy's bullshit has all those missions all over the map. None of the games ending was supposed to be how it is. -- info: even dan. the mafia 1's original writer said, that mafia 2's ending wasn't originally how it was. & Henry never was set to die & Falcone set them up. Vito was gonna be left to rot in prison, or joe dies. etc

@John Williamson fax i think everyone thinks its really good because of great cutscenes, serious social themes and tone, and time period. but if you look beyond face value, the story is an incredibly predictable generic Hollywood revenge story (not helped by the fact they spoiled a lot in trailers) and is a punisher knock off with some social justice themes shoehorned in to make the game virtue signal. Not to mention its quite clear the devs at the time had their own idea for a game but needed to make it work in the Mafia universe which is why we have Vito shoehorned in as a former shell of himself. Vito is not Hangar 13's character and i would had loved to see what the true canon 2k czech team and Vavra who created Vito would had done with Vito and Joe's story then H13 who kinda butchered it and didn't give a satisfying ending for them. Edit: with Haden Blackman leaving Hangar 13 I have slightly more hope for Mafia IV. I was not a fan of his direction with the games and it was clear he wanted to make something else and hopefully he can now focus on those projects. I think he was much better at making star wars games (the force unleashed) and with EA’s star wars exclusive license finished he can go back to making them.

Dont get me wrong - i know that your concept was greatly changed since Mafia 2, and i feel your frustration about remake's Paulie and how it works for whole story in game, but share some ideas with Leslie - his onto something and its may be very fruitful talk with him.

The same goes for Mafia 2. There was a lot of cut content from Mafia 1 (which was just another sign of the ambition of the game), but it ended up being a coherent game and story. We also know there was a lot of cut things from Mafia 2, but when you end the story it doesn't feel like an ending. You don't know what its story was about. Was it about family? Was it about friendship? Was it about ambition? Not one of those themes is completely developed. Nor there is a coherent argumental plot. Why do you think Vavra left 2K after Mafia II and made his own company and game (KC:D)?

Are you all blind or what? From my point off view is clear what happened. Illusion Softworks was promising young studio. With almost no money (vs Rockstar's GTA) they made games beloved by fans. 2K seen possible future competitor and rather than wait who is going to buy them they done it by themselves. After that they kept them under control away from crossing gta plans. GTA was at the time already their cashcow. If you own two similar brands one must step-away to don't weaken bigger one. Probably they seen mafia developers have similar ideas like guys from Rockstar, so they changed mafia script here and there to give their main team more time until they were able to deliver their "original" ideas.

I'm not a huge fan of Vavra as a person (He seems very full of himself, which is off-putting), but he did create some great games such as Mafia and Kingdom Come (As well as Mafia 2 to some extent). Keep on doing that, Mr. Vavra, but please don't forget about people who play these games for the story, not for the challenge ;)

I'm glad they didn't use the script. After the shitshow that was KCD, I'm starting to think that his one trick pony, Mafia 1, made him think he's better than he actually is as a writer and designer. I'm glad he didn't get to turn Mafia 2 into the crappy game he wanted it to be as well.
